Been meaning to paint this for ages as an homage to @avelera’s amazing fic ‘Giving Santuary’.

That fic has stayed with me since it first came out. Just amazing writing.

Ever since I saw the original painting by Leighton, my brain went: That’s them! … Sitting in the garden. Dream helping Hob practicing his letters 🥹.

Also, my HC that during the Toast dream, Hob perceived Dream was in danger, and his subconscious couldn’t help but to ‘come to his defense’, and morphed out of his Elizabethan ruffle for the good old medieval chainmail & sword.

This was just gonna be a quick sketch for another thing I’m making, but his angy birb features have captured me, body an soul.

Some thoughts about the process:

I just wanted to give him big hair and put him in a blouse.

The concept is a reinterpretation of a painting by Koloman Moser (1899), (w a touch of Mucha on the wig design).

When I first saw that Moser painting, it immediately made me think of Dream’s reflections in ‘Exiles’ and I couldn’t get it out of my head.

Also, I’m just filled with dread at the prospect of watching TKO and TW next week, and drawing pretty twinks is my main coping mechanism.

The Sandman - Brief Lives

Digital painting and photo manipulation.

Some thoughts about the process:

This one was a bit tough. I drew the hands and Portrait by hand, but the poppies I took from existing watercolors I found on Pinterest from artist Karin Johannesson. Then I used photo manipulation brushes to create the water like effect, and deformed the perspective. I don’t usually use existing works directly on my drawings, so I’m a bit nervous about posting this. I tried painting my own poppies, but my watercolor skills are laughable and evidence of Johannesson’s talent. For what is worth, I have no intention of selling this. This is just a coping mechanism for the emotional damage The Sandman has given me.
