how it all feels lately
Me, hoping that physical pain can absolve me from this ugly apathy I've been succumbing to for the last year, make my father, who always measured the person's virtue by the sufferings they've endured, respect me (even though he's not here to see me), and restore in me the religious fear of eternal punishment so I could sincerely share the beliefs of my family: yeah, let's treat this tooth without anesthesia
Which variant of D-class uniform do you prefer?
Without that silly little hat (whose Russian name contains a slur)

Very important question, examples below (arts by @wildragon and ximenart15)

Imagining a BloodyMary scenario where Grace is in really bad shape from the after-effects of malnutrition when the Eridians happen to find Simon. Simon is in bad shape too, but his physical injuries, his arm, etc, the Eridians fix him up pretty quickly. But Grace is unconscious. Dying, even, unless something is done. Something only Simon can help with. Imagine Rocky slowly approaching Simon with Grace’s translation laptop and asking, begging, Simon to help Grace. Grace’s kidneys are failing and he needs a new one. But the translation isn’t completely clear. Simon doesn’t understand that such a donation isn’t a death sentence. That Simon agrees, thinking it is, that after all he has done and been through, he can do this one good thing and save a life, make his life worth something. Save the life of the man that supposedly saved the stars Simon thought were already gone. The surgery happens. Simon wakes up. Then Grace wakes up, to not only the surprise of another human, but the human that saved his life.
What seemed to be tragic story from one perspective, could be funny as hell from another if it turned out that someone else came to Simon with this plea... Rocky: so the surgery was successful. Relief relief relief! I need to tell the new human once again how grateful our people are for his sacrifice. It was obvious that Simon was under a lot of stress. No need to stress! Simon is in hands of professionals! Our scientists will do everything possible to ensure that the donation does not affect his health and life expectancy. But still... Was it difficult for you to persuade him? What did you tell him? The Eridian Fisting Welcoming Committee:
BloodyMary au where everything is the same as in common fanon, but Simon lost his dominant hand and now has quite a hard time while retraining himself.
Rocky: need understand. So humans have four limbs, not five.
Grace: you see.
Rocky: but two useful for walking only, so you have just two to work and hold things.
Grace: yeah.
Rocky: and now you tell me only one can write and do precise movements and literally anything, question?! [pointing at Simon who struggles to eat ramen with chopsticks] What humans do in wild when lose it, just lie down and die, statement?
Grace: no!
Simon: yes.
P.S.: possible addition for the "Hail Mary crew survives" au.
Iluykhina: oh! Actually, it's hard but not impossible to retrain yourself to use one hand instead of another! It was even a common practice in some places. The number of people with a dominant left hand is much lower than those with a dominant right hand. So few decades ago, in my country, teachers forced left-handed children to use their right hand for writing, punishing them otherwise, until they got into the habit.
Rocky, oblivious: humankind strange.
Grace, the truly caring teacher: excuse me w h a t
(That's a real story that happened with my mom :( I read that this practice was common in the USA too, but don't know when it ceased)
Project Hail Mary has taken hold of me
Hi @sharkfiinn
While Grace is teaching the Eridians, he mentions how important socialization and pack bonding is for humans. Humans require a community to thrive and get depressed if they're left alone, so it's best to keep them in groups. However humans can pack bond with anything, and Grace is very close to the Eridians, so he's okay.
The Eridians misunderstand him, and proceed to panic because they only have one human. They only have one human but it turns out you need to keep them in packs. They can die if they're isolated for to long and they can't let Grace die this is bad bad bad.
So they send a message to earth, asking if anybody would be willing to volunteer to live on Erid with Grace. They stress that while this is a life or death matter, they need the human to be a willing participant. That all of their needs and wants would be met and that the Eridians would give Earth information and technology in exchange. The volunteer would be given a life of luxury in exchange for living on Erid with Grace.
Unfortunately, there is a mistranslation, and the humans think that the Eridians require a sacrifice otherwise they will use their resources against earth. In order to avoid a possible interstellar war with an alien species, they choose a convict who has a life sentence to be locked in a bare rocket and blasted off to Erid.
That is how Simon, the only survivor of his religious extremist cult, ended up on the SM-13 headed to an alien planet against his will.
Okay, I reread this post once, and I reread this post twice, and again and again. This premise can fit so much angst and trauma reinforcement for all characters included, but it's incredibly funny at the same time!
Science team: according to our data, the sun is actively losing its brightness; this surely will lead to temperature drop, and afterwards, to provision shortage, fuel and fertilizer depletion, ecological catastrophe, and inevitable extinction of humankind.
Eva Stratt: ...I'm willing to sacrifice any amount of people to save humankind.
Ryland Grace: oh I dunno, it sounds a bit morally ambiguous- HOLD ON WHERE ARE YOU DRAGGING ME TO?!
[decades after]
Science team: according to the message we have just received, Dr. Grace can still be alive after his suicidal detour to Eridani 40, but Eridian specimens seem to be using him to dictate terms, with Grace being held hostage, and who knows what else they can do and what a danger to humankind...
Eva Stratt [deeply elderly but still firmly in the saddle]: ...Fuck humankind. I'm willing to sacrifice any amount of people to save Dr. Grace. At least this time.
Simon the Convict: oh I dunno, it sounds a bit morally ambiguous- HOLD ON WHERE ARE YOU DRAGGING ME TO?!
OP I BEG YOU to make a name and a tag for this AU! With all these people typing "fanfic where, question" and "fanfic will be there, statement", I feel like a lot would like to contribute! ⁽⁽◝( •௰• )◜⁾⁾
A view of Erid as a more progressive, almost-utopian society which overcame inequality and armed conflicts always fills my heart with warmth, but. What if it isn't.
Rocky: ...Rocky hate Stratt. Rocky hate Earth, statement.
Grace: oh! ಥ╭╮ಥ I- I appreciate that you're trying to reassure me, honestly, but... But all these things are unfair to say about them... and about her. I know Stratt was willing to take my place for the sake of life on Earth! But she must stay at her post, fulfill her role, and I- with my knowledge- [kaomoji of even more ugly crying] She just couldn't!
Rocky: ˚♪ 𝄞₊˚⊹♫'s minister of war say this shit every day. Rocky is not impressed, statement.
Me: oh wow! Didn't know that a movie I watched recently has a fanbase so huge and talented in every possible way! Should look for Tumblr posts, too.
Me, two hours later: WHO THE FUCK IS MARKIPLIER
Right now I know nothing more about "Iron Lung" than the shortest summary from Wikipedia + a bazillion headcanon posts that you, dear creators of these AUs, have written. But I'm quite fond of the idea that Simon the Convict, sent to die for some terrible crimes he committed, looked into the eyes of Grace the Scientist and Grace the Teacher, who did nothing to deserve death but was sent to die anyway. And both of them silently realize that when people in power need you to give your life away, they will always find a reason to blame you, and you will never be allowed even to try and utter an excuse.
I know it's probably inaccurate to the plots of both movies, but it's just such an important theme for me. Because right now I'm in another fandom (SCP) which explores theme of killing few thousand to save others quite extensively.
I know that "Backrooms" is not a part of "SCP Foundation", and I know that no one in English fandom has watched an old Russian sitcom where these characters are from (didn't watch it too, though). But I see orange overalls — I see D-class personnel, and I can't imagine how English fandom can do without this meme.
1) Be the SCP Foundation, an organisation that works with inexplicable and dangerous anomalies,
2) Recruit uneducated, marginalized and vulnerable people for possibly lethal experiments and work,
3) Treat them so badly that they hate you within a week,
4) Give them a job that requires more than zero responsibility,
5) Profit! Enjoy results like this.
(Not my idea! I've just translated)
Why do D-class personnel wear orange jumpsuits? Obviously, because in American prisons, inmates wear orange uniforms. But I didn’t know this for a long time, because in Russia the color of prison uniforms is different (and for some reason, it hasn’t created such a recognizable image here). I knew that D-class personnel are recruited from criminals, but I never connected their clothing to what they had done. Instead, I just saw it as an element of the Foundation’s internal rules.
But! That said, in Russia, orange (or mostly orange) clothing is still used for a number of working professions: road repair, construction, cleaning, and so on. Unconsciously, I associated the D-class uniform with people doing hard physical, "low-status," low-paid work. And low pay is traditionally justified by the idea that anyone can learn the job, and the worker is easily replaceable — except that without this "primitive" labor, the entire system built on it would collapse, no matter how complex or pretentious it might be.
It seems like a small thing, but I guess it also influenced why I sympathize with these characters, against all logic.
I have a headcanon that D-class personnel call each other by their names, not by their numbers, in everyday life, because why would they suddenly stop doing that? What, sir scientist, you need to dehumanize us and simplify accounting? Not me nor my homies give a fuck; my cell, my rules. And well, higher staff also don't care what the disposables do for fun with each other. However! Numbers are also in use among the D-boys — as an insult, one that is not acceptable to throw around. In fact, it's a short and succinct way to say, "you're not a human being, unlike me; you know how they treat us, and you deserve every bit of it, personally". Sometimes you can still stay friends after that, but it's still an equivalent of a challenge to a duel, and if you use it lightly, you'll lose respect among all your cellmates, not only the one you insulted.
So what's all this about?..
(Richard and his partner, one of the newbies, exit SCP-173’s chamber) (Richard aggressively grabs the newbie by the collar) Richard: What the hell was that, huh? Newbie: Come on, don’t jump on me like that, it all turned out fine, didn’t it… Richard: Sure as hell didn’t turn out fine because of you! I told you three times — the post has been relieved! Newbie: I dunno how you do it, it's just scary as hell, Jesus… Richard: So it wouldn’t be so scary if both of us got killed in there? I’m standing here, squinting like a tourist on a sunny beach, and where’s D-1020? D-1020 is standing there polishing his mop like it owes him money, thinking “why bother changing shifts, let Rich do all the work for both of us” — is that it?! Newbie (sniffling, offended): My name is Steven! Richard: Well, the moment you stop screwing up on the job — you’ll be Steven! And if this happens again, you’re gonna be walking around with fractions, got it?! D-ten-twenty-point-fuck-tenths, how’s that? And I’ll slap an integral on top of that too, so you’ll learn… Steven: I’m not- listen- how can I- you don’t really know what an integral is, do you? Richard: Richard: yeah sO WHAT?!
Imagine, SCP-049 hasn't figured how the Foundation works yet
The Plague Doctor: In the place and epoch where I was born, there was a honorable but funny custom: naming children by seniority. My family also adhered to it. The first child was a son — a good sign! And they gave him the name Primo. I came into the world the fifth, and… The Plague Doctor: well, I'm probably getting tiresome. But what is your name, captive? D-boy (with a face like chewing a very nasty lemon): D-3881 The Plague Doctor: The Plague Doctor: wow
Sorry to admit that, but I've lost the battle with my new obsession. Surprising, BUT it turned oud that not every fan of some fandom chooses the most pathetic, most dirty and most despised character to cherish, adore and make art about them! So right now I watch youtube shorts with SCP:SL memes (I'm not even going to play it) with most vulgar humor about swearing, weed and dropping a soap, because at least there I can look at D class who have some life in the eyes and any other routine than suffering. Not to say I mind, though.
(Translation: be kinder)
A Moment in the Warehouse* excerpt from a my fanfic
🇬🇧/🇺🇸_______ (The D-class character is a woman! No need to write that it's a guy.)
Soon the security officer found a small warehouse and decided to stop there. Having opened and closed the door with a second-level access key card, he left Doshi inside the warehouse near the door, and began to examine the shelves for useful things. D-shka, in turn, did not simply wait by the wall and decided to walk around the warehouse perimeter, to look out of curiosity at what was on the shelves.
The girl with her hands cuffed behind her back decided to go up to the shelves and see what was there.
- W...What are you doing? - He narrowed his eyes.- Why the hell are you following me? - the guard asked with suspicion and contempt.
-I'm checking out the supplies. What, I can't? - She looked at him and raised an eyebrow questioningly.
- Look, I already hate my job, why are you making it harder for me? If you try to steal ANYTHING from here, I'll punch you in the face!
- That's exactly what I was thinking, - she replied sarcastically, rolling her eyes. - I could carry out the whole warehouse in handcuffs!

🇬🇧/🇺🇲 I really like the way you draw :b You manage to make characters turn so unpolished, unsmoothed, and on both faces you can see a certain trace of sleeplessness, fatigue, filthiness — all that without which work for the Foundation is impossible, even in the highest positions. Even in arts where the characters are happy, they look a little exhausted, but this makes their joy seem hard-won, and therefore more sincere and valuable. The girl, for me personally, looks a little like Dunno by N. Nosov (◕ᴗ◕✿) You just look at the characters and think, aww, what a klutzes, and wrecks, and maybe a bit victims of tuberculosis, but all this is solely as a compliment. In general, the drawings are great for showing "little people" whom you want to empathize with, and empathizing with "little people", especially Dees, is the only reason I started looking at posts on the fandom tag in the first place ":D
I haven't read the fic, I can't really say anything about it. But as far as I understand, you translate it into English with Google/Yandex, and it sometimes misfires. :/ I don't think the English speakers will understand the abbreviation "D-shka", because there is no suffix "shka" in their language. At first, I didn't know what to suggest instead, but then I consulted Deepseek, and it turned out that English-speaking fandom has a whole bunch of its own abbreviations: D-boy/D-boi/D-girl (kind of affectionate and pejorative at the same time, so it can be used by other classes' personnel, and the Dees themselves), D-bag (an insult, a play on words with douchebag), Dee (most neutrally, just the letter is written as a full name). You decide!
And there is a swear word in Doshi's last phrase in Russian, but not in English. Why not add it? :) As far as I know, you won't get banned for this here. (If you wish, I can share with you a link to a guide about how to swear in English. Useful if you're writing a long fic about former criminals. But I warn you, there are also very harsh expressions :b)
Sorry for nitpicking over such nonsense: I love watching how English-speaking fandom acquires a Russian flavor and a view of the world through us — and then comparing it with the source and seeing that we have more in common than it seemed. I would like Russian authors to be noticed more often on foreign platforms, and readers to easily understand the original idea.
It didn't fit in the comments, so I had to repost, I hope you will read it :b
