Late night sketch
I've been drawing things.
Recent doodles by me, David Huyck
Doing some character designing on a new story idea.
The writing is — I’m free from pain. It’s the place where I live; it’s where I have control; it’s where nobody tells me what to do; it’s where my imagination is fecund and I am really at my best. Nothing matters more in the world or in my body or anywhere when I’m writing.

I read or heard something about how being in "the zone" like this is likely to be your brain's synapses overloading. It shuts out the inessentials to allow your efforts to continue, and in the process you lose your sense of time and the present physical space - instead transferring your entire mental state to the work at hand.
This is something I experience regularly when I draw. The first time it happened when I was writing, however, it was shocking, and I had to sit and recover for some time. It was shocking, but also incredible, and I love finding my way into that space whenever I can.
I was having trouble drawing this guy, so I thought I should look at his bones. #xrayvision #monsters

A couple recent reject sketches.
Playing with paper
I’m homing in on the look for a book I want to make.
I’m hard at work on things that won’t come out until next year. But in the meantime, here’s one of my favorite monster GIFs that I made a couple years ago. Happy October!
That time of year again
I drew another piggie. (at Northfield, Minnesota)
Come on out of that shell!
I’m trying to fully imagine a world I’m creating, and this is the handmade doll of a character I’m developing. It’s based on this quick prototype I made out of real cloth and paint.
A short sketch, inspired by these, though mine is a bit more somber, due to the gray weather out my window.

The making of some endpapers. For a book coming out in spring, 2016!
