Most people have spent the night in a tent at one time or another and have benefited from fabric protection or use of architectural textiles while enjoying the feeling of being separated from nature by nothing more than a thin layer. Architectural textiles have a long history dating back to the Palaeolithic era and represent an architectural design that continues to exist today. The textiles are lightweight, easy to rebuild or disassemble and provide protection against wind, ultraviolet rays and rain.

In this article and those that will follow in our series on 'The Fabric of Building: Engineered Architectural Fabrics we will be describing textile structures used in a wide range of architectural textile applications and highlighting the diversity of fabrics employed in architecture.
Whether the innovative use of industrial networks as in the last example or the use of special architectural textiles, the potential to use materials in construction planning is far from exhausted, as many high-tech textiles used in industry are not yet available for construction applications. At the same time, construction with textiles and, above all, the use of membranes is increasingly important in architecture and is increasingly used in large-scale projects, which will be addressed in the next article in our series “Textile Architecture”.
