He was in the middle of the florest, his car parked, and the environment was lit only by the headlight. He was sitting outside, turning his ring on his fingers while Frank Sinatra’s voice echoed ‘some day, when i’m awfully low, when the world is cold; i will feel a glow just thinking of you and the way you look tonight. yes, you’re lovely, with your smile so warm and your cheeks so soft; there is nothing for me but to love you and the way you look tonight’
Balthazar could hear small noises that clashed with the melody, stood and lowered the sound, paying more attention now. The noise did not seem to be very far away and he decided to check it out, taking his baseball bat from the trunk of the car and taking the direction of the sound. Approaching the place, he was able to see a fire, and around it were a group of six vampires feeding on three human bodies that were lying on the ground. From the brutality of the attacks he imagined that they would be new borns and appeared to be hungry.
He approached slowly, placing his bat and hitting one of the vampires from behind, tearing off his head. Only then did the others notice his presence, moving away from the bodies and attacking him. New borns weren’t easy to fight, they were like a powerful mix of vampires and humans, the last time he had done that was a long time ago. He dodged the attacks quickly, using his bat to defend himself. He jumped over one, holding it by the head and giving a backward flip, causing the new born body to hit sharply against the ground, while his head hung in Balthazar’s hands. Two. He picked up a bottle with a drink that was on the floor, and threw it on the fire, making it explode and two new borns catch on fire. Four. He was grabbed by two others, he held the face of one to prevent it from biting him, while kicking the other away, he quickly turned around and grabbed the vampire from behind, hanging him with his bat until his head came off his body. . Five. Where would the last one be? He looked around, looking for any sign of movement “Hide and seek, found by me” he said, walking around until by the light of the fire he could see a shadow that was hiding among the trees. He ran quickly and grabbed the last vampire, leaning him against the tree while giving several bites on his neck, tearing off a piece of it, dropping the lifeless body on the ground. He took a piece of wood and let it catch on fire, burning the bodies of the vampires on the floor.
He cleaned his bat using his shirt, as he saw someone approaching him slowly “sorry for the mess, wasn’t expecting guests” he said sarcastically referring to the bodies that caught fire on the ground
Milena had been out hunting, tracking what she assumed were a bunch of vampires -- perhaps a pack of their own. Surely they weren’t part of the so called Windhams she’d heard so much about during her time in Cresthill. Mostly whispers, that weren’t of any use to her. It’s almost like this town knew she was specifically a vampire hunter and they tried to keep the existence of vampires a secret from her. However, she’d caught a break as she’d heard screams emitting through the wooded forest and had sprinted towards their direction.
She reached a nearby car, perhaps an abandoned vehicle, perhaps something that belonged to one of the screamers. Ducking down on the driver’s side, Mila reached into her satchel to make sure she had everything she needed. Stake, check. Matches, check. Holy water, check. Patience, check. Once she was secure, she stood up and began tracking the screamers to a clearing with a bristling fire.
Unfortunately, the hunt was over. Instead there stood a man who’d seemed to already have taken care of the vile creatures. “You killed them?” Her eyes drifted to the fire. “They were vampires, right?” He must have been another hunter. “I’m jealous you didn’t leave one for me.”
