Born during Spring, Heol-Ah was the youngest of five sisters. She grew up accustomed to the cameras and microphones shoved in her face; not that she minded at all, considering most of the news were on the sisters’ beauty. Everyone knew who she was from the moment she was born. Everyone knew who the Hwang family was. Everyone who owned any electronics of any kind knew who they were. They were an empire.
Growing up with the Hwang name, however, was not as breezy as one would have thought. Going to school was a nightmare because no one would sit next to her in fear of appearing on the news. Parents would actively keep their children away from her, requesting for transfers out of classes she was in because no one needed a scandal with a Hwang. High school only took a turn for the worse when all the two-faced attention seekers came to ride on the Hwang name. Over time, Heol-Ah learnt to accept her fate. And how to use the Hwang name to her advantage.
Her sisters made a name for themselves, one way or another. Heol-Ah wanted to as well. When she joined Instagram, she suddenly became the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for companies. Gaining more than a million followers in a day or so, she had companies on their knees begging for her to promote their products and brands. They were getting their money worth tenfold after all. She was Hwang Heol-Ah.
She grew tired of it, staying relevant in the media just for the money’s sake. She was tired of the antis, coming after her because of who she was. She was tired of the images she had to create in order to fit in to the criteria the companies looked for. She was so tired, until an angel came to her rescue.
An anonymous. A nobody. It was just a comment that Heol-Ah would have ignored usually but she did not. You should try gaming. Four simple words that Heol-Ah was still thankful for to this day. She escaped into the world of gaming, hiding behind a username and making new friends. Friends who genuinely liked her because of who she was, not because of a name she could not get rid of. Nobody cared who you were in the gaming world, they only cared for your skills. And Heol-Ah was good. So good that when streaming became a thing, her account was consistently in the top ten most subscribed and viewed. A streamer who refused to show their face or even use voice chat, however, they were bound to fade eventually.
However, life was cruel and one could never live their life entirely in happiness. Every great empire must fall, and the Hwang empire fell the second Hwang Yongseung passed away without appointing an heir. They crumbled like a cookie dropped from a building. Feuds sparked everywhere, illegitimate sons started popping up, and suddenly the Hwangs were headline news for different reasons. Life had always been hard with the Hwang name stuck to her, but it only became harder after her grandfather’s death.
Life was not made any easier after her sister’s exposed involvement in an affair. Heol-Ah had to get away from her family and the cameras. She came to Hwaryung to start anew, to enjoy a vacation without the family drama going on around her. She ended up staying longer than intended; there was just something about being far from all the drama that made her feel at peace.

Where does your story begin? Along the coast of azure, where the summer climate brings the golden sun kissing upon ivory skin and the beryl water embracing the sweet-tempered child. In a house nothing shy of resplendent your parents and the servants often call you their princess while your footsteps imprint themselves onto the floors and your hand makes it mark along the walls and the furniture. Under their praise you procure epicurean fantasies. You are effulgent, you scintillate. But you are also a fool, so self-absorbed unable to see how spoiled you are. Every wish granted, every interest offered a short-lived flame of chance even if your mind will toss things aside a few days later. The moments of opportunity are often lost on you while you imagine yourself a member of royalty. Rich enough, certainly enchanting enough, but not powerful enough.
Your dreams are first shattered when you enter grade school. A private school, suddenly there are many children just like you and you realize the star you so strongly coveted was not who you were. You were one of many. Not someone who should’ve thought about a tiara unless it was one to be made of fool’s gold. So you change your dream, molding the white cloud into something new. Something even more intangible but you were never a person who could be bound by reality.
A mermaid. Beautiful, enchanting mystical beings of the water. Not the little mermaid though, you would never let love be the thing which casts you to your death. No, you are simply thinking of all those days where you would let your feet splash against the waters or when you dive beneath the wave to a whole new world. How in those moments you wish you could be down there forever, connecting with the creatures that make the stunning place their home. You are driven by this idea as you move forward, obsessing over books about marine animals and finding chances to visit the tours in the aquarium.
At the end of middle school your parents decide that for you to grow, for you to ground yourself from those airy dreams, you need to head somewhere even more prestigious so you can take a bigger step into the socialite world. You are sent away from home to a private boarding school outside of South Korea. Brought to Manhattan, for a few years you forget about the dream you once had. You lose yourself in the world of the upper-class, indulging in lavish parties and the entire idea of feasting on what you want. Who you want. You send pictures home, carefully selected ones for your parents and the ones which carry more secrets to those you trust.
Columbia University extends a hand towards you. You take it. Your friends speak of politics, they speak of business, they speak of law and medicine and they speak of towering above the poor because in their eyes it’s their right. A gold spoon. You think about it. Think about everything you’ve been through, the good and the bad. The people around you. You think of the dream you had that you wouldn’t allow anyone to break, of a girl with a fishtail instead of two legs. Of a girl who lost herself in the waves of the ocean, preferring it to her home.
Environmental biology. It comes unexpectedly, seemingly out of nowhere. Your friends don’t inquire since you still end up meeting them between breaks and heading to their parties but there’s a lingering question in the air as to why you chose to segregate yourself. You don’t explain it since nobody asks. Instead you use the major and your good marks to score more travels all around the world for research. You can afford it so you keep on grabbing all that you can.
With undergraduate under your belt, a trust fund and some research funds too in the form of your Master’s thesis, you decide it’s finally time to make your way home back to Hwaryung. The coast is rich, you knew that since you were young and it’ll welcome you between the good and the bad. It has to.
