Jackie would argue that she was a bit different than the other ‘children of the Commandos’ as he called them. She had been 22 when she met Dino – a hero in her own right along with her brother, Brian. She had spent many a mission partnering with her father’s new friends and getting to know the Barnes twins (the two Brooklyners that her father had turned around and adopted as his other children). So she supposed she counted in the same way that Bex did – the Commandos having long since referred to the female Barnes as ‘their little girl’.

Either way, her Dad was going to kill Dino when he found out. 

“Awww…I love when MI-6′s need of Mel politely coincides with our need to occupy the same space. I’ll make dinner reservations. Meet you at my flat around 7:30?”

Okay, it was a bit different, but it wouldn’t matter to Jack in the long run. They had all been together long enough that they were a strange family. Though in the past few decades, Dino had gone straight (so to speak). He wasn’t the same man he had been been during the war (or after). So that had to count for something, right?

“I do enjoy being taken care of by the like of the Starks. They have the best champagne.” He laughed and sank down on the edge of his bed, looking at his watch. “7:30 should work. I’ll send you a message once we touch down.”

“You should know by now I miss all of you when you’re not here.” Or she wasn’t there. Whenever ‘the pond’ separated her from the others – her father, the Rogers, the Commandos…the little family they’d made for themselves over the years. But Dino…Dino was something different. Something that, if discovered, would drive her father absolutely bonkers.

They’d tell him. One day.

“But there are…some…I miss more than others. Tell me you’ll be here by tonight…I have conference calls til 4 and then a quick debrief at the MI-13 building, but I could definitely do a late dinner…”

The thing between Dino and Jackie was, to put it mildly, complicated. To the children of the Commandos, Dino had always been Uncle Dino. He had watched them grow up while he remained the same. Dino didn’t really know when things between them shifted. When he started to look at each other differently. The flirting had been innocent at first but it had crossed a line that Dino didn’t want to go back from. 

He smiled, shifting the phone to his other ear. “Well, sweetheart, I was going to surprise you, but...” He let her hang for a moment as he tossed his travel kit into the carry on. “Mrs. Stark’s taking a trip over there so they’re letting me hitch a ride on the private jet. Happy’s picking me up in two hours.”

Dino’s fork paused over his plate, eyebrows arching across the table at Bex. “You know, there’s more in the pot in the kitchen. You don’t have to steal mine.” Dino knew well enough that he had to make extra when others were over for dinner.

Dino tucked the phone between his ear and his shoulder, freeing up his hands to work on packing his carry on. Despite the fact that he was known to be high maintenance, he did know how to pack light when he had to. “You miss me that much, princess?”
