Born in early 1914, no part of life had ever been considered "easy" for one Daniel Rosen. Born out of an affair of a man with no name and a woman of the night, his only form of identity came from a small locket with his surname enscribed on it bestowed upon him at birth. That would be the only time he'd see his father until the day he would die.
Growing up as a young man through the late 1910s and into the 20s, Daniel had hardly a life of notice. He was silent, a reflection of his mother's teachings and the strong hand of whoiever happened to watch him that evening. His days were spent wandering, quite literally watching the world pass innocent eyes by as if he wasn't real. That would all change with one key moment. An oddly dressed man had approached his mother with an offer, one that would benefit everyone involved in her eyes: Allow her son to have a better life away from her morally askew business with a payday attached. As he was pulled away from his mother, Daniel was treated as a person for the first time in his life by a man known for his cruelty. A man by the name of Romeo Miceli, a second generation Italian immigrant with a stronghold on his burrough of a growing New York, hadn't been able to have a son of his own. Embarassed, he chose to cover this up by adopting the poor boy and bring Daniel up as if he was his heir. He thrived with the Miceli family, finding that through the blood and violence they executed, they were exactly what they claimed to be.
A family.
As he grew older, Daniel fell into the same lifestyle that his 'family' fancied itself in. Running booze and guns, preying on the weak for financial gain, and killing the night with his choice of drugs. Still, there was a voice in the back of his head questioning his every move, pulling him in the direction of peace. The closer he danced with death, the louder that voice pleaded for him to break away from his life before he was snuffed out. It would be that same voice that walked him right into a trap laid out by his own family, an execution in the streets that dropped him right back on the same corner his mother had turned tricks on years before. There, a whole 25 years later, Daniel Rosen passed as he was born -- As street filth.
As the light faded from his eyes, he caught a glimpse of a man with hair of hellfire and skin of brimstone, adorned in golden jewelry and a silk suit. His eyes were tired, his smile bittersweet as his hand rested on the young man's face, shutting his eyelids with a whisper:
"Sleep well, my son. Let your weary head rest now as you shed your mortal coil. Join me and take your birthright. Become who you were always meant to be."
The man took hold of that locket, that very locket he'd been left as a babe, and flicked it open. A red wisp left the inside, flowing into Daniel's slightly open mouth and filling his lungs.
"Enjoy your new life, my dear Basil."
Quite literally breathing a new life into him, Daniel shot up and gasped for air, wide eyes searching for that man he saw vague visions of. He was alone again, feeling the bullets he'd been riddled with push right out of his skin and fall into his lap. Whatever he had become, one thing was made quite clear: Daniel Rosen was long gone. There was only Basil. In the following decades, his role had been made more clear from the man who had brought him his second chance. His birth came from a romp the trickster God Hamartia and a human woman he found suited to carry his babe, pledging that he would only grant the child power once he'd passed on to give him a fair chance at life. Seeing as his son had spent his life reveling in sins, his powers were granted as the embodiment of the Seven Deadly Sins. His new life's purpose was to control and spread whatever sins he saw fit and punish those whse actions wronged an innocent. In a way, he became the protector he had wished for in his life.
While Daniel Rosen's name was still used for IDs and whatever cover he may need, Basil now lives as a free spirit, fully indulging in his new life.
