I would love for more Jekyll and Hyde adaptations to get into the boring minutiae of it. I'm sorry but I find the idea of a guy or girl making up a name and a family tree and so many documents and a life story and a personality and a wardrobe and everything for their larp oc so fucking funny and also it adds to the horror that they have gotten away with so much + they're letting this fantasy consume their reality until they're both blurred and eaten up
there's something eerie and disquieting to me about Jekyll claiming he knows Hyde intimately, like himself, or vice versa, and then getting a glimpse of all the work that Jekyll has put into making Hyde a human being. like, it's not just that they're the same person, it's that he's thought about everything. any assertion that Hyde is spontaneous or authentic now has to mesh with the fact they're also extremely artificial.
that's the catch, right, that you'd be forgiven for thinking Hyde is a rawer, truer version of Jekyll, which is not untrue, but, crucially, it is still an act. and it should scare you that it comes naturally to him to put it on. Does that mean Hyde is just as real as Jekyll, or that Jekyll just never stops acting?
