One of the first Soviet diplomats, Vatslav Vorovsky (1871-1923), fell victim to political assassination in Switzerland where he was the official representative of the Soviet government to the Conference of Lausanne. On May 10 former White Army officer Maurice Konradi (1896-1947) shot Vorovsky dead and wounded two of his assistants. Conradi was supported by many White émigrés and Russian activists in exile, including Ivan Bunin, Ivan Shmelyov and Dmitry Merezhkovsky. The defense side made no secret of their desire to turn this trial into a trial for Bolshevism. As a result, the court, which received wide international resonance, acquitted Konradi and his accomplice Arkady Polunin (1889-1933) by a majority of 5 to overall 9 jury members votes, considering his act an act of just retribution against Soviet regime. According to the wording of the verdict, Conradi was found "acting under the pressure of circumstances arising from his past". The verdict was controversial internationally. USSR in response cut diplomatic relations and boycotted all Swiss goods. Vorovsky was buried at Mass Grave No. 7 of the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Red Square along with his wife who died of a heartbreak short after the murder. Later in life Conradi served in the French Foreign Legion in Africa and information about his death circulated in newspapers in 1931 which sadly turned out to be false. Immediately after the trial, the Swiss authorities issued a decree expelling Polunin from the country for abusing the right of asylum and violating public order. Polunin then moved to Paris and died under mysterious circumstances in Dreux on 23 February 1933.
