Coming back to Westwick wasn’t ideal, but Neela knew that it had to be done. Not that she had anything against the city she now considered home, but living away from her responsibilities for about a year now had made her rethink some things. One thing that she couldn’t keep postponing was talking to Hyde. They still have a few things to work on, and after spending as much time apart from him as she did, Neela finally felt confident enough to reach out to him again and try to work on their differences. She still had feelings for him, but some things had to change in order for them to survive, that was for sure.
Granted, she wasn’t going to simply show up at his place uninvited, so, she sent him a text saying she was back in Westwick and asking if he was willing to chat with her, after all, she did leave him without looking back and would completely understand if he didn’t want to see her again. Neela was glad to receive a positive answer, so after a meeting at USC and stopping by a grocery shop to get them a bottle of wine, she went to Hyde’s place—their old house—and knocked on his door. Hopefully they’d be able to come out of this in a good way.
There was a smile on her face when she saw him, although… he did look more tired than what she could remember. it was still a highly familiar face.
“Hyde.” She said, still smiling as she raised her hand to show him the bottle of wine. “Thanks for having me. I brought wine. May I come in?”
The text had floored him. Hyde always hoped to hear from Neela again, hoped that she would come back to town. He’d dreamed about it, prayed for it. But he hadn’t expected it. Not on this particular day. He had spent the time after replying to her text pacing the floors and, when his nerves got the best of him, taking a few shots. Ignoring the lingering realization that alcohol was becoming an unhealthy crutch. It wasn’t the time to let those skeletons out of the closet. He needed the liquid courage.
There were so many ways he had imagined her return to town. He wanted to pull her into a hug. He wanted to say how terribly he’d missed her. He wanted to laugh and say ‘took you long enough’ and pretend she’d never left. All of that was thrown out when he opened the door. She was beautiful. She’d always been beautiful, but after going so long without seeing her, only in pictures and memories --- she was stunning. It was like he was face to face with a stunning stranger. And at the same time... face to face with his best friend. For a moment, he genuinely forgot how to breathe.
“Of course,” he finally managed to say, too caught up in her smile to force one of his own. He stepped back, gesturing for her to walk inside. “You look... nice, you look nice.”
“Honestly I have no idea” Amelia replied, not hiding the confusion in her face. “I mean, this is one of those things I know I knew once in my life but right now? I feel that with age I get dumber, I would make a fool of myself in one of those TV shows. Like, a fifth grader does know more than I do, you know?”
“There is nothing wrong with admitting you don’t know something. I asked because I only learned this the other day. I guess we can’t be too hard on ourselves, I don’t know about you but I don’t spend a lot of my free time researching sea otters, so how were we supposed to know they need to consume 25-40 percent of body weight daily to avoid freezing to death?”
choijaehyn:
“What?” Jaehyun’s expressions went from shocked to a smile really quick, so there wasn’t much room left to think he wasn’t joking as he continued speaking. “Are you saying I’m not confident enough? I thought you were supposed to be my friend. What the hell, man?” He ended up chuckling though. “I’ve been good. We’re moving to another office in LA, a bigger one and the contractor my partner has hired has been bullshitting us, so that’s annoying. I feel like I’m going to end up spending more money than I had first intended to just to finish this nightmare early.” Shaking his head, he still laughed a little. “Got any plans for the holidays?”
“No, no, not you, I was talking about... you know... in general.” Hyde attempted a save, but he knew Jaehyun was only joking, so he laughed too and shrugged it off. “I’m guessing it’s too late to fire him?” He frowned. “That isn’t fair. I hope you can figure out another way, or at least not be forced to go too over budget.” He shook his head. It had been awhile since he’d had to spend holidays alone, but he was trying not to dwell on that. It was hard when Neela’s absence was always lingering. “Ordering takeout and staring at the TV, probably. But at least I get some vacation time from work, that part is nice.”

Christmas always had different phasesfor him. When he was young, the ones who decorated the house were thehousemaids. His parents didn’t bother a lot because as long as the colorsmatched everything in a perfect color scheme, that was what mattered the most. His sister had a little more luck, because their father allowed her to have atree in her room. But this was something that was allowed to him – for some oddreason. The first time Woojin decorated something for Christmas was when hemoved out from his parents’ house and since then, he made sure this traditiondidn’t die because in some way this symbolized his freedom too. “Between blueand white and… red and green, I think I prefer the blue and white too.” Headmitted with honesty. “I mean, if this was only my tree, I would have chosenonly white because I really like monochromatic trees.”
Hyde nodded. “The colors go together better.” There was nothing wrong with the more traditional green and red, but they did seem to clash. The only thing that made him partial to it was the color scheme reminded him of the few good Christmases he’d had during his childhood, celebrated in foster homes that held only heartwarming memories --- the families that treated him like he was just a kid that wanted love. Even though they had come to abrupt endings and he’d been moved into another house each time, it still made him smile to look back on now. “They’re very pretty,” he agreed. “Maybe next year you can convince someone to go along with your idea. Or just do it and when they see it, they may change their mind.”
bethkress:
Beth shook her head. That was one of the downsides of living in Esperance… sometimes you’d find shops like these, who would sell cupcakes for twelve goddamn dollars and shamelessly so. “I bet my roommate’s taste better anyway.” She shook her head. “I just wanted to munch on something while having coffee… do you want to go somewhere else? Preferably cheaper and that looks nicer?”
“People buy them to show off.” Or so he guessed, there wasn’t much reason otherwise. He’d learned from his students how important the silliest details could be on social media, and he assumed people liked to come here to post fancy dessert pictures on their Instagram. It was the only logical explanation he could come up with. “Yeah, I don’t think I’ll be getting anything here,” he chuckled, “I’m not looking to go in debt over cupcakes.”
Having a dog was still a very new experience for Joon but any chance he got, he was practically glued to the pup. He figured that wasn’t such a bad thing though. It helped with training. And Gizmo already seemed to get protective because the second someone came close to them, Gizmo stopped playing around and backed himself into Joon’s lap while giving a couple barks. “It’s okay,” Joon reassured his pup before looking up at the company with a smile. “He’s a harmless ball of fluff, promise. I still can’t tell if that’s his way of saying he’s scared or if he thinks he’s ferocious.” Which was partially a joke because Joon could easily pick him up with one hand.
“Thinks? He is ferocious. Look at him, he looks like he could swallow me whole.” Hyde chuckled and bent down, holding his hand out as a peace offering for the dog to sniff or bite if he wanted. If he thought he could take care of an animal and balance his work life as well as give it the attention it deserved, he would adopt one immediately. Unfortunately, he had his doubts. “What’s this man eating beast’s name?”
Finally. It was after her shift and she wanted to check up on her father, hoping and praying that he was alright. She hadn’t seen her father in a while since her shifts at the hospital had gotten busier with sick people and she hadn’t had time to stop by and see him, no matter how many promises she made to him. she couldn’t get a chance to see him. But when she came around the corner and pulled out her phone, she just couldn’t do it. She couldn’t dial the number to her father’s room to talk to him, scared that it was her last phone call to him. She wanted to hide and wish that Henry Peltier didn’t have cancer that was killing him. So Mercedes went to the stairs of the hospital, the only place she thought she could be alone, and just cried. She didn’t know how long she cried, but she was quietly crying until she heard the door open, and she quickly wiped her tears. “I wasn’t…crying…” she croaked, her voice betraying her. “I just…I just needed some time to myself…”
It tugged at Hyde’s heartstrings to see the woman sitting alone. He hardly had time to wonder what she was doing before she was quick to come to her own defenses --- giving him the answer before he could ask. “I wasn’t going to suggest you were,” he shrugged as the door closed behind him, offering her a gentle smile. “But, you know,” pulling a pack of pocket tissues out of his coat, he held them out towards her, “for future reference... there’s nothing wrong with shedding a few tears. I’d go as far as to say it’s a good thing. Letting emotions stay pent up, that’s where the trouble comes in.”
does it ever hit you how truly lonely you are? like you have this terrible realization that this world has seven and a half billion people and yet you are still so alone?

If you were to sum Hyde Floro up in one word, it would be ‘kind’. He was the type of person that would give another the shirt off his back without consideration, the last five dollars to his name if they needed it. He’d always been that way, regardless of the rough start he’d had in life. Born to addicts, he spent his first few weeks after birth recovering from the drugs in his system before he was put into foster care. There was no sense of stability or permanence, no one to truly look after him. It was okay — it was the only life he had known. Though he was a smart well-behaved kid, he was shy and quiet, and the older he got the less willing peopled seemed to be to take a chance on him. He spent years with a few good guardians and a few that weren’t so good. None of it turned him bitter or cold. As he bounced around homes and schools he held onto hope that one day a family would decide he was worth the patience it took for him to open up. He never found that family. Instead, he found Sarah. He was fifteen when he met her. She became his first real friend, the first person that seemed interested in knowing Hyde for the boy he was rather than his backstory. She was the first person that pushed him to let his walls down, and she was the first (and only) person he fell in love, madly in love, with. They were just kids, but it didn’t matter to them. They became high school sweethearts, the two of them against the world, and soon enough he was getting down on one knee. Months turned to years and that turned into a decade of breakfasts together. It was a blur. It was bliss. They had a life planned. They were going to reach their dreams, they were going to start a family and have everything they wanted. Hyde didn’t realize the mistake he was making by putting his everything into one person until it was too late, until her bags were packed and he was sitting in the house they’d bought together by himself, staring at a meaningless wedding band. He’d been told that it was better to have loved and lost, but it hurt in ways he could have never imagined. A pain so strong it was physical, left with nothing more than memories of the only person who could heal him. He would have went with her. He would have given up everything, given her everything. But she’d had a list of excuses. She didn’t want to settle. She’d put all that she had into their relationship. She wanted to find herself now, and he wanted her to be happy. Unfortunately for Hyde, she took his happiness with her. She was the only light he had ever known and without her presence, without her hand in his, he didn’t know who he was. He felt like a shell of a person. Coping the only way he knew how, he turned to throwing himself into work, shutting down again, sharing empty smiles and soothing the ache with alcohol. It wasn’t a permanent fix, but he told himself that it helped. His wife was gone, she’d taken the promised future with her, and the wound would never stop feeling fresh. He had no way to contact Sarah, to know if she was okay, and time didn’t make it easier. With every day that passed the longing for another chance to see her grew stronger. She was looking for things to complete her in other places and he was stuck in the place he’d always been, still holding onto hope that one day she would return. Hope was all he had left, and when that finally chipped away, Hyde didn’t know how (or if) he’d get by.

choijaehyn:
Jaehyun was glad to have Hyde by his side. Whenever that happened, it’d always grant him some good times. “They do. I almost feel like going up there and asking for a dose of confidence, myself.” He chuckled. “It’s been a while, Hyde… how’ve you been?”
“It’d be helpful,” Hyde laughed too, shaking his head. “I’ve been doing alright. Work has been keeping me busy, but I’ll have awhile off for the holidays.” He was never sure if he appreciated the time off or not --- relaxing was nice, but after the first couple of days, he was left feeling bored and alone. “How about you?”
kairamalhorta·:
Kaira laughed when she heard him, stepping down from her ladder and shook her head. “Thank you-and oh gods no, it won’t be open Christmas, but we’re closing early on Christmas Eve.” she answered.
He was slightly bummed --- it would be nicer to spend the day in a decorated place with friendly faces than home alone --- but he assumed most places would be closing on Christmas. “That’s nice, no one should have to work their holiday away!”
“Okay, first of all—what?” Beth stood there, incredulous as the attendant told her how much she would be paying for a cupcake in this new, fancy-as-hell bakery that was having its grand opening in Esperance. “Twelve dollars for a cupcake, can you believe that?” She turned to the nearest person to her and shook her head, motioning her hand towards the cupcakes. “They don’t even look that good, oh my God? Do you think it’s really worth it?”
“Absolutely not,” he answered without hesitation. “You could make dozens at home for less money than that, and I’m sure they’d taste just as good. Unless they’re sprinkled with pure gold, there’s no reason for a dessert to be over a couple of dollars. Even then, I’m not sure it would be worth it...”
