He’d heard Jack complaining about something or other, mentioning Marla’s name, and decided to spice things up by stealing all of the chemicals from Marla’s place, including everything from the bathroom and anything illegal. Maybe that was predictable. It’s doing her a service, really.

Standing with his foot on TJ’s neck, Tyler presses him facedown into the concrete and holds him there, expecting he’ll tap out any minute. He’s been a slippery little son-of-a-bitch until now, it was lucky for Tyler that some judo-style grab got the better of him. Capturing him in a twist, putting his weight on his arm. Now they’re both on the ground and Tyler is still pressing down, listening.

The noise of the gathered group is cacophonous until the moment of struggle, that’s when all sound in the room drops except for the two in the middle. Each pair of eyes ready for the moment of release, the moment of relief and then everything they just saw will be briefly forgotten as it’s replaced by another two tearing into one another.

Less than a minute has passed. The fight took about five. It’s TJ’s first night.
