It’s been a while since Hyejin went out for a jog. After everything that’s been happening at work lately and with all the junk food she’s been eating, it was a wise decision to shed some of the stress and weight that she gained. Plus, going out for runs didn’t make her feel lazy. She didn’t have many friends, so this was a good way to enjoy herself. 

She stopped only for a moment to catch her breath. She slid off her small backpack and removed a bottle of water from it. She chugged it all down, before letting out a large sigh and leaned up against a stone wall behind her. Her eyes scanned the usual, dangerous streets of Baekap district. Not many people were out and about today, which wasn’t weird. Not many people felt safe walking out in these streets. Hyejin didn’t mind it thought - she could somewhat protect herself. 

She threw the water bottle into a nearby trashcan, slipped on her bag, and went on her way again. Just one more run around the neighborhood and that’d be it for the day. Her plan didn’t go as she wanted - nothing ever usually does - when she stopped in front of an alleyway. To anyone not paying close attention, it looked like a couple of large men piling some belongings into their van. But, something told Hyejin to take a closer look and she did. That was no belongings being put into a van - it was a man. 

“Hey, stop!” Hyejin yelled as she tossed her stuff aside. She ran into the alley and felt a familiar energy surrounding her. “Stop it! Leave him alone!”

It only took two steps, out of the small apartment on the landing (the pizza guy had a nice ass and Tao kinda sorta stared). And as Tao turned, hot cardboard box still in his hands, intending to get back to his apartment he watched the door closing with definitive click - the lock was on.

And he was left standing outside with hot pizza in his hands feeling like an utter fool that he was. The universe probably did not approve eyeing random strangers butts. Universe could kiss Tao’s ass - yet there he was with no means to get into his apartment. Tao flicked the box open and took out one slice of the pizza. It smelled good. 

Leaning on his door with his back, Tao took one bite, then another, while his mind whirled with ideas. starting with lockpicking (not really his forte). Breaking the door (costly). Crashing at some friend (hmmm, maybe). His eyes fell on the view behind the window in front of him and dawned on him - balconies.

Ten minutes later he was hanging on the balustrade of the first floor balcony, peering into small dirty apartment. He winked to the small girl staring at him mouth opened wide and lifted his body up, and up. It was easy, it was great - he was brilliant. hopefully no one steals his pizza left on his doorstep. 

It took him less than 10 minutes to reach fourth floor. Good thing he left his balcony door open, heaving upwards he landed on the balcony and shoved open the glass door, strutting in pleased with himself - and stopping mid-step. It didn’t look like his place. It wasn’t his place. His eyes widened. Shoot.

The perfect way to end a tiring long day, is with a hot shower. A very long hot shower. Hyejin stood in her shower, letting the hot water fall down her back; a content smile visible on her lips. After the day she had, she needed some time to herself. It’s been a while since she devoted time to taking care of herself. She placed her head under the running water and a small sigh fell from her lips. That felt good. 

After a couple of minutes, she exited the shower and walked into her bedroom. Tonight, she would stay in, actually cook herself dinner, and watch television. It’s been a while since she cooked, too. For the past weeks, it’s been nothing but ramen noodles and take-out. Now, when she looked at ramen noodles, she wanted to throw up. She walked over to her drawers and pulled out a large white tee, along with some black socks.

“I really need to do this more often..” The words trailed off as she heard a strange noise coming from her small living room. She bit down on her bottom lip. She finished slipping on her socks, then quietly exited her bedroom. Was someone or something in her home? Or, was Hyejin being paranoid? Again? She’s been watching a lot of the news and heard of reports of burglars breaking into homes, around her area. Or, it could be that one of the LOTUS members finally found her; and was here to finish her off for writing those many articles about them. Or, it could be nothing at all. 

Hyejin readied herself, physically and mentally, before running out into the living room. She stood frozen at the sight of a man standing in the middle of her living room. She clenched her hand into a fist and felt the familiar crackle of lightning beginning to form. “Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my home?”

Sipping her morning coffee, Jinah opened the newspaper set out in front of her. She was always on the lookout for the government’s next step. It won’t do her and the organization well if they were not on alert. Being the Chief Warlord of Lotus, it was Jinah’s obligation to keep the rebellion’s fire alive. Ever loyal to the cause, she plotted their next move against the government, scanning for events that they could possibly ambush. 

Flipping through the second page, Jinah blinked when she read headline against Lotus and its beliefs plastered on paper for South Korea to see. It had been one of their biggest exposes in a long while. Propaganda against the rebellion movement was not uncommon to Jinah. She just didn’t think that someone would be so blatant about their disapproval. 

It was her job to keep the name of the organization untainted by pesky journalists. 

Placing the open newspaper down on her desk, she leaned back against her chair and weighed her options. She did not know if the woman was an experiment or a human — it would not be wise to track her down herself, especially that they have not yet met. 

“Look for this Ahn Hyejin. I want her location,” Jinah said casually, addressing her right hand man as if she was merely asking for another fill of caffeine. “Do not harm the target. Find her, and leave her to me.”

“Incredible article, Hyejin,” The young woman’s boss told her, as she passed by her desk. “Hopefully, the people will truly ban together against those gangsters. They’re no rebellion - just people who want an excuse to hurt others.”

“I agree and thank you,” Hyejin nodded her head, once her boss walked off. A small sigh fell from her lips as she leaned back into her chair. She removed her glasses and rubbed at her eyes. Another day, another article printed.  

Hyejin recalled that when she first took on the job, her boss told her that she could write about anything that she wanted. It was Hyejin who decided to write against LOTUS. She’d use her real name, too. She wasn’t afraid to speak out her mind. Her boss warned her that it was dangerous, but Hyejin didn’t care. Just like the rebellion group, she was an experiment, too. Anyone who messed with her would get a taste of her ability.

Once work was finished with, she rose from her chair and gathered her things. It would soon be late and she intended on getting home, before it got dark. She didn’t live in a nice district and it wouldn’t be wise to walk around when it was late out. Her stomach growled with hunger as she neared her home. She thought about what she might have for dinner. Order take-out? Or, she could actually cook for herself for once; that was a good idea, too.

7. “The last time I ever cared about anyone was my mom,” Hyejin answered. “She died a long time ago and, since then, I’ve never met anyone else who truly cares about me. I don’t remember any bad memories of her. She was a good woman. All my bad memories are of my father and step-mother.” She shook her head and sighed. 

8. There was one bad memory. A memory that she locked away in the back of her mind. Bringing out that memory... she didn’t want to. At the time, when she committed the crime, she was happy. She was free and she’d no longer have to deal with her father and that dreadful step-mother. But now... every time she thought about it, even for a second, she felt guilty. She felt disgusted with herself. “Before I got sent to the island, I killed my father and step-mom. I was mad and I was tired of him treating me, like, trash. Getting rid of him... it was the best thing to have ever happened to me.”

3. “A trait that I hate about myself,” Hyejin bit her bottom lip in thought. “I have anger issues.” Hyejin sighed. “I inherited from my father, unfortunately.” Her mind flashed back to the numerous times, where she let her anger get the best of her. That’s why she spent the majority of her time alone. She didn’t want people to see how horrible she became, when she was angry. How dangerous she was. If she could take away anything about her, it’d be that

9. “I don’t think I have any enemies,” Hyejin said. “Or, I probably do have some - I’ve just never had the pleasure to meet them.” Hyejin recalled the many times she received threats from LOTUS members, after writing about them in her articles. If anyone read her articles, they’d know that she always encouraged humans and experiments to band together; and to get rid of the dangerous rebellion group. “I hope to never meet them face to face.”

16. “I’m horrible when it comes to riding a bike.” Hyejin admitted. “I never learned how to ride one, properly. Every time I get on one, I always fall off and end up scraping my knees.” Her hand instinctively moved to her knee and she began to rub it. The other day she attempted at riding her bike, again, and failed. She ended up crashing into a couple of trashcans and a huge, bloody bruise formed on her knee. She called off work that day and spent the whole day, lying on the couch.

The wind was cool on his skin. Blowing a little too strong for his liking, perhaps, but it felt pretty nice nonetheless. Up here, (what was it… the fiftieth floor?) there was a strange sense of liberation, as though Jimin didn’t need to care about anything that was going on below him, which was exactly what he wanted. As much as he enjoyed his job, meeting new kinds of people every day and what not, he just needed to get away. 

It had been a while since he last penned down anything, so one could say that this was Jimin’s quest for inspiration. He had his arms spread open, balancing himself precariously on the ledge, eyes closed and lost in his own little world. 

There was a little voice niggling at the back of his mind though, and his brows furrowed as he tried to tune it out, but it only seemed to grow louder and louder. That voice sounded awfully familiar too. Jimin turned his head, glancing over his shoulder and letting out a yelp when he was met with an awfully familiar face as well. 

“What- Hyejin? What are you doing here?” Jimin frowned, puzzlement crossing his features as he noted the paleness in her complexion, along with the shaken look in her eyes as she told him to come down. But he wasn’t finished here yet! 

“No, you don’t understand… I’ll be fine, you can go back down.” He flashed her a small smile, before turning back to the front, teetering forward dangerously.

   “You’re not fine! But, you will be, if you just come back down and we talk about everything.” How did Jimin have the strength to do this? How has anyone not noticed this young man, standing out here on a ledge like this? Hyejin dared herself to lean a little bit more out the large window. She continued to hold out her hand for him to take. She’d stay up here for as long as she’d have to. Hyejin was going to make him come down - whether he liked it or not. 

   “Stop walking!” Hyejin shouted loudly. “Listen to me, Jimin. Don’t jump! You’re going to regret as you’re falling to your death! I’m sure we can think of something - anything. If you won’t let me help you, then at least... let me call someone. A therapist or someone. They’ll be able to help.”

   Hyejin looked down once more, before taking in a deep breath. This was his last chance. If he wasn’t going to come down from off that ledge, she’d go up there and force him off. Was that even possible, without her falling to death as well? It was a worth shot. If he wasn’t going to listen to what she had to say, she was going to have to use force. She wasn’t going to let him end his life this way. She wasn’t going to let him do this to himself. He was young and had too much to live for. “Jimin... do not make me come up there.” She warned him.

   Hyejin was never one for stressful situations. She has imagined many things. She imagined herself becoming the best journalist there ever was. She imagined herself going on a beautiful vacation. She imagined herself rich and she’d never have to work a day in her life. But, she never imagined herself on the 50th floor, yelling out a large window, trying to convince a good friend of hers not to jump off a ledge. She wasn’t good at this type of stuff. Jimin always seemed happy-go-lucky, so this was confusing to her. She didn’t dare look down. Unfortunately, she had a very large breakfast and looking down will result in her throwing up. No. 

   “Jimin, please, don’t do this!” Hyejin shouted. How could he stand on that ledge like that? She’d never be able to do that. The second she try to walk out on that ledge, she’d slip and fall to her death. “I’m here! I’ll help you! Don’t do it!” She held out her hand, gesturing for him to take it. “Come down and we can talk about anything and everything. You have friends that love you! You have me!” 

   Please, don’t make me walk out there, she though to herself. She took a quick glance down and breathed in a long, shaky breath. Her heart felt like it was running in a marathon and she couldn’t think straight. The palm of her hands were clammy with sweat and her legs felt wobbly. “Jimin, I’m begging you. Come down. Come down and you’ll be okay. Don’t do this.” I’m legit seconds away from pissing myself.
