Large (Wikimedia)
This dramatic scene of life aboard a ship is Henry Scott Tuke’s All Hands to the Pumps, painted between 1888 and 1889.
Tattered sails and flags speak to the ship’s age: possibly a reason for the flooded below-decks, now being pumped out by the frantic sailors. The result of their efforts pours onto the surface of the ship, joined by the waves crashing against its side.
Meanwhile, some of the men look up, entreating their fellow crew members to join them in their urgent task.
