So I normally try really hard not to date or dilute myself with posts that don’t directly relate to either my art or my programming, but I am breaking my rule just this once because this is important.
Growing up I wasn’t very social or popular, I tended to keep to myself and my siblings, I just didn't really fit in with the other kids or their interests. As it happened eventually I wound up getting my first video game system (a second hand game boy) around 6 after a particularly nasty injury sent me to the ER, I got better right away but while I was recovering I played Pokemon Blue. After this I steadily got more and more into Nintendo games, they were a nice way for a lonely and awkward kid to entertain himself. Eventually Pokemon Silver came out, for me this was THE game, it changed everything I thought about game play, but more than that, it got me hooked on gaming. The thing that really blew me away was the fact that there was a post game thrown in simply because it could be, there was no need for it but it was included nonetheless. After playing Silver I was hooked on Pokemon for life, to this day it remains my favorite franchise by far. I love it so much in fact that when I first started out on the internet it was making Pokemon fan work, I was still young and rather isolated at the time but almost instantly I was met with a tidal wave of positive feedback from the warm and welcoming Pokemon community, within mere months I improved the quality of my work by miles. More importantly though, I made friends, I know it seems odd to say some of my closest friends are people I met online but its true all the same. These are the people that pushed me to actually try programming and art seriously rather than dismissing my work as mediocre attempts to impersonate things I like. In short, in some way or another, Nintendo has been a big inspiration for me and a major reason I am the person I am today.
Why does this all matter today though? Well as many of you may have heard, Iwata passed away yesterday. Normally the death of a company president, while sad, isn't a big deal, but Iwata was different. He truly believed in his company and his opinions on game design and his passion for gaming have been huge inspirations for me personally. That combined with his relentlessly positive attitude and insistence that fun and accessibility be key factors of gaming are what make being a Nintendo fan so enjoyable and rewarding. Perhaps the biggest way he has impacted me though was the effort he put into the games I have played, he is the reason that Kanto was put into Pokemon silver. The game was finished and there was simply no more room, but thanks to the work he did compressing it he managed to fit an entire second country into the game along with the phenomenal ending on top of Mount Silver. I know it seems silly to some to get emotional over video games like this, but these games had a tremendous impact on me and have made me smile at some of my darkest points. In short, even though its late, I want to say thank you for being both an entertainer and an inspiration Iwata.
