Basic Sewing Tutorial: What You Need

OK, first of all, I haven’t posted anything this week because I’ve had a ‘orrible cold and I’ve been in bed, sick as a dog. I’m back now though, and here, as promised, is the first of those sewing tutorials - this one isn’t even Sewing 101. Think of it as Sewing 000, this post is the bit where we gather our materials. I promise I won’t make you buy anything expensive. Everybody taking notes? Good.

Ignore all those books telling you you need huge piles of fancy equipment and £50 gold-plated scissors and real emery pincushions. The core equipment list, skimping a little maybe, looks like this.

This was a kareoke competition that my friend persuaded me to enter because it had a cash prize, and then didn't come with me. And then it turned out to be a huge popularity contest and some girl who brought about seventy friends won.

Sketches from a church open mic night that my dad dragged me along to. I don't go to his church, but I'm the minister's daughter, if he wants me to make up the numbers for him I guess I'm gonna go because I don't get to see him enough and also I'm sweet like that.

The only people I recognise from this are my younger step-brother Adam in the bottom corner, and his girlfriend Hannah in top left.

Some quick sketches from ages ago.

Burton and Soto both have enough glamour to alter their hairstyle to whatever they like at any time (Burton's is way, way less than Soto's, though, he wouldn't be able to sustain anything more than a couple of inches away from his body). Soto normally has his hair spiked up and bright like Trickster Paranorman, but the other go-to hairstyle is dreads like these.

I didn't draw his wings. The luna moth wings aren't the real ones anyway and he doesn't need them to fly with.

I like his sleeves, I'm gonna have to do a proper picture of the University of Miranea teaching surgeon's uniform robes one of these days. They're long sleeves, but they have a tape on the inside and a button on the outside so he can roll them up and fasten them tight.

Darrin has apprentice scribe robes and they have a similar setup, but he has tight inner sleeves and the outer robe sleeves are loose, about elbow length and he can button them onto his epaulettes so he doesn't get them covered in ink and glue.

Storm headshots. Incidentally the Storm/Todd ship name is now Duck Downs.

As for the bottom right picture, Storm often has violent nightmares, often about Todd being completely taken over by the Colony, and he'll end up sleepwalking. Storm's hats are part of his psi-blocking setup and he normally sleeps with a blocked beanie on, but if it comes off then every un-shielded person in the entire house might become subject to the nightmare as well. Fun stuff, especially when he's got into the bathroom and is trying to beat up a tile wall.

These guys are from an RP with alachatte (aka Minty) that was a reboot of an RP forum game that she'd been running before. That forum was called Mandala Mists, the reboot has not really got off the ground, mostly due to my tendency to think I'm bothering people if I haven't spoken to them in a while.

Anyway. The top one is a guy who was made from scratch and never got played at all. His name's Owen, he's a Welsh dragon (as opposed to Cyrus, Minty's Chinese dragon who owned the place). If he had been played, his story would probably have been that he would be hired on as a labourer to help build the spa, and then as a security guard/bouncer. He is fiercely loyal and honours contracts to the letter. Also, he's technically royalty and very proud of this, except that the Welsh dragons were chased off their land several centuries ago. You should not bring this up.

The other guy is the reboot of the character I had in the original Mandala Mists. He's basically what happens after you create a character, then have five years maturing and learning about things like culture stereotypes, sexuality, how to write genders other than your own, personalities, realistic talents, why prostitution is not romantic - all that fun stuff.

Cyrus still found Reishen in a puddle after he'd been beaten up by one of his johns. Rei was a lot less starry-eyed about it, though. He doesn't know the tea ceremony, he plays the samisen very badly and if anything he'd be wary of anyone who tried to make him wear bright colours and grow his hair out now. Oh, and he doesn't think Cyrus is some kind of blessed lord and saviour, but he knows he owes him big-time.

That picture there, with him wearing servicable grey and blue with short hair, and planting sakura trees in the spa's grounds, that's the happiest he's been in years.

Burton being a model, which is his other job, the one Iris got him with one of her designer friends.

The top one didn't have much of a direction, we were just talking about silk shirts and tight silver jeans, but the other one was because Joey - who plays this designer, Sigrid Amsel - was talking about an Urban Warfare line, and that got me thinking about all those holster bags and helmet-looking hoodies you see sometimes on Tumblr. And then I realised that Burton is pretty, but very small and skinny, if he's going to be in an Urban Warfare photoshoot, how, exactly?

So that's how he comes to be the sprightly scout-type character with the staff. Obviously the shoot had other models of different sizes with guns and baseball bats and swords. One of them may even have had a stake.

I may even draw the group shot if I get the time.

RILEY SLOVAKIS (belongs to beyondsociety)

BS: Riley is the lord and master of Lost Souls’s kitchens, and Serena’s big fluffy puppy. A werewolf who was kicked out of multiple packs, he picked up a job at Lost Souls about two decades ago, and he’s been a constant fixture ever since. Having recently found himself with a real family by way of Serena and Kal (both of whom he loves with all his heart and will protect with this life), Riley’s mellowed out a lot, but he still loves jerking Leland around and teasing Soto just as much as everyone else.

LB: Incidentally, yeah, Riley's a lot older than he looks, but this is a supernatural RP, what's new. Riley is one of about, oh, four truly morally good characters in this RP, and also the dependable, sort of normal type - which is a good thing for Serena, who's definitely had enough of exciting men. He's also the best cook in the game, and Burton's best friend. Probably the most unexciting werewolf you'll ever meet, which is why we like him.

SERENA BELMONT (played by me)

LB: Serena's a puck, on the low end of the fae caste system, which I'll go into later, but that's mainly been the least of her problems in life. The main one was Kal's father, Tilyon Serenya (she did marry him but fae are matriarchal so she was never going to be Serena Serenya). Tilyon was extremely violent, even more so after the divorce, and she spent several years running from pillar to post in fear of her life, until he wrecked the Lost Souls looking for her and Kal and ended up being jailed. She's nominally a bar singer with a number of low-paying side jobs, but lately Jenny got her a much better job in the library daycare. She's still always looking over her shoulder and breaks up with Riley every few months, but life is getting better for Serena.

BS: Serena is lovely, and I’m so happy that she and Riley finally came together as a couple; she deserves it so much. She’s been through a lot of shit, and no one deserves a cuddle-puppy like Riley more than her. I admire her for being able to get through everything with Tilyon, and even more for making her life work again afterwards. I’m happy for her.

KALTOR BELMONT (played by me)

LB: Serena's son. He's about the equivalent of four, and since he's a puck, is the fastest toddler around. The fastest flying toddler. Luckily the adults around him all love him and some of them are even fast enough to keep up. He recently started calling Riley 'daddy', which made his life, basically. Oh, and the ratty pink bunny is called Elkie for no reason anyone can work out but may have something to do with an old flatmate of Serena's.

BS: Kal is just adorable. A lot of Riley and Leland’s gushing about him comes from me, I won’t lie. He’s such a sweet little kid, and the way he acts with everyone in the bar is just great. He and Elkie are the best unofficial mascots a bar could ask for.

In the 2nd of May picture, you can't see the necklace I'm wearing very well, but it was made from a piece of sea glass I picked up in Dorset, by the very talented theselkieofkalsoy. Also that jacket is now covered in doctorgeof badges.
