Finding this bit of gear was mostly luck; a find at the consignment place that just so happened to exist at the razor thin nexus of affordability and perfect fit. A rare impulse buy, justified post facto by the hope of it being useful later. Lo. The time has arrived. The top is the centerpiece, what she'd been looking for con/crit on: deep black leather with three stylistic cuts across the bust as if attacked by a militantly vegan werewolf. It terminates in a sharp V, accentuating the handsome slenderness of her stomach and the glinting belly button piercing centering it. Ripped up black jean shorts under a chunky belt and an asymmetric thigh strap, pared down wallet, phone, one little gadget just-in-case... but simply being around the friendly(?) neighborhood mercenary's probably a far more effective defense. Either way. Fun to play a little dress-up.

“ kitten? ” now that's the kind of diminutive that sets lady's hair on fire, makes her scrunch her face in an attempt to look pained, to hide the smile. maybe the fire is somewhere lower, but lady doesn't want to let riley know she really is that easy, or she wants to pretend riley doesn't have her hook, line & sinker. the problem with being such a blood & guts kind of person is that you're painfully honest, you gotta be, because the work is dirty & the pay doesn't come if you teeter around the subject matter.

money doesn't wait for your morality to settle, it wants to know if you're willing to dig your fingers in your target's intestines. tonight it's pyrotechnics, it's stage lights & safety regulations, making the theatre roar in delight as you all but blind the audience. for lady it's another kind of thrill, there's still pain to inflict but this time it's on people who expect a little pinprick, something to remember the night. that's why she is here & why she brought riley with her, “ yea, you pass with flyin' colors. ” to pretend there's a life for her beyond violence, that there's a path she can walk where all those impulses can be used for something else. like biting back, for instace.

“ worthy of a congrats, seriously. i mean, i'd clap, ” she struts over to a stack of cases in the corner of the hallway, the silver rimmed black boxes you always see backstage. “ but you're right about the luggage. i'm planning some fireworks. ” lady takes a handle in each hand & heaves them off the floor, turning to riley with a very self-satisfied grin,

“ my, uh ... what? ” she's caught herself stuttering like some blushing babe, both because riley's way with words always finds a way to make her lose the ability to speak, & because her friend's found herself a really nice leather piece. one of those tops that clings to the skin, showing off just enough to entice, while hiding away any noticeable unpleasantries. unlike a certain demon she knows, riley doesn't have the leisure to wear as much or as little as she likes. they're going somewhere with plenty of people with eyes like peeping toms. cool as a devil in the audience might be for tonight's crowd, lady's not in the habit of drawing attention, not with this side of her life anyway.

it's all her fault, as are most things that come with a free invitation to an underground concert. props of being a whiz with pyrotechnics, you get in for free when you edge close to putting the performers & the crowd in danger. she happens to be one of the best in the business, even if she limits herself to local circles & smaller bands that play only in derelict warehouses. the more graffiti the better.

she grunts a little just to get her foot back in the conversation, “ i don't know what that word means, but it sounds cute. i-i'm not some groupie, alright? ” not today at least, even if female-lead death metal is her jam. “ i work with these people. ” it doesn't pay very well, but it's always fun to watch the sparks fly, to see the stage set alight & look at all the attendees, dressed down in anticipation of the flames. “ as long as you got some leather on i'm sure nobody will mind. ” & damn, riley got it right on the first go around.

i think i'd me a bit more amicable to lieutenant arkham if they worked in lady's subdued but persistent struggle with mental illness even after she kills her father into her narrative, & obviously the american military does target disenfranchised people with its recruitment strategies & both the white rabbit & VP baines spell out that DARKCOM is exploiting mary because she was orphaned by tragedy & being a tool of state is a way to channel her anger. don't we all love writing that doesn't trust its audience to understand basic characterization?

this is an issue with nico's notes in DMC5 as well, where she states that lady doesn't hold romantic relationships with men nor does she seem to do much beyond devil hunting, that she's kind of messed up, but it's a little more excusable because it's an incidental, optional file & not a scene within the main story itself. this is also a hint in lady's moveset, with the kalina ann sporting attacks named hysteric & paranoia + the quote in my pinned, as well, being the clearest indication of how arkham's death at her hands left lady a fundamentally broken person, & while lieutenant arkham isn't at that stage of her character arc yet, what would improve her portrayal would be to forego the hallucinogenic gas entirely & have blood red visions of arkham plague her throughout the show, & maybe tie her change of heart regarding the makaians to her own broken family. threatening the father in front of his child as a parallel to her own past, almost becoming the very thing which set her on this course in the first place & robbing an innocent child of their parents.

although my personal politics do prohibit me from viewing netflix's mary as anywhere close to sympathetic, even despite whatever future, more game-accurate direction they might take her character because, to quote frankie boyle,

'not only will america come to your country & kill all your people, but what's worse is that they'll come back 20 years later & make a movie about how killing your people made their soldiers feel sad'

see, my problem now is that if i bring up my headcanon of lady being not just a devil hunter but a mercenary & contract killer on the side because the lesson she learned at the end of dmc3 is that humans & demons harbor within them the same capacity for evil, & thus rationalized it in her perpetual hunger for violence as acceptable to murder an equal amount of both as long as she can deem them evil, it sounds like a cope & purposefully contradictory to her netflix counterpart despite having written lady (on tumblr but mostly on discord) as an active member of both the demonic & criminal underworld years before the series was announced. on the plus side, my suggestion she's also a band groupie & an insane pyrotechnician who sets up firework displays that put both performer & audience in danger that nevertheless are a huge success because she's active in the black metal scene holds up
