The shrill sound of the teacher’s whistle pierces the air, startling Sehun enough that he doesn’t do much to block Hyungwon’s last ditch attempt to retaliate in his surprise. The force behind the blind throw catches him off guard, drawing a pained groan when his ex-boyfriend’s fist connects with his skin, his mouth filled with the taste of copper when the punch splits his lip. He isn’t given the chance to return the favor because there’s a third pair of hands yanking them apart, rough and Sehun doesn’t have to look up to see just how pissed off their teacher is. He glares back at Hyungwon in irritation, though its effect is lessened by the tears prickling at his eyes and the blood smeared across his face. The adrenaline is wearing off now and pain sears through his body, leaving Sehun to breathe harshly through his broken nose in an attempt to keep himself composed long enough to get away from Hyungwon. After all that, he can’t afford to let the other boy see him breakdown. Shrugging the teacher’s hands off of him roughly, uncaring about how much more he’ll be punished for the disrespect, he pushes past Hyungwon with a hard knock of his shoulders. “Fuck you Hyungwon,” He hisses one last jab as he heads for the infirmary, trying for annoyed in hopes that the other won’t hear the defeat in his voice.
physical pain stifled the emotional for hyungwon. it had since his brother had disappeared, since his parents started to tell him that it should have been him; that the people who had raised him and brought him into the world, wished he was dead in preference for his brother. the break up with sehun was meant to cut his heart out, it was meant to bleed out any lingering feelings or beliefs. the familiar wanted to dig out every bloody and flimsy piece of flesh that stung, rippled, quivered with the hurt that couldn’t be healed with stitches and times. the throbbing heat that came from the prickling bruises and splits of skin where blood blossomed out barely shielded hyungwon from the sight of sehun across from him, nose broken and stained with red. he didn’t understand why it wasn’t working, he didn’t grasp how no matter what he did -- the sight of his ex-boyfriend was like a smooth blade pressing deeper into his chest. hyungwon huffed in frustration, chest heaving with panted breaths and turned his gaze elsewhere. his lids flinched closed when sehun’s steps drew closer, the push past that had him stumbling to catch himself before he fell against. blood spit out at the floor, much to the annoyance of the teacher who hissed his name and told him to get to the infirmary, now.
with on hand up to dismiss the teacher, hyungwon turned away to begin heading for the infirmary. it was automatic to shove a hand into his pocket, using the other to wipe at the blood on his face and try to clean himself up. there’s three feet between hyungwon and sehuns, a distance he keeps as he glances at the span of the older males shoulders and back. it was strange to feel the pang of missing the other at that moment, to be flooded with memories of wrapping his arms around sehun’s waist and leaving kisses along the curve of his neck. teasing words and inside jokes, left in the skin and against his ear. mornings of nibbling the line of his shoulders until he annoyed the older boy awake. memories that his mind spat were stupid and he should forget, but was washed over with as he continued to leave smears of blood on the sleeve of his shirt and on the front when he brought it to his face. there’s a shudder of a laugh at the reverberation of sehun’s spiteful words that had been thrown during the entirety of their fight; its bitter on his tongue and painful in his lungs. it was an attempt to shed anyway the burn of tears in the back of his eyes. there was no chance he was going to let sehun see him be weak for him.
“was it fun to hit me, hyung? do you feel better now?” hyungwon asks, trying to keep his voice teased into a dance. a stinging burn stabbed up his arm, leading hyungwon to look down at the bruise of his knuckles from when he’d struck the other familiar. there was a flinch of recognition, and he balls his hand into a fist, clenching up the pain burns and dulls at the edges. self-destruction was the only way he could see himself becoming numb to everything, becoming stronger than everyone. if nothing mattered, nothing could hurt him or stop him. “i like knowing i still have such an effect on you. it’s cute seeing hyung so mad,” he prods, licking the taste of metal from his lips and wincing at the stinging touch to an open wound. every stabbing pain when he spoke, when he grimaced up an attempt of a smirk or bitter chuckle was better than the empty weight in his chest. the ugly remains of his heart still aching on every beat it still made for sehun.
