Cake kneeling to clean and tie Eiw's shoes after giving him his bag to try to protect him from the rain and it's just the best symbolism of their relationship of how much Cake gives and how much Eiw is soft and cared for and how much their falling apart is going to be Eiw pulling away, never Cake pulling away.

Cake would happily stay in this holding pattern forever, talking to girls but circling home to take care of Eiw and never taking space or time away from him, always taking care of him, loving him but never thinking about how he loved him while Eiw was painfully aware of how he loved Cake.

Eiw has this deep-seated and lifelong fear of losing Cake and the worst part is knowing that it's going to break them apart even if it also brings them back together. Because a fear like that, unspoken, a fear like that left to slowly rot will never allow a healthy friendship to flourish forever.

Especially when Cake would understand and listen, especially because all Cake wants to do is take care of his friend, to take care of the person he loves in ways he isn't even aware of yet.

Eiw is going to run a self-fulfilling prophecy where he drives Cake away out of love and jealousy and pain and need and Cake is going to have to either fight back or find a way through those defenses.
