As the youngest person in U.S. history to be put to death in the electric chair, 14-year-old George Stinney Jr. was so small that he needed to sit on a phonebook for the electrocution to work properly. And even then, it still took multiple jolts before the child was dead.⁠ ⁠ At the height of the Jim Crow era, Stinney had been accused of murdering two white girls in South Carolina. Though no physical evidence linked him to the crime, the police claimed that he had confessed to the murders. Many white Southerners were already convinced of his guilt, so he was given just a two-hour trial before he was sentenced to die in the electric chair in 1944. And tragically, his death ended up being even more horrific than planned. Since Stinney survived the first round of 2,400 volts, he was then forced to endure two additional rounds before dying in a room that reeked of burning flesh. Stinney's conviction would be overturned 70 years later.⁠

A small minority of Republicans would love to go back to this era. We cannot let that happen.
