Four Bodies Discovered in Wreckage of Santa Monica Plane Crash

The coroner’s office said Tuesday that four bodies were discovered in the wreckage of a plane crash at Santa Monica Airport.

Authorities recovered the bodies of two men and two women from the plain. Their names have not yet been released. It is believed that Mark Benjamin, CEO and president of Morley Builders, and his son Luke Benjamin, a senior project engineer at the company.

In addition, two cats and a dog were found among the plane wreckage.

A team from the National Transportation Safety Board has arrived at the crash site. Two large cranes were brought in on Monday to remove heavy steel trusses covering the twin-engine Cessna 525, and much of the burnt wreckage was pried from the hangar that collapsed on top of it.

The plane reportedly departed from Hailey, Idaho and then crashed around 6:20 p.m. It touched down at the airport, then veered off the runway and crashed into a hanger at which point it burst into flames.

According to an NTSB official, there was no communication with the pilot that indicated any type of problem prior to landing.

There is a voice recorder on the plane, NTSB investigators say, but they have not yet been able to recover it.  They are hoping it will provide some insight into what happened.

Morley Builders is a well-known construction company throughout Southern California. The company has offices in San Diego, Irvine, and Santa Monica and has been in business since 1947.

The crashed has caused a spike in concerns about having an airport right in the middle of such a crowded residential area. The airport was surrounded by farm land when it was built in the 1920s. The residential neighborhoods that currently surround the airport were established decades later.

“The crash occurred 150 feet away from houses. I mean, that’s the really scary thing. In the two years that we’ve lived here, there have been two crashes. There was one two blocks away and then this one,” said Santa Monica resident Stacey Abrams-Sherick.

A 30-year land and building agreement between the city of Santa Monica and the Federal Aviation Administration will expire in 2015.

Crash on 60 Freeway in Diamond Bar Fatally Injures 1

A woman was killed in a crash on the 60 Freeway in Diamond Bar, authorities said Saturday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash involved two vehicles and occurred on the westbound lanes just east of State Route 57 at approximately 7:48 a.m.

Authorities say a car with four occupants was rear-ended in the HOV lane at a high rate of speed. Police said the vehicle was struck from behind after it  had slowed for an unknown reason.

The car hit the center divider and skidded 60 yards before it came to a stop. According to the CHP, the driver of the second vehicle exited the freeway and dialed 911. Authorities initially reported the accident as a hit-and-run.

By the CHP’s description, the deceased was a Hispanic woman between 25 and 30 years of age. She died at the scene.

The other three people in the first vehicle were transported to UCI Medical Center for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not known.

A SigAlert was issued because the crash initially blocked four lanes of the thoroughfare. Three lanes remained blocked as of 9:45 a.m.

Thousand Oaks DUI Crash Kills Two

A single-vehicle accident on Monday left two people dead in Thousand Oaks.

According to authorities, the driver was drunk and speeding when he barreled into some construction equipment at 1601 Protero Road around 11:30 p.m.

The car contained two men and two women. Two of the passengers were declared dead at the scene. The driver and a third passenger survived with minor inquiries.

The driver, 22-year-old Collin Powell, was arrested and booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The investigation is ongoing.

According to California Highway Patrol officials in Ventura County, while the number of DUI fatalities since 2005 has been in steady decline, their work on spreading the word that drunk driving kills is not even close to being finished.

“We know the message is getting out there, however, any time we have one single traffic collision that claims the life of anybody where alcohol is involved we feel that we need to do our job even better,” said Miguel Duarte from the CHP.

Police Seek Hit-And-Run Driver Who Injured Montclair Crossing Guard

Last week, a 60-year-old woman was severely injured in a hit-and-run accident in Montclair. Authorities have released new information regarding the identity of the driver.

The incident occurred last Thursday morning at the intersection of Orchard Street and Fremont Avenue. Donna Omlin, who was working as a crossing guard to protect children, remains in the hospital.

Omlin was hit while holding a stop sign just after she had finished escorting several children across the road.

Montclair police are currently searching for 32-year-old Israel Carrion. They believe he was behind the wheel of the car that hit Omlin.

“During a search of the area, detectives did find the suspect’s vehicle and later got him identified and there’s currently an arrest warrant for the suspect,” said Sgt. Byron Kelly with the Montclair Police Department.

According to Omlin’s family, she has a long way to go on the road to recovery.

“She sustained extremely serious injuries. She’s had a few surgeries. We are hoping that she’s on the road to recovery. She’s up against another surgery tomorrow. She’s fighting through this,” Said Cindy Agnostini, Omlin’s niece.

Orange County Woman Released on $100k Bail After Being Charged in Bicyclist's Death

A woman, allegedly under the influence of prescription drugs, drifted into the bicycle lane in her SUV and fatally struck a cyclist on March 15. She was freed Wednesday after posting $100,000 bail, one day after she was charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Hasti Fakhrai-Bayrooti was arrested Tuesday at her Irvine home in connection with the death of Eric Billings, 54, of Rancho Santa Margarita, according to Gail Krause of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. An arraignment date was not immediately set.

Billings was reportedly riding south on Santa Margarita Parkway at approximately 6:45 on a Friday evening, when Fakhrai-Bayrooti’s 2003 Acura MDX drifted into the bicycle lane and stuck him south of El Toro Road.

On Tuesday, Fakhrai-Bayrooti was charged with vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated without gross negligence, according to Deputy District Attorney Anna McIntire.

McIntire said the defendant had an anti-anxiety drug called Alprazolan, and Buprenorphine, which is used to help with opiate addictions, in her system.

Billings was a married father of four and owned Quest Construction.

Chico State Nursing Student Fatally Hit by a Suspected Drunk Driver

A 21-year-old woman from Livermore has succumbed to injuries she sustained when she has hit while riding her bicycle Sunday evening.

Chico Police were notified by Enloe Medical Center officials that Kristina Chesterman died at 1:40 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a police news release. The hospital confirmed that Chesterman was brain dead, while her body awaited organ donation.

Chesterman was a Chico State University nursing student and a registered organ donor whose family indicated her generous spirit and legacy will live on through the donation program, police said.

Since Chesterman died, an additional charge of gross vehicular manslaughter will be sought against the alleged driver, Riley Hoover, 19.

Hoover was originally arrested Sunday evening on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence causing serious injury or death.

According to Chico police, Chesterman was allegedly hit by a northbound GMC Envoy driven by Hoover when she was riding her bike north in the northbound bike lane of Nord Avenue over the Big Chico Creek bridge. She came to rest near a fueling station driveway after being launched approximately 120 feed. He bicycle traveled another 210 feet before stopping in front of a residence.

Police were notified of the accident at 10:54 p.m. Based on the damage to the vehicle, including parts missing from the vehicle found at the scene, police believed the driver—Hoover—caused the crash involving Chesterman. He was arrested at 11:21 p.m.

Laguna Beach Police Officer Fatally Hit On South Coast Highway

Authorities said a Laguna Beach motor police officer was fatally hit on South Coast Highway late Saturday evening.

While responding to a “reckless driving call,” Laguna Beach Police Officer Jon Coutchie was involved in a collision with a Chevrolet pickup truck at the intersection of South Coast Highway at Cleo Street, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:34 p.m.

According to investigators, Coutchie, 42, was traveling at a high rate of speed. It was unclear whether he had time to put on his warning signals.

Coutchie was declared dead at the scene, and fellow officers draped an American flag over his body.

Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. According to authorities, the truck driver was fully cooperating with the investigation.

Coutchie was born in Tucson, Arizona, and grew up in Orange County. He graduated from Laguna Hills High School in 1989.

He was sworn in as an officer in 2009 after completing the Goldenwest Police Academy.

He had earlier served two years of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to the department, Coutchie was chosen to serve as a motor officer, a coveted position, in March of 2013.

He is survived by his mother, father, step-sister, brother, and girlfriend.

The department has not experienced a line-of-duty death since 1953, police said.

Governor Jerry Brown also made a statement about the officer’s passing.

Brown said “Anne and I extend our deepest condolences to Officer Coutchie’s loved ones. As we mourn the loss of Officer Coutchie, we commit to honoring his service and remembering his sacrifice.”

7-Year-Old Fatally Hit at Santa Fe Springs Car Show

A car lost control exiting a warehouse in Santa Fe Springs and fatally hit a 7-year-old-girl Sunday evening.

The incident, which took placed at approximately 7:30 p.m. at 10230 Freeman Avenue, is still under investigation by police. An employee at a neighboring business identified as Kool Aid Hydraulics, a custom car shop that is known to have hydraulic shows. A “hop” was advertised for September 22 by a thread by KoolAid365, who posts promotions for Kool Aid Hydraulics and a company named CBM Hydros on the message board LayItLow.com.

Video of the event depicts classic cars and low-riders enhanced with hydraulics bouncing into the air.

Corporal G. Ponce, of the Whittier Police Department, said investigators have not yet released information on whether the girl’s injuries came during the car show.

“The investigation has not revealed those details yet,” Ponce said. “The investigators are waiting on the coroner’s report to determine the cause, that way they can kind of put that with other pieces of the puzzle to determine exactly what happened.”

There have been no arrests in the incident. One question police are trying to answer is whether permits had been obtained for the event.

“I’m very distraught. I’m very upset,” Patricia Scott—the victim’s great-aunt—said. “This is really, really a shock.”

Authorities Identify 2 Adults and 2 Teens Killed in Lancaster Collision

According to California Highway Patrol officials, a Honda Civic failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a Toyota Tacoma pickup in Lancaster Saturday evening, killing four people, including two teens.

CHP officials said in a release the 1999 Honda Civic was traveling north on 10th Street East approaching Avenue G when it ran through a posted stop sign and broadsided a 1997 Toyota Tacoma.

The driver of the Honda Civic, in addition to two passengers in that car, suffered fatal injuries, as did a passenger in the Toyota Tacoma.

The deceased passenger of the Toyota was identified as Arturo De La Torre, 49, of Lancaster, according to the CHP. The deceased driver of the Honda was identified as Marissa Fritz, 22, of La Mirada.

Officials identified the two deceased teens in the Honda as Brianna Heyrend and Roland Mohan, both 17, according to City News Service. Neither the Los Angeles County Coroner nor the California Highway Patrol would confirm the identities of the minors Sunday morning.

The CHP release said Honda passenger Adrian Ruiz, 20, of La Mirada, also sustained major injuries while Honda passenger5 Steven Heyrend, 19, sustained moderate injuries.

The driver of the 1997 Toyota Tacoma, Erazmo Arroyoala, 34, of Lancaster also sustained moderate injuries, according to CHP officials.

It was not clear whether alcohol or substance abuse had been ruled out as a factor in the collision.

Parents Bring Wrongful Death Case Against Hotel After Daughter is Found Dead in Water Tank

A 21-year-old woman’s body was found in the rooftop water tank of Cecil Hotel in February, and her parents are suing the establishment’s owners.

David and Yinna Lam, parents of British Vancouver resident Elisa Lam, filed the wrongful death suit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The Lams are seeking burial costs for their daughter, in addition to unspecified damages against Cecil Hotel Management Inc.

The suit alleges that Cecil Hotel operators were obligated to make the premises safe for Lam and “inspect and seek out hazards in the hotel that presented an unreasonable risk of danger to (Lam) and other hotel guests.”

The coroner’s office concluded that Lam accidentally drowned.

The last sighting of Lam was Jan. 31 at the hotel, which is downtown near Skid Row. In surveillance video from the hotel elevator, the young woman exhibited bizarre behaviors.

Lam had been on a holiday trip to California and was staying at the Cecil Hotel. Her body was discovered February 19. Authorities had conducted an earlier search of the roof while investigating her disappearance, but they did not open the four cisterns on the roof.

A hotel worker discovered her body after hotel guests complained of low water pressure.

Crash on 10 Freeway in Santa Monica Kills Driver, Injures 2

An intoxicated driver was speeding on the 10 Freeway in Santa Monica when he crashed his car into the guardrail, injuring his two teenage passengers and killing himself, according to authorities.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as 19-year-old Giovanny Soto of Bell.

The accident occurred near the McClure Tunnel at approximately 1:30 a.m. According to authorities, Soto was speeding when he lost control and ran into a guardrail and an embankment wall on the western end of the 10 Freeway.

Police say the car subsequently spun back onto the freeway in the wrong direction and caught fire. The driver was not able to get out of the car.

Soon after, an Audi driving across the westbound lanes struck the Mustang and a Jeep Cherokee that was moving past the collision scene, said CHP Sgt. Elizabeth Van Valkenburgh.

The drivers of the Audi and Jeep Cherokee did not sustain any injuries and declined to be treated.

The two male passengers in the Mustang were able to get out of the car as the Audi and Cherokee crashed into the wreckage. A 19-year-old passenger sustained a cut on his face, and a 16-year-old boy sustained minor cuts to his left hand.

Both were transported to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Fiery Crash on 10 Freeway in City Terrace Injures 1

A collision on the Interstate 10 injured 1 person and caused a vehicle to catch on fire.

The two-vehicle accident was reported to authorities just after 9:25 a.m. and it occurred on the freeway near Soto Street in City Terrace.

Before one of the vehicles became entirely engulfed in flames, an off-duty firefighter pulled the victim out.

According to authorities, the victim sustained critical burns and was taken to a local hospital. Fire officials said the fire captain who saved the victim received first and second degree burns.

According to the California Highway Patrol, All eastbound lanes of the 10 between the Interstate 5 and Soto Street were shut down for more than an hour. All lanes were reopened by 10:55 a.m.

Big Rig Crash on 60 Freeway in Diamondbar Injures 8

A multi-vehicle collision on the Pomona (60) Freeway with a big rig and three other vehicles injured 8 people Wednesday, according to authorities.

The California Highway Patrol was called at approximately 10 a.m. According to reports, the collision occurred on the eastbound 60 Freeway at Grand Avenue in the Diamond Bar area.

After the big rig hit a Caltrans van that was parked on the right shoulder near where the 57 and 60 freeways merge, it came to a stop off the freeway shoulder, according to reports.

It took the Los Angeles County Fire crews about 90 minutes to extricate a driver from the wreckage. The driver was then taken with seven other victims to a local hospital.

Two right lanes on the eastbound 60 Freeway were projected to stay closed until 4 p.m. at the earliest.

The cause of the crash is still unclear.

Teen Fatally Struck Leaving Church in Los Angeles Hit-And-Run

A 16-year-old boy was fatally struck on his way home from church Friday in Los Angeles. His family and friends are grieving his death and calling upon the city to make the crossing safer for the community.

Nathan Mota, 16, was walking across Normandie Avenue and 42nd Place afte3r leaving his youth group meeting at Saint Cecilia Church.

According to his mother, the teen, a voracious reader who attended Verbum Dei private school, was walking the three blocks back to his home in South L.A.

“A lot of the kids walk to school,” said the victim’s mother, Lissette Mota. “People, they do not slow down, they don’t slow down.”

A driver struck the teen in the crosswalk at approximately 8:20 p.m. According to police, the driver did not stop and check on Mota but continued to drive northbound on Normandie. The vehicle was white, possibly a Nissan.

The family said that Saint Cecilia parishioners have been campaigning for years to get a traffic signal or a flashing sign installed at the crosswalk where Mota was hit.

“We have a big church, a big community and a lot of people walk. We like to walk,” said Mota.

“You have kids here who don’t have cars, who are going to be walking to school, who are going to be doing the things that they need to. Mothers who are going to go to the market walking because there is only one car for the family,” said Yaneth Palencia, the victim’s aunt.

Father Jorge Ochoa said he spoke to city officials Friday just hours before the accident happened.

“And we were talking about that issue, and they were willing to do something,” Ochoa said. “But unfortunately something happened last night.”

When asked if she had a message for the driver, Nathan Mota’s mother said, “I forgive you. That’s all I can say.”

A multiple vehicle collision sent two people to the hospital Thursday and left a big rig overturned on a freeway off-ramp in the Westlake District.

The crash took place on the Rampart Boulevard off-ramp from the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway and was reported at 11:43 p.m. Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the big rig and a woman in one of the two cars that were involved in the collision were transported from the scene in ambulance, according to a news photographer who was at the scene.

The off-ramp was closed because of the wreck and a SigAlert was declared a little after midnight, according to the CHP. The CHP reported that the ramp was opened around 4 a.m.

Motorcyclist Fatally Hit in Multi-Vehicle Crash in Griffith Park

A multi-vehicle crash Tuesday left a motorcyclist dead on the westbound Ventura (134) Freeway in the Griffith Park area. The California Highway Patrol reported that the accident caused them to close several freeway lanes.

According to CHP officer Francisco Villalobos, the crash took place in the slow lane of the 134 Freeway just west of the Golden State (5) Freeway and was reported at 6:37 a.m.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

As a result of the crash, the number 2, 3, and 4 lanes of the westbound 134 were shut down, creating a huge traffic backup and generating a SigAlert declaration at 7 a.m., Villalobos said. All lanes were reopened around 10:15 a.m.

Suspected Drunk Driver Crashes into Woodland Hills Drycleaners

A driver, suspected to be drunk, struck a Woodland Hills dry cleaning business on Thursday morning but sustained no serious injuries.

The crash occurred at approximately 1 a.m. in Ventura Boulevard’s 19900 block, around two blocks east of Winnetka Avenue, according to Sgt. John Willingham of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.

He said the car was severely damaged, and noted that the engine was separated from the rest of the vehicle on impact. The building also sustained significant drama.

A news photographer at the scene confirmed that the driver was a woman, and Willingham said she sustained only contusions and abrasions and was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
