What is truth and who speaks the truth? In her exhibition at Bonniers Konsthall, Dora Garcia explores the concept of truth; through film, drawings, text and performance. Today, when the division between true and false appears increasingly dissolved and when the occurrence of ‘fake news’ makes it hard to assess the veracity of statements, Dora Garcia’s exhibition could be an important space for dialogue.

The Prophets on 10/2, self-fulfilling the following prophecy: 

The Prophets will recruit some members of the audience to play with them the following dialogue. Once all lines have been performed, new actors are recruited among the audience, and the dialogue is performed again. This is the dialogue:

Prophet 1 starts the dialogue and says: “This is worse than Watergate in the sense that the system worked in Watergate and it’s not apparent yet that the system is working in the current situation. No president has done anything like Trump to characterise the American press and its exercise of the first amendment as the enemy of the people, a phrase associated with the greatest despots of the 20th century.”

Prophet 2 says: Panetta said of Woodward and Bernstein: “Their basic expertise was in trying to find the truth but we’re in a time when facts are under attack. They’re dealing with a more challenging world where the mere fact of who they are doesn’t carry the kind of respect it once did.”

Member of the audience, playing Bernstein, says: “I think this is maybe the darkest, most dangerous moment in our history in a long time.”

Member of the audience, playing Robert Redford, says: “This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Watergate scandal. Because of my role in the film, some have asked me about the similarities between our situations in 1972 and 2017. There are many. The biggest one is the importance of a free and independent media in defending our democracy. If we have another Watergate, will we navigate it as well? In a statement in May 1973, John Dean famously said: ‘The truth always emerges.’ I’m concerned about its chances these days.”

The Prophets on 9/2, self-fulfilling the following prophecy: Who of the two Prophets will be Dr Jekyll and who of the two Prophets will be Mr Hyde? The Prophets will ask this question to the visitors of Bonniers Konsthall, and while those visitors look at them trying to identify good and evil, one of The Prophets will do her best to incarnate evil, and the other Prophet will do her best to embody good.

Hello, I was at the exhibition in Stockholm and wanted to share my impressions. While I was reading the different papers on the wall, I had the feeling that things that were told there, could happen actually at the moment. But they didn’t happen exactly. I thought it could have been a great idea to go a step forward and include things in the papers that would happen during the exhibition. Things quite more clear for the audience. Like in a proper script. The only problem would be how to make people read the papers. They were a lot and I think I was the only person reading them all. Maybe through videos on the walls, recordings, short texts, lines by the actors, etc. I attach a photo I made and a video. You can credit me just by my name: Ana. No the email.
