I think everyone should be disturbed by the censorship and control happening on the major platforms like twitter and facebook, regardless of your political views

True, but we can’t forget that those are ultimately private companies that are free to do what they wish with their platforms. I think the real concern is twofold: that we as citizens have come to rely on them as news sources, and that we view them as essential political platforms and public spaces when they really aren’t those things.

Private companies should never have had this much power in the first place, but unless we want them turned into government-owned platforms I don’t think it’s possible to enforce the first amendment here.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to defend these companies: they have way too much political power. They are monopolies that shouldn’t exist. But I think treating them as if they are in the public domain and therefore subject to the same laws as government bodies gives them the power they want. They aren’t the government- not yet. I don’t want to give them even more influence by acting like they are.

On a side note, I think this country has as big a problem with monopolies today as it did in the early 20th century, and the US is long overdue for another round of stomping them out, especially in online spaces. I would love to see it happen, but tbh i don’t think it will.

I had a similar opinion until i just recently learned that legally a private publishing company and a free public platform are two different things, the protections, the liberties, responsibilities, etc. are different.

the issue people are having with twitter/youtube/facebook is that they play both sides whenever it benefits them. they claim that they’re just a public platform and that they’re not responsible for the content of their sites in order to allow certain voices to be heard, and then censor others under the guise of their “community guidelines” which are changed at whim and applied haphazardly, to further their own agendas.

If they were upfront and legally documented as being a private publishing company, then i would have no issue with them moderating and curating their space. but they’re registered as a public platform, and enjoy the freedoms and liberties therein. And so, barring anything illegal, they should not be censoring people the way they are. and they definitely shouldn’t be able to skip over the line and back again whenever they feel like it.

i definitely agree with you though, that they function as monopolies and that america has a problem with private monopolies. i also agree and think it’s important that they aren’t government owned and that those spaces exist outside of government
