I pull out my flashlight, shinning it in her eyes.  They respond to the stimulus which is a good sign.  “Nicole, you where in a horrible accident, but we’re going to take good care of you” I tell her, even though she’s unconscious.  “My name’s Derek and I’ve got a whole group of people helping you stay alive.” “Where’s that CT?” I shout, turning around.

“Here it is!” I hear an intern shout from behind me as she rushes into the room. She shoves the scans in Derek’s hands meanwhile I’m shouting out orders to everyone else in the room. I see Nicole start to panic and I run over to her side taking her uninjured hand into mine. I look her into the eyes, “Nicole, you’re going to be just fine. You’re in really good hands. Dr. Shepherd–Derek, he’s the best around. We’re going to get you through this.” When she slowly closes her eyes, I think she’s finally relaxing but when my ears fill up with the sounds of the machines I know that’s not true. I call out, “We’re losing her!”

I look at the CT and mumble “Crap” “We need to get her to an…” she’s starts to code.  “Paddles! She in full cardiac arrest Charge to 300!” I shout.  “Clear!” I shock her but nothing happens.  “Charging to 350! Clear!” I call again before shocking her.  Slowing her heart rate begins to stabilize.  “We heading to the OR, NOW!” I say. “Before she arrests again, we need to get this bleed!”

He gets her heart beating again and the panic in my chest subsides just a tad. Everyone is running around the room trying to get her ready to move, "Call the OR and let them know we're on the way!" Once she's prepped enough, we go ahead and start moving her, "Let's go! Go, go, go!" Out in the hallway I'm yelling as we run through the halls, "Out the way! Move people! Someone run ahead and get the elevator!" We get to the elevator with perfect timing and I yell noticing it get a little crowded, "Those who don't fit take the stairs!"

It was a quiet day so far at Seattle Grace Mercy West and that could only mean one thing… All Hell is about to break loose. My pager going off a few minutes later can only mean one thing… the ER. I look down confirming it before running down to the ER. The nurses point me in the direction of the ambulance bay. I get dressed up in a gown and gloves but running out to join the others, “What’s going on?”

I’ve just finished surgery when my pager goes off for a multiple vehicle collision with confirmed serious injuries.  I’m still wiping my hands as I rush down the hallway.  There’s a small group of doctors already waiting outside in the ambulance bay when I arrive and I rush over to Mer, putting a calming hand on her shoulder.  “Someone must have said the q word” I say, nodding as the siren sounds in the distance increase.

“Multiple vehicle collision; heard there are six ambulances coming in,” a resident says in response. I nod to her as I finally get tied up and gloved. Derek walks up on a few seconds after. He mentions the ‘q’ word and I shake my head, “I was just thinking the same thing.” I give him a quick kiss as the ambulances start to drive in. Everyone’s quick on their feet. I run up to an ambulance and it opens up to a patient with apparent head injury, “Dr. Shepherd, could use your help over here.”

Mer kisses me, and I embrace her as long as I can before the first ambulance arrives.  It’s too quick.  The chaos ensues rapidly and we have to keep our heads on straight.  I begin to listen as the paramedics call out what they have.  I rush over to the one that Mer has approached.  “Take her to trauma 3 now.  We need an MRI and head CT stat” I tell the intern. “Let’s roll!”

I can't say that the ER is an amazing place but I can say that's where the best cases are. Cristina and I used to troll the ER back when we were interns just hoping for something good to come in. Of course, she'd always get the better cases... It's still hard to not get sad every time I think about her. Maybe when I get off work today, I'll pay a visit to Chloe and see how Arizona and Owen are holding up.

Running down the hallway and into trauma 3, we get ready to transfer her into the bed. "On my count," I shout, "1 - 2 - 3!" As soon as she gets in bed, the nurses get her hooked up to all the machines as a chart is slammed into my hands, "Nicole Harding. 19. Unconscious on the scene." I pause reading this next line, "She went through the windshield, Derek. They found her lying on the side of the road." I know if anyone can help this girl, it's Derek. Let's just hope we aren't too late.

“Rr-rose,” she barely gets out and I nod. I smile softly at her, “Rose, you’re safe. We’re going to take care of you. Do you know what happened to you?” She shakes her head ‘no’ and silently starts to cry, “I was on the way to my father’s flower shop.”

I look over at Dr. Wilder and it’s like we have the same thought: her father is probably waiting on her. “I’ll go get those scans and try to find her parents. You okay in here?” I ask before I go.

Pete listened to her as she told them what her name was. He watched as Meredith asked her if she knew what happened. Hearing her, he sighed. He would be wondering where she was.

Pete looked at Meredith and knew she had thought the same thing. Hearing her, he nodded. “Go ahead. I will be fine here.” Pete told her. He looked back at Rose. “You will be fine.”

I run to the nearest nurses' station first. I run up to the receptionist, "I need you to look up all the nearby locally owned flower shops... Could you get me a list by the time I come back down?"

She nods as I run up to CT. I rush her scans and they're back to me in five minutes which is pretty surprising. I run back downstairs to the nurses' station and the receptionist only has two names for me. I nod thanking her then I run back into the room. I smile seeing Rose still awake. I hand Dr. Wilder the scans then make my way over to her bedside, "Hey Rose, could you tell me your father's name?"

I sigh and shake my head. “I know I want Owen’s name to be in there. We’re going between a few that we like. Haven’t settled on one though.”

“Picking out names is always the hardest part,” I smile taking another bite out of my burger. “We didn’t pick out Drew’s name. It just came to me the moment I first saw him.”

“I do believe that’s what it’s going to come to for us.” I nod. “Waiting until we meet him.”

“Yeah, that’s a good way to go,” I smile picking up another fry, dipping it into ketchup and shoving it in my mouth. I take the last bite of my burger, “Mhmm, that was good.”

They get her transferred over to a bed then the nurses start hooking her up to machines. Dr. Wilder called her over to help him stabilize the wound. Seeing how bad this girl looks, I wonder what the tree looks like.

We get her some what stabilized and her vitals seem good. It doesn’t look like it’s a surgical case but we won’t know for sure until we get the scans back. The girl starts to stir and I lean down closer to her, “You’ve been in an accident and you’re at the hospital. Can you tell me your name?”

Pete has been worried about the patient. She did look pretty bad, but as they treated her, it seemed like she was going to be okay. They still had to wait for the scans but for now, she seemed okay.

He noticed the girl starting to wake up and was about to talk to her when Meredith did. He let Meredith do that. As he carried on treating the wounds that she had, he listened to what Meredith was saying and what the patient was saying too.

I half chuckle when she mentions tequila, before pushing back and pointing to my very pregnant belly. “That isn’t an option for me at the moment.”

“I’m so glad I’m done with breastfeeding,” I shrug off finally picking up my burger again. I don’t want to think about Cristina or anything to do with her… It just makes me sad. Let’s talk about babies instead, “Aren’t you due in like a few weeks?”

“Yep.” I pick up a french fry. “Just a bit longer, and he’s here.” I nod. “Did you get your invitation, the rather informal email one? About the babyshower?” I ask. “With everything going on…we forgot the invites.”

"Hey, it's okay. I get it. My invites were word of mouth... sort of like playing telephone," I joke as I stuff some fries into my burger. "Have you guys settled on a name yet?"

“Female, 22, car versus tree,” the paramedic announces as they wheel her down of the ambulance. It looks like it could be surgical. “Couldn’t find any ID; must’ve lost it at the scene,” they finish as we all gather around to push the gurney down the hallway. I call out, “We need a trauma room!”

“Trauma 2 is open,” someone calls out in response and we make our to the room. I forgot how fast paced things are in the ER and I move faster trying not to fall behind. “Doctor, where do you need me?” I ask out of respect that he got to her first. It’s his patient.

Pete listened to what the paramedic is telling them. He frowned as he listened. He knew that her parents were probably out there and had no idea what had happened to their daughter. He pushed the gurney in. 

Once they were on the trauma room, he looked at Meredith. He knew what she was doing. “Help me out over here.” Pete said, knowing that he needed all the help he could. This wasn’t just his patient. It was their patient.

It’s always nice catching up with a friend but now lunch time is over and unfortunately for me, I don’t have any patients. I decide there’s no better place to troll for patient’s other than the ER so I make my way there. For a normal day, the ER doesn’t seem too hectic. I make my way over to the Nurses’ station and smile at the ER receptionist, “Anything good in?”

“We got something coming into the ambulance bay right now,” she responds as I hear the sounds of an ambulance approaching. I grab a gown and gloves running through the ER to the ambulance bay but it seems like another doctor bet me to it, “What do you got?”

Pete had spoke to soon. He had been in the ER since his shift started and it hadn’t been that busy. He was used to this place being pretty busy. Pete was just checking on some of his patients when he heard that there was something coming in.

He grabbed a gown and and put it on before pulling the gloves on. He looked at Meredith as she rushed over. “I’m not sure. I have only just got here myself.” He told Meredith. He looked  over as the ambulance door opened and the paramedics got the patient out.

“She’s… she’s okay. She still seems to be having night terrors, and can be a little clingy. But, its fine… you know. I want to keep her safe. I want to keep her and Owen both, safe. Moreso from now on. You know?” I say. I take a bite of my sandwich. “I feel like if Cristina were still here, she’d be so pissed at me for letting that happen to them.” I frown.

I nod along as I listen to her speak. It makes my stomach hurt a little bit when she mentions the fact that Chloe is having some problems still. I play with my fries in my ketchup as she continues to speak. I chuckle sadly when she mentions Cristina then I let out a breath of air I didn’t realize I was holding in, “You stole the words right out of my mouth,” I say stirring the fries around again thinking about what she told me on her death bed, “I just feel so guilty. She told me to take care of them…”

“She told me the same. Finally made peace with me right before…” i trail off and look up at Mer. “But then made me promise that if I really was going to build a life with him, that I’d take care of them both.” I take a sip of my drink, and sigh. “Owen and I have talked a little about therapy. We both know it works. We’ve both been through it at different times, so… maybe that’s an avenue we can take.”

She died... I finish for her in my head. Cristina is still a tough subject for me... I know it was three years ago but it still hurts... a lot. I lost my person... when I lost her, I felt like I lost a part of myself. Nothing has been the same since then... I haven’t been the same. There’s so much of me that has changed and honestly, I still don’t know if it were for the better. I finally look up to her when she starts talking about therapy. I nod, “Honestly, I rather drown my sorrows in Tequila... but therapy sounds like it could be good for you guys.”
