I mostly donāt think you have much choice in the matter when it happens⦠But also ditto.
Members of Congress are living off food stamps for a week to protest Republican cuts.Ā Itās a challenge for them, but GOP cuts would hurt millions of everyday Americans.Ā
Why does this not have more publicity. This needs it!
I want a reality tv show where politicians have to live in poverty for a month. They have to live in Government housing, shop with food stamps, and get only a limited amount of money for clothes. Because here, they still have all their trappings, lilke nice cars and thousand dollar suits. I want them in Walmart jeans trying to determine if they can afford a carton of milk.Ā
Give them a full calendar year. I want to see them confident in January, and sometime around JuneĀ choking back tearsĀ at the Safeway because they are tired, so tired, of eating 25 cent cup noodles, eyeing other peoplesā full grocery carts with a dull bewilderment. Let me see them despair because they have a persistent nagging cough that wonāt go away and might be turning into pneumonia but the minute clinic is $60, which might as well be as six million dollars, either way they aināt got it to spare - and that doesnāt count the cost of prescriptions. Let me hear them tell people about the muscle cramps they get at night due to eating non-nutritious garbage for months, the weakness from persistent hunger.Ā Let them know the shame and frustration of only owning one pair of cheap polyester pants for work and one pair of thrift-store jeans, and both persistently have ripped crotches and seams coming undone, no matter how many times they get sewn back up. Let the women know the particular sort of despair that comes once a month when you canāt afford even the cheapest pads or tampons. Let them understand the frustration of being charged a $35 fee for a $2 overdraft. Let them watch as the bank holds charges from different days in āpendingā till they all come through on the same day, and the bank charges them four times for a single overdraft because āthe charges all cleared at the same timeā.Ā I want them to know the particular pain of having to decide between food for the week, or transportation costs to and from work. You canāt have both. Choose wisely. You do not truly understand poverty until youāve lived it and a month isnāt enough to encompass it. Not even close.
Thatās why I have so much respect for my dad.
Heās a state legislator.
He grew up so poor, he remembers growing 6 inches one summer and his shoes and pants not fitting for the entire school year. He grew up in the middle of no where and I mean like 3 hours from a town with a grocery store no where. He remembers eating small animals because thatās all they had. He remembers the exact moment he decided he wanted to be a lawyer, because āthey could eat dinner.ā At 8 years old.
He went to college, (at the point where a pt job could pay for school.) and then to law school.
He worked as a lawyer for 30 years. Then decided to take the over 75% pay cut to become a state legislator. He currently makes $22,260 in his position as a legislator.
I know it sounds like I donāt know what Iām talking about when I say this but your vote puts these people there. Running for office is spendy, but you donating your time, if you have the means, can make a huge difference! Vote their asses out. If they donāt engage with the community they are meant to represent, INCLUDING the poor, they donāt deserve to be there.
I know my dad is one of the good ones, but if we, the masses demand accountability, and vote out those who donāt help us we would have mote folks like him, who just want to represent their people, and fight for them on the floor.

I feel I should point out that the penultimate stork is being slandered. That duck was uneaten; the stork was just moving it out of the way, and promptly dropped it.Ā https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1225223/Dont-forget-duck-Giant-Shoebill-picks-feathered-friend-blocks-path.html
