Sure! I wasn’t expecting this to get traction so I didn’t go into detail.

‘Ghostwriter sweatshop’ isn’t a perfect term - I believe the term typically used is co-writers, although I’m not sure that’s fair either. What happens is that Patterson gives writers an outline and a plot, and they write the books. He’ll read and sometimes revise what they produce. Here’s one of several articles on it. Some people have used text analysis tools to confirm that his books tend to read far more like the co-writers than him - ‘author’ may not be the best word for his role. He’s more like the director. 

That being said, many librarians don’t resent him for that. We resent him because, if you work in a public library, he has probably taken over an entire library shelf by now, maybe two. Shelf space is valuable, but when it’s a bestseller you have to buy copies, even if there’s better stuff you could be purchasing.

I work in a library and literally we all dislike Patterson to varying degrees.

Just the other day I was shifting all the books (because we had just weeded) and I was desperately trying to fit the Pattersons on the shelves and there were no patrons in the library so I yelled “PATTERSON NEEDS TO STOP WRITING ALREADY” and my coworker—not missing a beat or even looking up from what she’s doing—just deadpans back, “He already did.”

So yeah librarians and library employees generally tend to hate Patterson.

The other issue for librarians (mlis librarian here with 5 years in public libraries) is that people come to us and ask "Can you give me the newest James Patterson book?" And they want one specific book but don't really know the series name (in their defense, series names are hard and I mess them up a lot) and defo don't know the plot. They saw it somewhere, maybe the newspaper? And the problem is. That bc of the ghostwriting and everything. He has usually published several books recently and it's a guessing game to find the right one.

Plane toilets are also gender neutral. I never thought about it until I went in after a bloke.

it’s not the most efficient design, but a lot of people also like being able to have the option to use a private bathroom rather than having to share with other people.

There’s a gender neutral bathroom on my campus that’s just like a normal public restroom. It has two stalls in it. People go in there all the time. Trans folks, people just using the restroom, mixed groups of friends that don’t wanna stop chatting just because their pal got ink all over her hands and has to wash. I’ve been in line in there with a cis looking woman and two cis looking guys at the same time and none of us started any fights or peeked under the stalls. No fires started. The world didn’t end. It never does. People always just do their business, wash their hands, use those stupid hand dryers, and then leave. It’s that restroom that eliminated any thoughts I had about gender neutral restrooms being a bad idea. It’s just a normal restroom. The stalls still mostly hide everything. The only difference is that now you might be washing your hands next to someone of a different gender and if you pee standing up you gotta follow two extra steps (opening the door to the stall and lifting the lid). And that’s it.

There’s absolutely a place for single person restrooms but not all gender neutral restrooms are gonna be like that. And in practice the more public ones really are not a big deal.

I went to a festival that basically rented an entire campground, and since it was queer inclusive they redicated all of the bathrooms as gender neutral.   It was very interesting because I was having a conversation with my girlfriend, and we just both went in, took our separate stalls, and continued the conversation, and it wasn’t till after it was done that anything seemed odd about it– and mostly it was that it wasn’t odd, just not the Standard Experience.

I remember a mental health clinic I had therapy at when I was a kid that had exclusively gender neutral bathrooms.  There were toilets in stalls, and urinals also in stalls.  It struck me as very sensible at the time, and it still does.

I have to laugh at the folks in the notes claiming this is fake because “no 2-yr old is that advanced”. My guys, I work at a daycare almost exclusively with 2-3 year olds and let me tell you some of the wild shit I heard this last week alone,

“Uhhh, i ASSUME we’re going to the playground soon??” -2.5 year old girl

“[3 year old boy] pushed me because he doesn’t have a manners.” -2 yr old girl

“Did you spill your water?” “No no no no it’s not a concern” -2 yr old boy (while running away, dripping wet)

All this, and also, they can tell you lots about their favorite things. My 2 year old nephew can tell you all about Star Wars (the 8 movies he’s seen at least) and loves going out of his way to bring up how Anakin was good and bad and good again when he died. Trust me, little kids learn and mimic and reenact all the things they get attached to. Also, he named his first fish Jengo Fett, and all following fish Boba Fett, so juries still out on how much he understands clones.

Kids pick up the language that’s used around and to them. Mannerisms too. They are tiny, efficient mimics and it will come out at the WEIRDEST times. Young kids will ABSOLUTELY say all the stuff listed here.

I love when kids say stuff that's obviously what their parents say. Like "no no no it's not a concern" that's what a parent says while cleaning up a mess. So the kid learns that's what you say. "he doesn't have manners" is such a perfect example of a parent teaching "we don't push people because we have manners" child psychology and how their brains develop is fascinating. I knew a good bit from college (psych major) but my best friend just had a baby and another has a 3 year old nephew and holy shit. Seeing these little ones grow is incredible.

people on tumblr tend to be pretty good about the whole “you should pay artists thing” but i just want to put out there: that includes fibre artists

i can’t count the number of times i’ve been knitting or embroidering something and someone is like “oh can you make me one?” and then they get offended when i tell them they’d have to pay me.

real talk: nice yarn/wool is expensive. sewing machines are expensive. for every handmade skirt or stuffed animal you see online there are at least a half-dozen prototypes in the creator’s closet that can’t be sold.

and that’s not even getting into the time spent on these projects. i have some things i’ve probably spent in excess of 100 hours on. i can’t even fathom making a living wage knitting stuff, because nobody would ever pay that much.

tl:dr; fibre artists deserve to be paid for their time and skill just like visual artists and if you can “buy something just like that at walmart for $5″ please just do that and stop wasting our time
