I just wanna thank god for giving me a top and a bottom lip. I know others aren’t so fortunate.
Facts
Y'all gotta watch what you say to kids and in front of kids. I was working with some young black kids today and one of the girls asked me why I had my hair natural. I told her I’m just taking a break from weaves and braids and all that and she said oh girl no we too dark to have our nappy hair out like that. She was 9. She said she doesn’t leave her house without it flat ironed because people will think she’s broke and ugly. This is also the same girl that last summer told me that we needed to go inside out of the sun because boys don’t like girls with dark skin. Little kids don’t come up with this stuff themselves, they hear their parents or other people talk about things and internalize the self hate or will tell these hurtful untrue things to their darker peers.
My heart hurts yo
Over the past week, we at The Root have added hashtags to various incidents of racial bias that have crossed our radars. There was #MovingInWhileBlack, #BlackWhileAirBnBing and #CouponingWhileBlack. #DiningWhileBlack, frankly, has too many examples for us to enumerate, and just today, we ran a story about a couple being denied a money order—with cash in hand—while black.
Who the fuck calls the police on someone for napping anywhere on a college campus??? (I know, white people) People sleep in all sorts of places on campus.
So when will all these calls start turning into fines and charges for false reports
Never, because they can always claim reasonable suspicion, given that racial profiling has basically been held up by all levels of the government except that one judge in NYC :/
This is terrorism, concerted efforts to make PoC unwelcome and unsafe should they dare set foot somewhere white people have claimed as their’s alone. Expect to see much more copycatting.
I’m furious, because college students sleeping in public spaces (chairs, benches, floor leaning against wall, empty classrooms desks, etc) is a literal social norm on campus from all boards of higher learning.
It’s extremely common and most college students can’t go an entire day without seeing someone napping on campus.
I HIGHLY doubt this was a misunderstanding. I truly believe it was a purposeful act of racist aggression.
They weaponize calls to the police! It is an act of aggression, and power.

when we stop pretending that cis het black men are the only gender in the black community who uphold homophobia, transphobia, and strict gender norms....
*stares directly at cis het black women*
Azzedine Alaïa Fall/Winter 1992
transphobia in the black community doesn’t stop with low life niggas on twitter, obviously. like black cis women are fucking ruthless to trans women, perhaps even more and honestly, this is something we need to discuss and take seriously cause we are not going to sit up here and talk about “black lives matter” then within the next minute, call a trans woman an “it” and make her the butt of every disgusting joke there is.
“In order to address the role we play in violence against Black trans women, we cannot be silent or idle. We have to accept our privilege and disassemble society’s gender expectations to ensure their safety and humanity. We have to understand that as Black cis women, we are closer to the gender conformity spectrum than our Black trans sisters. We are at a far higher advantage because of our accessibility to womanhood. When we stay silent, we are seemingly accepting that the navigation of our gender comes at the expense of our Black trans sisters. Our complicity becomes violence in itself.”
