I wish I could activate an EMP to temporarily disrupt everyone I know on social media so they can take a moment to reflect on the way they fight for their causes. We all have grenade launchers for our opinions and if I read through the posts it’s like I am being shot at and there’s no one left who is safe. When you (anyone) hate the other side so much that you have made an enemy of them (anyone) beyond any way of reconciling, this picking of sides is a destructive tool to get others to rally to your side. It’s seeking approval because we so deeply want others to approve of us, even if it’s going to make the others feel pushed away. We are all desperately seeking this closeness with anybody (anybody=whoever “thinks like us”). This isn’t real connection, this isn’t vulnerability. You aren’t making lasting, meaningful friendships. This is a cheap substitute, a pure survival stunt out of desperation to have that faux belonging and approval. We have reduced lines of communication to attention seeking and just saying the thing that makes the “other” the most provoked in order to make the group we have chosen to be apart of to feel validated and smarter. This is such a widespread epidemic that at times I’ve felt like I am laying on the ground with the wind knocked out of me, but I need to get up because I have to say something to help with all the chaos but I just can’t breathe. I’ve felt so helpless. I wish I could activate an EMP to help everyone stop and think before we post something with the spirit of “us vs them” on social media.
