Sketchbook: a year in Jerusalem

Herodium: The Palace and Tomb of King Herod
Located 12 km south of Jerusalem, in the Judean desert, Herodium looks like an extinct volcano, but it really is a fort built by King Herod the Great between 23 and 15 BC.

Efforts to take āseveral months'; providing emergency aid is āthe most effective kind of diplomacy,ā Liberman says
We can all do something to support Israel..
Even if it is just daring to speak the truth when a friend or colleague says something about Israel that you know isnāt true, or buying an Israeli product or fruit at your local supermarket.
If we all do SOMETHING, even in some small way, it will make a BIG difference!
World's oldest complete example of 10 Commandments on rare display in Israel
JERUSALEM (AFP).- The oldest complete example of the Ten Commandments has gone on rare display in Jerusalem, part of the Israel Museumās collection of the Dead Sea scrolls, an official said Wednesday.
Written in Hebrew more than 2,000 years ago, it is one of 870 scrolls discovered between 1947 and 1956 in the Qumran caves above the Dead Sea.
āItās not usually exhibited⦠because itās very sensitive and fragile,ā a museum official told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that it was being displayed in a climate-controlled glass case.
When not on show, the scrolls are kept in a dark, climate-controlled storeroom in conditions similar to those in the Qumran caves, where the humidity, temperature and darkness preserved them for two millennia. Read more.
Veterans march through Jerusalem to mark WWII Victory in Europe Day
Scores of elderly veterans living in Israel marched on Sunday through Jerusalemās city center in full military uniform to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, drawing cheers and amazed looks from onlookers. The men, who had fought for various European armies during the war, were smiling and waving as they walked the sunny streets of Jerusalem. āItās very important that people remember this day. Itās very important that people come here, even 10 years from now when not all these veterans will be with us. Itās very important that this thing continues as a habit to come and celebrate this day,"Ā said Netali Palalo, the grandchild of a veteran who passed away. Israel usually observes the Nazi defeat on May 8, Victory in Europe day, as do most European countries.
Today is apparently Eat What You Want Day (no complaints here!). May we suggest: Date cake with mandarin orange glaze

The picture of IDF planes over the Birkenau gates says it all. This image summarizes the great change that has occurred in our nationās history, from a helpless people at the mercy of our enemies to a people capable of defending itself

We are the shoes, we are the last witness. We are shoes from grandchildren and grandfathers. From Prague, Paris, Amsterdam, and because we are only made of fabric and leather. And not of blood and flesh, each of us avoided the hellfire.
