ian moved to elias, california ( originating from new mushroomton, oregon ) with his older brother barley in february 2021 in search of the phoenix gem, a stone that holds the ability to bring back the lightfoot boys’ late father for one day. the catch is that they only have a certain amount of time to find the gem and complete the spell, and time is ticking fast. 

in the midst of ian and barley’s search, filled with months of dead ends and unanswered question, hades literally unleashed monsters onto the city of elias and ian was a beat down pretty badly during that mess ( we did this sort of dnd style and i kept rolling twos ... you do the math, friends ). this was an event that was a key marker in priority shifts. you start to think of things a little differently when you almost die. 

in the months following, barley settled into california life way more easily than ian did. the younger lightfoot recognized that easily as he struggled to 1) learn about his abilities and potential as a wizard, 2) continued to come up answerless when it came to the ticking time bomb that was the phoenix gem and .... potentially meeting the sprit of his dad, and 3) dealt with the aftermath of moving to a new state and almost immediately getting brutally attacked by a monster. ( there’s no one to blame here, just how the cards were dealt - but the disparity is probably what lead to the following events. )

ian was getting restless as they stayed too long in one spot, convinced that there was no way the gem was in elias if they hadn’t found it yet, but had gotten to the point where he felt bad asking barley to leave. ian had never seen his older brother so happy - he had found a place here with friends and a girlfriend - but they were on a time crunch and still on a mission, so ian made the decision to leave without his brother with the idea that barley could stay in his happy bubble in elias and ian would return once he found the gem. 

barley did not see ian’s departure the same way. this is something they’ve yet to hash out. 

present ;

ian’s been staying in new mushroomton for a few months with his mom and got a job at mantercorn tavern in attempt to find out more about the phoenix gem. when ian and barley first found out about the spell that would bring back their dad, they visited the tavern and ian always thought that there was some information being hidden there. 

he was right, because  - while he was originally mistaken by thinking the phoenix gem wasn’t in elias - he managed to find a map of the city that would point him directly to the mouse estate. the mayor was in possession of the phoenix gem the whole time.

in an intricate heist that probably took longer than it should have, after convincing his boss to let him train the staff at the new elias location of the bar, ian stole the map and is currently on a side quest to give it to barley. operation: get the phoenix gem is back in action. 

important: ian is currently working in elias on the weekends and new mushroomton on the weekdays to train staff in elias and still cover his shifts at home. he is currently only in elias friday afternoon through monday morning and goes home the rest of the week.

ian’s decision to enroll in university was abrupt and impulsive, the idea being that it would easily kill two birds with one stone. finding himself in elias on a more permanent basis meant he needed a more permanent residence and howl being MIA meant he couldn’t go back to his old training schedule - so school seemed to tick both of those boxes. he could learn a little bit about practical conjuration and he didn’t have to beg barley to move back in and disrupting his current situation again. 

after all, he was hyper aware of just how often he asked barley to change things on his behalf.

he had made the drive to new mushroomton and back with a carload of his things, finally accepting his commute and hotel stays as a thing of the past upon accepting the manager position at work. he pulled up the email with his dorm assignment on his phone, balanced his duffle bag atop his rolling suitcase, and made his way to the second floor. 

once he reached room 212, he knocked twice ( mainly for courtesy ) before opening the door, knowing he would have a roommate who may or may not be behind the door. what he hadn’t expected, however, was for his side of the room to be filled with his roommate’s things. in fact, he almost couldn’t tell what side of the room was meant to be his. 

“ uh, hi, ” he said nervously as he looked to the guy sitting at one of the desks. “ are you nick? i’m ian and, um. i think we’re roommates. ”

Vanellope managed a grin, ripping the end of the straw wrapper and plunging it into her cup.

“My glitch is getting bad again,” they finally explained, fighting back tears. Two years ago, Vanellope’s glitch was volatile, incredibly unpredictable, sending them crashing to the floor as they simply stopped existing for a moment. Slowly, they’d gotten control of it, shoving it deep down inside herself as Vanellope adapted to the real world.

ian offered an understanding nod. the glitch was getting bad again. he didn’t know too much about it, but he remembered seeing it the last time it had gotten bad. he took a seat next to his friend and tried to think of something reassuring to say, but he couldn’t imagine how scared they were. 

“ were you driving ? ” he asked softly, unsure if he actually wanted the answer. clearly they were okay, but ... he shook his head, waving off the question. that was too scary to think about.

it wasn’t the first time someone’s made a dig at ian’s age - it wasn’t even the first time it was done at this bar - so his laugh was genuine as he pulled a straw out of the front of his apron and dropped it on the table, rebuttal at the ready. “ i’m twenty three ... and the manager. so what can i get you ? ”

“ hey, i don’t want you to leave on my account, ” ian said quickly, hoping he wasn’t overstepping in his offer. grabbing a glass from behind the bar, he filled it with ice and cranberry juice before walking it to her and setting it down. there was every indication that meg wasn’t looking for company right now, but in a strike of boldness he slide in the booth across from her anyway. “ lighter topics, then, ” he insisted with a nod. “ what’s your favorite movie that’s come out in the past six months ? ”

ian offered a small smile and a nod of understanding as he reached under the bar to grab a new glass. the tavern was quiet for now - had been all night, to some degree - so spending his break with a little conversation almost sounded ... nice ? what a strange phenomenon. 

“ oh, i mean - don’t worry about it ! i wouldn’t offer if i minded. ” he filled the glass with cherry cola, per their request, and grabbed a water bottle for himself before rounding the bar and sitting down across from them. “ here, ” he said as he set down the glass and pulled a straw out of his apron pocket. “ now what’s going on ? ”

Logan was doing his best to stick to the walls of the ballroom. He had no idea why he’d actually come other than he didn’t want to be home and well, maybe he wanted to be away from the darker parts of his life for a night. It’s how he bumped into Ian, one of the very few people he tolerated. He smiled as he took a treat off the guy’s plate. “Ian. Didn’t think you’d come to this.”

this wasn’t exactly ian’s scene. he was glad that he came, sure - but it was hard to ignore that he felt out of place. everyone was dressed up in ways he couldn’t pull off on such short notice and had dates to match. running into logan as he was coming back from the kitchens, ian couldn’t help but laugh when he called him out on it right away. his friend’s all seemed to know him well.

“ what’s up, buddy ? ” he asked in friendly greeting as he pat logan’s shoulder with his free hand. “ i, uh, wasn’t supposed to. my coworker convinced me to close the tavern so we could all come ... that’ll be a fun conversation tomorrow. ” it was only then that he processed exactly what he had done as his first order of manager business, making him cringe. “ anyway - how’ve you been ? ”

ian was on the hunt for something to eat when he spotted meg lingering by an otherwise empty table, drink in hand. his brain automatically recognized the situation as a potential quiet pocket in such a large and boisterous room, leading him to weave his way through the crowd to reach her.

“ how do you feel about some company ? ” he asked with a small smile as pulled out a chair, sighing a little as he sat down. there were times when events like this were a little overwhelming for ian, but there was something about sitting at a quiet table in an otherwise busy environment that made him feel separate enough from the festivities to calm down. he’d have to thank her (or apologize - god, was he intruding ?) for the opportunity. “ i, uh -  just need a minute ... do you know where they’re serving food ? ”

it didn’t take much convincing  for the owner of mantercorn tavern to let the entire staff have the night off, considering everyone who had ever stepped foot in elias seemed to be at this ball tonight. a couple dead hours into his shift this morning and he made a couple calls, relieving everyone of their duties for the day. he spotted april in the distance and made a note to say hello to her later. 

for now he was off to find something to drink, thankful he wouldn’t have to make it himself. he was glad to see ariel too once he reached the bar, knowing how excited she was for the ball and how working tonight was originally going to cut into her time here. “ hey, you made it ! ” he said with a smile. “ are you having fun ? ”

🚐 ⠀  ⠀ ⠀  ⠀ ───────────       after   his   first   encounter   barley   followed   the   directions   to   where   he   was   to   meet   his   second   partner   pairing   of   the   evening.   honestly,   the   idea   was   cool   to   barley.   he   really   didn’t   have   any   bad   blood   with   anyone   in   town   so   he   felt   he   could   be   paired   with   anyone   and   have   a   nice   time.   he   felt   he   might   have   spoke   too   soon   when   he   saw   his   little   brother   walk   up   towards   him.   it’s   not   that   barley   didn’t   want   to   see   ian.   he   did.   it’s   just   that   things   were   awkward   between   them.   barley   was   never   good   at   articulating   his   feelings   so   he   didn’t   know   how   to   say   the   right   things   to   ian   when   he   so   desperately   wanted   to.   it   felt   like   now   was   his   chance.      “   ian,   hey.   ”      he   greeted   with   a   small   smile.      “   look   at   you,   kid.   you   clean   up   nice.   ”      he   could   hear   their   mom   fawning   over   ian   in   the   distance.

ian had every intention on working tonight, blissfully unaware that the full moon ball was even taking place until a couple nights ago. but the weekly meeting he had with his boss on friday changed the trajectory of, well, everything when he offered ian a permanent manager position in elias. the raise alone made him agree right away, knowing that he could use the money ... but now he had to tell everyone. at least, with the majority of the city under one roof, he was able to convince the owners to close the tavern for the night. 

running into barley, while expected to some degree, threw him off balance for a second - but he matched his brother’s smile at the compliment as he looked down at his own outfit. “ do you you think so ? i feel kind of underdressed compared to everyone else ... i just bought this for work. ” his gaze fell to barley’s sleeves, smirking as he pinched a bit of fringe between his fingers. “ let me guess - penny’s entire outfit is made out of this pink stuff. ”
