Photoshop sprite sheet generator script
2D game asset development is all about sprite sheets! Our team uses Photoshop to create pixel assets for Wand Wars. The built-in animator is a sweet tool-set but it lacks a way of exporting to sprite sheets.
Bogdan created a Photoshop script that lets us do just that. Get the sprite sheet generator here on GitHub.
It should work with messy nested grouped layers and adjustment layers. Report bugs here or tweet at Bogdan.

And yet somehow people still fall for it
Well, let’s put this in perspective. The “Games Journalists” have been declaring GamerGate a fringe minority of people arguing against women in gaming, and have said that the revolt was dead no less that eight times.
Que a full six months later, GamerGate is going stronger than ever, with more and more people posting about it. Making videos, countering the media narrative.
So you, as a professional in the games industry haven’t been paying much attention. After all, GamerGate is a bigger issue for AAA devs. Corporate types. Not the brick and mortar people who WORK on games. You’ve heard murmurs, but never really seen exactly what was going on.
So coming in, you see a pretty pathetic smear job being thrown at your consumers. One that attempts to make numerous ad hominem attacks, and then justify them by claiming a small handful of women were harassed, despite all of them being utterly unremarkable before GamerGate, and even after having almost no real connection to the industry, save for the journalists in question. The very same journalists who conspicuously, are also in question for numerous conflicts of interests, and political ideology pushing.
Wouldn’t you, as a professional, side with the people who’ve held up the industry from the beginning? Especially given it’s going to be them you answer to in the future, not the politically correct fun police, but the gamers who buy your games?
It may be a legitimate opinion on his part, or it could be a pretty obvious business move, but either way the result is the same. GamerGate is going to win. Anti-Gamers? They don’t care about gaming. Most of them don’t game, nor do they consider themselves gamers. Why side with them if they’re not going to have to deal with the repercussions of their crusade?
Had a Lot of Fun at the Global Game Jam 2015
Friday, January 23rd, 2015 I took part my first Game Jam! And also my first time having my work in a game. It was an amazing learning and social experience and I got to meet and work with great people.
After a near panic attack thinking I lost my keys minutes before I wanted to leave for Orlando, I reached the lobby at Full Sail seeing a lot more people than I expected. Little did I know from the initial 9 people when I registered to the 70 I saw listed a day before, the list had grown to 177 jammers listed! (Not sure how many were actually there) A good chunk of them came in pre-formed teams, and of the 5 possible teams from people left over there were only 3 dedicated artists left in the room!
I was expecting to have to do a lot of work on my own but fortunately our team grew by a few people once some late comers showed up adding more dedicated artists. The theme was announced, it was “What do I do Now” and we immediately got to making ideas. Seems the most immediate idea was a survival game for obvious reasons, so we all immediately scrapped that. Joshua (blue shirt far right in picture below) started the idea we latched on to, which was essentially “You completed the mission, what do you do now?” in the context of raiding a tomb and finding the treasure. Along with seeing what destructive things you committed on the way in (“Why did I destroy that bridge?”).
We all thought the idea worked and settled on it, soon talking about it over a meal at crispers.
From Silhouette to 3D at the Global Game Jam
I immediately began on silhouettes because I figured that would be the shortest way to get feedback and progress fairly linearly. In the image above on the far left are rejected silhouettes when i asked the team, I then made quick varied sketches with the three chosen silhouettes. Everyone picked their favorite features and we have the result on the far right!
I then moved on to making a base model and rig in Blender so Mike (brown jacket) could begin animation as soon as possible (which was in Maya but we made it work). From there I built the model with more details. I regret designing the crazier curvy hair style and should have went with the more spikey design or something simpler. Hair took as much time modeling/UVing as the other parts combined! I also sadly forgot the blue neon face painting rushing to make sure I could have the model complete in the next hour to begin testing with Jesse (red jacket, finishing up the game).
I think after the whole process the model was complete in about 20 hours of the Jam. To the left is a rendering of her. Textures here were made in MudBox and Photoshop CC.
The other assets I helped get created, we had Joel (thumbs up guy) who was fairly knew to 2D and 3D software but was a very big help in creating 3D assets, textures, and some of the hieroglyphs you see after teaching him some basics. Joshua also created a lot of the assets using Maya, Zbrush and Photoshop along with him. And Victor Modeled and textured the Chest and traps. I spent most of my other time modeling a few other assets and cleaning up and organizing some of the assets before they went in along with getting them set up in Unity.
And with very little time left painted this title screen (logo made by Joshua) in about 30 minutes! I would have had more time but GitHub was failing me so we had some assets.
Programming/Sound Props
We had an initial scare when we started; one of our programmers Jesse ended up having a failing cooling fan so was unfortunately out of the first evening. But we were still able to get things rolling initially thanks to Dave (Coors shirt) and Eric (blue jacket, left). Eric to my surprise actually worked on the UI for 50 Cent Bullet Proof! Honestly never expected to meet anyone from that game.
The sound team was awesome and made some fantastic tracks and custom sound effects you hear in the game, compared to the unusual lack of artists we had a lot more sound people around and the two we had Deepanshu and Aaron (blue shirt and grey jacket respectively) were fantastic! I’ll be sure to update this post if they post the music anywhere, but for now hear it in the game!
Closing
We ended up more or less finishing the game with about an hour to spare but had issues uploading and such to the Global Game Jam page. Most of it is good now though after trying throughout the day.
This was some of the most fun I’ve had, and I can’t wait to do it again. I hope to keep in contact with the great people I met and worked with!
Here you can find the page for the game with the last minute name Amazonia. Enjoy what you can!

Martial Artist: Hand Painted Game Model
Another model for the Polycount weekly challenge, this time I was learning Mudbox while working on this one. I ran into some glitches but overall Mudbox was great for painting textures. I still did the majority in Photoshop CC though.
The modeling was done in blender this time since I’m very fast in that application with modeling and UV’s. Speaking of UV’s I received some advice after working on this I hope to apply soon!
Lastly the hair was a challenge and I spent some time researching on methods, I like the results but I hope to do better next time.

A Great Read #Gamedev
Yeah honestly it doesn't matter what you support or believe in - you should have the guts to say what you have to say off anon - like seriously. Yeah but anyway GamerGate has actually accomplished a lot - you'd be surprised. It's also not really a movement as much as an idea - that a lot of people of different backgrounds participate in. Look some accomplishments up - common news articles generally don't publish them but sites like theralphretort or simply going to gamergate.me - you'll findsome
GamerGate has accomplished… making women scared for their lives, keeping “gamer” a gated community (I am more proud of that pun than I should be), and trying to keep games from being looked at academically/critically because the “idea” is scared of change. I agree that it’s not really a movement, as “movement” implies that it’s trying to accomplish something. Rather, it seems to just be kind of sexistly bumble around and bite its own tail.
Then again, I guess that “trying to keep women out of gaming” is something of a goal. Just, ya know, a shit goal.
And what evidence is there to support all of these claims? Based upon your understanding, how is GamerGate trying to keep women out of game development?
Well, the amount of hate and doxxing sent towards women who have said almost anything about gaming or Gamergate as a thing is a pretty good indication. I’d think that would’ve been obvious.
What’s the “amount?” Specific examples would be nice, or at least a round-about figure that better illustrates that the majority of those in favor of the movement participated in such activities - simply saying these things and claiming them to be obvious doesn’t actually prove the claim.
For example, here’s evidence of an anti-GamerGater trying to rally a boycott of a female game developer because of her support for GamerGate:
(Source: https://twitter.com/untimelygamer/status/537446450352115713)
Evidence that an anti-GamerGater is not open to discussing this very issue:
(Source: https://twitter.com/frankcifaldi/status/539490175504494592)
An example of anti-GamerGaters bullying a fellow anti-GamerGater off of Twitter:
(Source: https://twitter.com/srhbutts/status/538058587076296704)
An example of an anti-GamerGater comparing GamerGate to ISIS:
(Source: https://twitter.com/SJWreptilian/status/542797085494743040)
These are, of course, a handful of examples that I felt I could share because sourcing them was easier than some other examples I’ve seen and were not archived, apparently. Based upon these few examples would it be fair to generalize against all those who are anti-GamerGate?
And the sad part is this isn’t even some of the worst parts of the anti-GamerGate side, because there are people who claim themselves to be journalists who have and continue to write some foul things to defend their position. The reason I haven’t shared those examples is because if one is to accept that GamerGate is truly a movement based upon dealing with the lack of ethics in gaming journalism then it’s easy to interpret their writings as holding a bias to divert attention away from their wrong doings and construct a narrative that rallies support for them.
So when you say that all who support GamerGate are ”trying to keep women out of gaming,” you would need to provide some evidence to support such a claim, even if it’s just a few individuals.
And wait, to add to this:
All of the “gamer gate” people who have doxxed others HAVE BEEN REPORTED. They got called out by the gamer gate community and, if I’m not mistaken, the GG community called the FBI on them. They even donated over $16,000 to a bullying prevention charity. Though Newsweek released an article stating that data is consistent with GamerGate being about harassment. An actual methodological analysis shows that the vast majority (anywhere from 85-90%) of the data indicated a neutral response. And if you look through these post on KotakuInAction, it’s all about taking down those in the GG community who have harassed and doxxed others. Hell, there’s even a subreddit in reference to reporting harassment and doxxing on Twitter. And don’t forget about the stuff regarding 4Chan and The Fine Young Capitalists with 4Chan donating money, enough so to design this character because TFYC’s got doxxed by Zoe Quinn and, thus, the birth of Vivian James.
But, the Anti-GG side really actually loves to
doxx people. Anti-GG is known to false flag shit. And Anti-GG is guilty of some pretty disgusting harassment. And here’s a video about it. As well as this, trying to pin things that are completely unrelated to GG. And sources like TheVerge have repeatedly parroted that Gamers are dead, GamerGate is dead, etc. when the fact is that it is as alive as ever.
But here, take all of this, too:
Link.
Link.
Link.
Link to lots more links about GamerGate.
Link to a woman gamer speaking in favor of GamerGate.
Link to anti-GG folks purposely stirring up shit so that they can blame it on GamerGate.
And here, for good measure, have a link to someone in the gaming journalist industry, a minority man, fearing for his career after coming out in support of journalistic integrity.
And the fact that and Anti-GG lied about someone harassing the devs as That Dragon Cancer:
And the fact that some guy got the shit beat out of him by his ex girlfriend and her friends for being pro-GG:
And, well, there less of an article and more pieced together evidence. And Milo, the guy who is one of the most unbiased people in Gamergate, contacted the Police.
And all of this:
But, there’s also this, GGers who reported in on Twitter about their harassment:
Also, don’t forget that Anita (who is like the head of the Anti-GG campaign) is shit at doing research. Here, a Game Spy interview with Mari Shimazaki, the character designer for Baynetta and an image:
But I guess knowing about why GG is a thing must be so inconvenient for you, right, mixtercasual?
(post sources for the facts above: here, here, here, here, here, here, and here and I could go on, but I’ll stop here, though everything above is from all of these sources)
Hot Damn!
Get rekt tho
Not cutting this for the smackdown. As a woman, GamerGate doesn’t do anything to make me feel unwelcome. Numerous women are in GamerGate, ranging from feminists to female gamers to female devs to porn stars.
If anything, GamerGate is helping women in STEM because it is actively combating the thing a lot of women say puts them off of getting into game design: Fear mongering from authoritarians.
How about you actually go ask some questions in KotakuInaction? Or ask the Hashtag? Sto making assumptions, do your own research.
Mad love to you people
