I’m going to level with you. I have listened to The Devil Went Down to Georgia for most of my life. We were a country music household, this was a staple of my childhood along with Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and that one Chipmunks country album.
I have no idea what “Fire on the mountain run boys run/The Devil's in the house of the rising sun/Chicken in the bread pan picking out dough/Granny does your dog bite no child no” means and at this point I’m too scared to ask.
For once I can be of assistance.
Each of the lyrics comes from an old-time hickory song for fiddles, and is a lyric from that corresponding song.
"Fire on the Mountain" --> "Fire on the Mountain, run boys run"
Fire On The Mountain - Fiddle Player POV
"The House of the Rising Sun" --> "The Devil's in the house of the rising sun"
House of the Rising Sun
"Ida Red" --> "Chicken in the bread pan peckin' out dough"
Ida Red - Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys
"Granny Will Your Dog Bite" --> "Granny does your dog bite? 'No child, no'."
FTC #149 Granny Will Your Dog Bite
And for your furthered education, The Mountain Whipporwill.
Mountain Whippoorwill (aka How Hillbilly Jim Won the Great Fiddler's Prize)
this is the key part of the song, that a lot of people miss. people have this misconception that the contest between Johnny and The Devil is about who is the better fiddle player. but it isn't. its about who is the better fiddler.
in a time before things like radios and record players, every time you heard music was because there was somebody in the room with you playing an instrument. and many, many, many social events involved dancing, which requires music. so, if you're planning any kind of gathering in the american south or appalachia, you need to find a fiddler. and the fiddler's job is to play music that everybody knows and likes and can dance to.
the mistake The Devil makes in his bet with Johnny is that he misinterprets the contest as being about technical ability, so he has this big flashy song. he plays fast and impressively with a band of demons playing unfamiliar instruments in unfamiliar rhythms. he's definitely more skilled at playing than Johnny, and thinks he has it in the bag.
but Johnny wins because the contest is about being the best fiddler. the song uses these lines mentioned above as a shorthand for saying that Johnny is playing these songs. Johnny launches into a set of the most popular songs, played well, and that's what gives him his big win. A good fiddler knows all the hits, and can read the room to know what to play next. The Devil loses because he completely fails to read the room, and doesn't know the right songs.

Ok extra context from your friendly neighborhood Master's Degree holding archivist:
Archives are "curated" according to what's called a "collection policy". That means a policy that dictates what you collect; usually along a theme. For example at the university I used to work at the collection policy was to collect archival material pertaining to the local area and its history/important figures. At the historic home I currently work at, the collection policy covers materials pertaining to the person who lived at the house.
AO3 collects fan works and original writing. That's it. That's how they "curate". They don't allow a copy paste of published works (for legal reasons) and they don't allow commissioned works (for legal reasons) . Everything else that falls under fan works and original writing is part of their collection policy. Everything. That's how archives work.
Librarian for 6+ years with an archival background, the entire premise of the initial argument is laughably untrue anyway.
Like yeah, a master's in library science is a prerequisite for most existing library/archival jobs, but any ham-and-egger who wants to start their own archive is allowed to do that, there's no High Council of Archivists who's going to swing by to check your credentials and shut you down if you're not properly licensed. The creators of the archive are highly qualified with the academic credentials to back it up, but even if they weren't Oakly would still be wrong.

I DO think tumblr's dev team has been instructed to constantly implement new features and that's why they keep tweaking the UI in goofy ways. I imagine this is an upper management thing, so even if we say "well don't change anything and just maintain the status quo" they'll continue to make other changes anyway.
I will admit I REALLY like the recent improvements they've added to tumblr's search (you can exclude terms now!! you can search multiple tags!! and time frames!!) so it's not like they're incapable of adding useful features. it might be mutually beneficial for us as users if we were more vocal about things we want and don't want. Some features I'd like to see added:
spoilerable text
spoilerable images
the return of hover text!! remember when we had that?
ability to embed videos in reblogs
ANIMATED GIF ICONS!!!!!!!!!!!!
the ability to turn off other people's animated gif icons
the ability to filter original posts on a user's ENTIRE blog, not just a tag/search
more html support, like what if we could build tables
adding reactions to replies! I'm glad we can like them more but it'd be nice if we could take this further
embeddable tiktoks?? I don't even use tiktok but I remember trying to embed one in like 2020 and I'm surprised we still can't! even vines were able to be embedded
being able to search in your DMs. not being able to do this is why I tend to redirect mutuals to discord
MUTING USERS POSTS/COMMENTS WITHOUT BLOCKING THEM! just cause I don't want to see someone's posts doesn't mean I don't want us to never interact ever
a mutual-only dashboard feed
a feed for the blogs you're subscribed to
get rid of tumblr tv lmao I've literally never used it
"mark as read" button for communities without opening them
please dear god no AI shit unless it's a way for me to filter/block it easier
several of these I've submitted support tickets for under "feedback", and if there's anything you feel strongly about I suggest you do too!
it is honestly kind of funny to take the stance that BMI isn't enourmously problematic because the weight classifications have been "adjusted" since its inception when the real problem of "it is literally just your height divided by your weight, which tells you fuck all about the status of someone's health" is still fundamentally there
And just to remind everyone, BMI was invented to be a population level measurement. It was never intended to apply to individuals, it was just a crude way of assessing if different regions had rampant food insecurity or overabundance. The individual usage came about in the '70s along with a heavy dose of fatophobia.

I mean this in good faith, but Kamala Harris was vowing to make our military more lethal than ever, with zero plans to abolish ICE (something that was also not abolished under Obama, Biden, and all of these presidents/candidates had violent foreign policy and violent crackdowns on immigrants in their dossier. Five thousand deaths from police brutality and millions of deportations under Biden is not something that can be swept under the bus, nor is bombing the middle east and funding the genocide on Palestine. When people criticize these people it is not out of privilege, it is out of recognition that American politicians all hold imperialist agendas and that democrats have proven that they will commit war crimes and anti-immigrant violence if it benefits them. I think the idea that somehow the benefits Americans recieved under democratic presidents “makes up” for the ordered deaths of millions is completely indefensable. We have had a devastatingly imperialist right wing government for decades by the standards of anywhere else in the world.
I mean this in good faith, but you need to pull your head out of your fucking ass and look around.
She wasn't going to abolish ICE but ICE also wasn't clearing out entire apartment buildings at the request of property developers and disappearing citizens to "Alligator Alcatraz". She wasn't going to usher in a new era of peace, but the US wasn't drone striking random fishing boats in the Caribbean and "pivoting to wartime footing". She was going to keep selling arms to Israel, but she wasn't putting herself in charge of depopulating Gaza for real estate.
If you're so far removed from a situation that you can't tell the difference between "bad" and "worse", then yeah, that absolutely is a sign of privilege.
And y'all really need to look into governments elsewhere, because a lot of them are far to the right of the US on a lot of issues.
I mean this in good faith but I think that some of the people who make these outlandish "what about"-isms are actually deliberately spewing propaganda.
"It is easy, as the Trump administration attempts to consolidate authoritarian power and to rearrange the US into a formal white nationalist autocracy where power is defined by displays of violent domination, to think that the moral degeneracy represented by the immigration agents and those who command them represents a core truth of the American spirit – that ours is a country diseased in mind and soul, incapable of fulfilling the lofty goals of dignity and equality for all that have so long animated our national myths. There is some truth in this dark thought.
But there is another truth, too: that everywhere ICE goes, they have been met with ridicule, resistance, and contempt from ordinary Americans, unarmed and unbending, who have faced down the kidnappers and bullies in persistent protests and street actions – sometimes even succeeding in freeing a kidnapped neighbor or bullying the thugs out of their neighborhoods. This, too, is a truth of this country: that people like Martinez, and like Good, are more numerous than the racists and the autocrats."
