DAY 1182) Chroma Key - Red Sector A
Composer: Cryptovolans
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CRYPTOVOLANS
This is possibly the most obscure one on this blog so far, to a gamejam game made in power point for global game jam 2015! Cryptovolans is one of my favorite musicians and favorite people AND it is his BIRTHDAY so here’s something from him to celebrate!
This one’s a bit challenging to talk about because it’s polymetric AND polyrhythmic.
Starts out with a high airy sound doing 6+5 11/8, which can feel kind of subtle (as in, feels like plain 5/8 instead of 6+5 if you’re not paying attention, at least to me) because shortly you hear a much more clearly 5/8 layer fade it’s way in, so the 5/8 stats to feel more prominent as an idea.
One very cool thing about that 5/8 layer is it starts to desync from itself, and go out of phase Steve Reich style, so you get to hear the ostinato re-sync itself but delayed off one note from itself and all that cool stuff. That’s pretty crazy on top of something that’s already polymetric!
The 6+5 11 layer comes in around :35 again, but the 5/8 layer fades in on top of it shortly after, not actually the same tempo as each other at that point, in addition to already being different timesigs.
Hopefully that description is enough to explain what’s going on here! Probably worded it all really badly but oh well.
Also the title’s a reference to the song “Red Sector A” by the band Rush...a band definitely known for odd time signatures (even if that particular song isn’t in odd time).
