I was up too late last night and thinking about Therapyspeak Joker, connected by a a long associative string with a fanfic I'd been looking forward to whose style disappointed me. My brief conclusion is, once again, it's not what you write but how you write it. There's a big audience for our favorite characters being sweet and supportive to our other favorite characters. Even if our favorite characters are unsupportive assholes in canon! But also when they're total sweethearts in canon and the fanfiction could feel like a logical extension of that.

But if they're sweet and supportive in the most generic terms possible, what's the point? I already read that version (probably in a mental health workbook).

Please try to put some flesh on the bones of your ideas. Tell a story, don't just quote from your background research. Give your characters voices and perspectives. Develop a style. I know this is way easier said than done! But it starts getting done by realizing the Therapyspeak version you wrote is your outline/first draft from which you can create a version with distinct characterization that's fun to read.

Okay actually, to add onto this, and a metric I use to make sure a scene is working, and you could use variations on this but to pull from the above example:

If im writing a love story, you should know the characters are in love without me having to write the word love.

If a story is about navigating consent, you should know the characters are hashing out the details without me dropping the word.

I should know an archnemesis without ever dropping the word.

I think this largely boils down to textural, immersive writing. Are you close enough to the characters to get the emotional beats? Is the dialogue evocative enough in both text and subtext to let you read the relationship? Can you see the struggle without having to spell it out??

even if someone WAS just lazy and simply didn't want to do anything but lie on the couch and watch tv, they should still have these things. it's irrelevant whether some people aren't actually lazy because everyone, including hypothetical lazy people, should have their basic needs met.

if we have the resources to do it, there is no defense of letting people die because they don't want to work, and much less because they can't.

I don't want lazy people to have basic necessities because they "actually" deserve them because they ARE working or CAN'T work. I want lazy people to have basic necessities because they are people, and we shouldn't leave them to die when we have the resources not to.
