Ive seen the idea of swapping the scenarios theyre in, so instead i swapped their vibes. Simon having the best time in that blood ocean, making friends with mutant fish that can speak telepathically, while Grace is fighting for his life against an alien rock that generates hazardous atmosphere.

As someone who has seen both movies, (iron lung three times) here's a few things i see ppl get wrong/ misunderstand:

Simon is missing his left arm, up to the shoulder. Like at the bicep.

Simon is not just a eel, he's fused with the seed and explodes into a tree.

The seed was on the left arm, fused, reversed Pinocchioed him, and got ripped off.

He kills Elli by exploding into a fucking tree.

He met God.

God gave him prophetic visions and fucked him up. Promised Simon would live, and like a Genie, didn't specify how.

Also some time manipulation bullshit was happening.

Simon would not necessarily be impressed/ emotinal from looking at stars. In a flashback he's seen stars before, but knows they're ghost light. He would be grateful being able to see them again though.

He WOULD be very emotinal about any plant life. He found a new will to live when he found the little seed. He had a breakdown when the little charm cracked.

His "job" on Eden was to nourish the last tree with the people he killed. Hence his nickname.

There's a lot symbolism regarding trees (the hull window crack)

Yes, Simon can be aggressive, but is only in situation where his life is threatened. He's also remorseful. He's apologetic and does want to make up for his wrongs, even if it wasn't his fault.

Grace is not a coward.

Like Simon, Grace did not go down without a fight. He ran, yes, but when he was being sedated he shouted how he would sabotage the mission. Do everything he can to make it fail, just so the wouldn't risk putting him on the exhibition.

He is incredibly brave. He did a space walk without training. He trusted rocky that he wouldn't explode in the space bridge. He CLIMBED ON THE BURNING EXTERIOR OF THE HAIL MARY TO RETRIEVE THE COLLECTION DEVICE.

Grace is not a crybaby. He crys for very real, reasonable reasons! When he was betrayed? When they found a solution to save their stars? When Rock gave him a way to return to Earth? It would be weird for him NOT to cry! (Edit: person in the tags you're so right)

He would be scared meeting Simon, but he would not be a coward.

They BOTH have a "This is bigger than me" mentality. They both risked everything to ensure the survival of humanity. They were willing to die.

It's not selfish just wanting to live.

I don't think either of them would have a problem doing anything to survive. (Eating the Taumoeba or Me-burgers)

Random Iron Lung Headcanon

Simon was named ‘The Butcher’ before the explosion, but not because he was a target kind of killer for Eden. He was just like any other soldier until the Filament Station. He was a soldier of Eden that was fighting in the 9-day battle, which is when he specifically was given the name not by Eden but by COI due to his kill count in that battle. And when the explosion happened it just racked up the kill count.

Simon was the only survivor of the explosion because he was the only one, from Eden in the explosion, who wanted to survive.

Like Eden gives off a very cultish vibe, but also through both Simon’s words ‘I just want to live. Why doesn’t anyone else want that?’ And ‘I’m sorry brother. I want to live.’ It gives off a very much resigned to their death kind of mindset. And I like to think that it’s the complicated mindset of Eden in large, even when trying to keep the Last Tree alive and all that, there must be some doubt or resignation that resources are scarce and there will be a day where there just…won’t be anything. To survive today but knowing they won’t get far anyway, so death is just the chosen outcome because it would mean that’s the end, the end of suffering, hunger and fighting. So suicide isn’t really an uncommon kind of thing to resort to.

I think Simon’s own want to live is what led him to being named the Butcher in the nine day battle, what made him have the highest counted kills and what had him keep fighting and Eden believing he’d be the perfect one for the job with a small team. They sent them off to bomb the filament station because if they can’t have the resource, no one can.

Except it was a suicide bombing, no way it couldn’t be because survivors would be taken like Simon had.

Except Simon, either not knowing this or because of other reasons doesn’t die in the explosion because when he finds out he’d fight against his own brothers to get out. He wants to live, he isn’t resigned, in fact I’ll say he’s hopeful in the way many in Eden aren’t.

He was the only survivor because he didn’t want to die so he escaped before he could in the explosion.

I like to think that Simon was very much a part of Eden and followed it all until the bombing and the realization that Eden won’t help him and that the people of Eden don’t want the same thing as him, they don’t want to live, not like he does. I think that in a way can screw up with someone’s faith in maybe not the cause, but the community.

He can still have guilt for it all, being the only survivor because he wanted to live or not doesn’t dissuade someone of guilt, he killed and he purposely killed to live. He earned the name he was given and he can live with that guilt. He isn’t sociopathic, he’s a soldier.
