There's like a large number of Singaporean men, who fucking hate patriarchal double standards that hurt them like serving National Service or being caned for committing serious offences whether in school or prison. (For context, only men and boys serve National Service in the army, and corporal punishment is only dealt out for men in Singapore.) And instead of questioning patriarchy and toxic masculinity, or dreaming of a kinder, gentler world that isn't punitive or carceral or violent, these men want women and girls to suffer as well.
Like, find a social media post from Singapore that addresses National Service and corporal punishment in Singapore, and you'd find a fuck ton of comments from men going on and on about how it's "sexist" and that women and girls should serve compulsory National Service and receive caning as well. Abolishing National Service and corporal punishment is not even an option to them. It's not about wanting society to actually be fair and equal, it's about wanting to punish women and girls.
It's impt to note that the pple I see calling for abolishing public caning in schools in Singapore have been feminists (and as a feminist and a radical leftist, I too agree with abolishing caning as well as national service). I don't see Singaporean men calling for this ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ

Singapore public so quick to condemn a female entrepreneur just based on some dude's Instagram post alleging she made a hurtful joke judging men based on their national service ranking. Receipts where??
Meanwhile, Singapore public was also so quick to criticise a young woman who started an online grp that compiles a list of men on dating sites that were abusive or toxic, claiming it's "doxxing" or "naming and shaming".
I fucking hate it here. So many SG men are misogynistic, and so are the number of pickme women.
Far be it from me to defend girlbosses and I know women in power are just as capable of enforcing the same toxic workplace environments and patriarchal status quos.
And that could have been some really interesting discourse on how girlbosses can be just as toxic as their male counterparts. Honestly, I have been treated the worse by female middle management who were pickmes, often being mean and unsupportive to female employees while being smiley and jokey with the male employees. That and a deeper dive into Singaporean men and National Service culture. But it seems to me like a lot of the men in the comments section are just using the female entrepreneur's insensitive joke as a gotcha against a woman talking about speaking up in the workplace and as justification to dogpile a female entrepreneur/CEO. I don't think it's a coincidence that the guy who initially called her out is a gym/fitness bro.
OP does realise that it's mostly Black Americans criticising her for good reason, right? She (OP uses she/her pronouns) didn't have to equate Black trans historical figures with American cultural imperialism right?
Do I think this site and various social media websites are too American-dominated? Yes.
Do I think Americans need to do more research about the histories and cultures from countries that arent Western European? Yes.
But, the boosting of Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera on social media have been done by queer and trans Black and Brown Americans who are celebrating their histories and are often reminders for white queer and trans Americans to not whitewash and erase Black and Brown trans historical figures who suffered the worst of homophobia and transphobia, and often did the most work fighting for rights that also benefit white queer and trans folks. So, it's crazy for OP to refer to this as "US pride hegemony" or "cultural imperialism".

Like yeah, I think it's possible for non-Black people of colour outside of America to actually boost our own histories and cultures, without dragging or shitting on Black and Brown Americans.
Imagine blaming the Americans for your countrymen's lack of knowledge on their own queer history, rather than British colonial laws that led to the erasure.
As I said, we only know about Marsha and Sylvia becos Black and Brown Americans have always made the effort to boost them and make sure their legacies aren't erased.
If i don't know enough about queer and trans Chinese history, that's on me. If Singaporeans don't know enough about our queer and trans histories, esp Indigenous Malay queer and trans pre-colonial history, that's on our government for enforcing colonial law and erasing them, and that's on us for not advocating enough. in aotearoa, june isnโt our pride, itโs theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that โyou owe your rights to Black trans womenโ is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Mฤori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa donโt even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we donโt.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. iโm truly sorry that most of you donโt see the negative impact your nationโs culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and cultureโs queer history, donโt accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
You could have brought up all of this without bashing black queer figures. Just celebrate your people without being us up. It's not that fucking hard.

This Karmelo Anthony situation really reminds me that white Americans really think self defense is only for them. These white male school shooters and crowd shooters will literally aim at defenseless people and get it called "responding to bullying" (i.e. being socially isolated for being a white supremacist at 14) and "self defense" (despite showing up to a protest against racism to threaten and commit murder).
But a Black kid stabs a racist white one for threatening and attacking him at school, and suddenly it's "why does he have weapons at school" (which is apparently legal to an extent in Texas) oh NOW we wanna act like people should turn the other cheek to bullying. Adam Sandler is like peak white male privilege becos people keep flocking to watch his mediocre movies and thus the studios allows him to keep making his mediocre movies. Then, once in a while he will get criticized for being racist/homophobic/transphobic/misogynistic and the internet gets angry about it until he stars in someone else's good movie then pple start praising him and his problematic behaviour gets swept under the rug and gets to be forgotten. But you have to remember that people are literally giving him the opportunities to be in these good films despite his mediocre movies. Then he will make another mediocre movie and the whole cycle repeats again. Meanwhile, he's using the money he makes off his mediocre movies to fund Rudy Guliani's political campaign becos surprise surprise, Adam Sandler is a Republican, shocking...

The problem with Adam Sandler is that like many secretly conservative comedians (e.g., Amy Schumer and Sacha Baron Cohen), the writing has been on the fucking wall for a while but since the pple they hurt are Black and Brown pple, Muslims etc., (mostly) White liberals do not listen to their victims and are willing to give them the benefit of doubt. Is it really surprising that Sandler, who has been criticized by Native Americans for being disrespectful to them would be supportive of Israel, an imperialist state that displaces and kills the indigenous Palestinians?
And oh my fucking god, I have even more shit to say about the pple he chooses to surround himself with (e.g., Chris Farley, Chris Rock, Norm Macdonald, Rob Schneider), 3 of the examples literally have been accused of sexual harassment. I truly believe that we can and should be judged by the pple we surround ourselves with.
From my working experience, I have literally worked with co-workers who are so good with kids, advocate for pple with special needs, love baking, generous with their gifts, and the same co-workers will also proudly spout homophobic and transphobic rhetoric. Some of the "loveliest" pple I have met are bigots.

I also really dislike how disconnected the citizens of Metropolis appear towards Superman in this film. Pre-reveal of the Kryptons being colonisers, the citizens of Metropolis don't even seem to care when Supes gets hurt in battle, only gathering around to film him. We don't get a sense of how these people feel about Supes, and becos of that you wouldn't know that Clark's been Superman for 3 yrs running. That's long enough for people to have thoughts and feelings about him
Ooh thank you for the link! I agree with everything on here. Especially with how poorly Malik was treated. That insight on Gunn "only knows how to write 3 female characters" and including Ma Kent in the "female airhead" characterizations is a good point too. I've been calling it his Guardians of the Galaxy archetypes that he likes to fall back on.
And the two reviewers you linked calling the film ugly,,like YES I've been saying this but I was so unimpressed by the color grading everyone was raving about. Metropolis is literally gray. How did Superpets beat yall on visual flair. There's a gross blue tint on everything, and those head cameras on flying characters like Supes and Hawkgirl look criminally ugly. Unflattering stuff. Too much lens flare backlighting. Mexican filter on Jarhanpur. Enough said.
The Metropolis citizens are a blob of people who are told what to feel by the narrative's convenience and have no say or nuance outside of it. If the newspaper says "Lex is evil now" then apparently that means forgiving Superman even though he's still a descendent of alien colonizers initially sent here to conquer. Cool. And this idea that all of Metropolis believes Lex's Kryptonian translation when the Kryptonians are characterized as literal Yellow Peril Replacement Theory invaders? How were there no immigrant population of Metropolis who thought that was bullshit? Well we know why. It's because Gunn thinks its believable, so all citizens think so.
Gunn doesn't want to make a politically radical movie. He wants a both-sides movie that can appease everyone. Little does he know that some people's political belief is in the dehumanization of other people. So this "kindness is something we all agree on" message doesn't fly.
