The reason Scully is so much different than anyone else they could've assigned to the X-Files with Mulder is that she's in a relentless pursuit of the truth like he is, just of scientific proof rather than concepts and ideas. She sees science for what it is: the explanation of natural phenomena, while others tend to see what we know of science as a set of rules that nature must follow. Therefore, she always seeks explanations, even if they don't make sense in the context of what we had previously thought to be true.

The first time I watched “Emily,” I was struck by Mulder’s line “…if I never want to see you hurt or harmed in any way” because he says it so matter-of-factly that Scully doesn’t even blink. It seems to be overshadowed by everything going on with Emily and therefore overlooked by both the audience and Scully. I particularly love that line because it’s not often we hear Mulder and Scully talk about their feelings, especially not directly to each other. Obviously we (and Scully) know that he cares about her, but hearing it so explicitly is not something that occurs often.

Season 5 should have been the perfect time for Mulder and Scully’s relationship to progress since Scully is now in remission, but there is unresolved tension throughout the entire season, exacerbated by Mulder’s newfound skepticism, Emily, and later Diana, which prevents them from moving forward. If only they could have communicated a little better, we may have seen their relationship evolve earlier. Season 5 is a weird transitional period in their relationship but luckily there are still some moments that demonstrate there are deep feelings underneath all the tension, even if they are few and far between.
