About Voyager
Wanted to wait until I could formulate this properly, but Voyager had me crying in the mcfucking club. I spoke with a friend about just how much Voyager means to FGO, and everything lined up so well. No wonder he’s the final Servant!
In Fate in general, one of the big motifs is that humanity is meaningful. This is shown best through the Throne itself – summoning those who impacted the world’s history. Those who did something amazing.
Mozart and Shakespeare, rather strange though they are, made countless works of art that brought emotion to every crowd.
Florence Nightingale saved hundreds of people’s lives, to the point where she was considered an angel.
Jason, for all his flaws, led a team of the greatest heroes of Greece on an amazing quest.
Columbus, despite his horrific deeds, still performed an unthinkable quest – letting his homeland find the New World through sheer will and grit.
Gilgamesh rejected even the gods, and allowed humanity to triumph of their own accord.
The list goes on, and on. Even if many in the Throne are considered awful people – and rightly so, I might add – they still represent one of humanity’s ‘peaks’ – a great achievement that could never be topped.
Each achievement, and each person at its head, shows us two things.
The first is just how far we’ve come. We went from Gilgamesh’s time in Uruk, dreaming of the stars, to Columbus helping his people find a new world – albeit helping the rampant imperialism in the process quite heavily.
We had people who traversed the world, and people who tried to conquer the world, with varying levels of success.
And all of it led up to Voyager – the living image of the second point.
Voyager is the living, breathing proof that it was worth it. That we won’t be forgotten. It carries the art of humanity, the music of humanity, the biology of humanity. It carries images of even the smallest things, like a teacher helping their student, or a perfect circle. And it took what I still consider to be the most important image in history.
The Pale Blue Dot. Do you see it? Just that little white dot, suspended in a sunbeam.
That’s us. That’s all of us. That’s almost every spirit in the Throne. Everything humanity has done, previous to Voyager, was left on that little blue dot, hardly even a couple pixels in diameter.
Voyager entered new ground that no other aspect of humanity could. Voyager performed things that Gilgamesh could only dream of – things that would make Columbus’ corrupted heart skip a beat for once.
Voyager proved humanity. Voyager proved, and continues to prove, that somewhere in the world, we exist.
All of our progress culminated in Voyager. The sign to the rest of the world – “There’s a little space in this universe for us.”
And even when the world is destroyed, some three trillion years into the future at most, Voyager remains.
A silent, untouched testimony to humanity, carrying its hopes and dreams for a brighter future.
And I’ll be damned if that’s not the most beautiful fucking thing I’ve ever seen.
Every illustration of Voyager from Fate/Requiem volume 1.
