Goodbye, Little Salmon π
A Heartopia AU by Ichufh/Ivanya π
!!TW: depressive implications, abuse, death!!
This story is based on a series of vent arts that I had made previously. Due to some requests in my other social, I decided to properly develop the series into an actual AU, though the purpose is still for venting.
In this universe, Vanya was introverted and had a more complicated relationship with his family. He was forced to become what his family wanted him to be, but his lack of practical skills had given him the title of "The Cursed One in the Lure family". To compensate his lack of practical skills and to achieve the title of a Master Angler, he had to spent his entire life studying the art of angling. Unfortunately, theorical skills wasn't enough to gain said title, thus his family used another way to get him that title. It was to hide the shame of having a "cursed" son who couldn't even catch a small fish. Vanya had to live in a lie, hiding the truth from many people.
There is no actual ending to this AU yet...
Ivan Ivanovic Lure, or Vanya, is a child from the famous Lure family, his family is known for being professionals in the art of angling. Since he was a kid, he had been forced to study everything about said topic to be able to achieve the title of a master angler like the rest of his family. Unfortunately despite having the knowledge and skills in theorical angling, Vanya lacks the practical skills. This was noticed by the rest of his family and thus given him the title of "the cursed child" that later would pressure him in every steps he would take. His father is a strict and demanding man, Vanya has to endure the pressure from his father's expectation since he was little.
Whenever he makes a mistake, he will recieve punishments. His father would smack his arms and hands using a wooden ruler, cursing his inability to be better and unable to meet to his expectations. Vanya would grow up becoming isolated and reserved, even as far as becoming socially awkward. Despite that, he genuinely wants to be better to meet up with his family's expectation. Although once he becomes an adult, he still couldn't even catch a single fish. Facing the rumours about a Lure not being able to fish, Vanya's family decided to use a different way to "help" him obtain his title as a master angler. This, of course, brings more pressure into Vanya. He has to lie in front of others, hiding the truth so that he could keep up as a Lure.
Vanya hears the news about the sighting of a legendary whale on a faraway land. In truth, despite lacking skills in angling, he actually loves marine biology. He loves learning about fish or other sea creatures, his favorite species are the sea mammals like whales. So when he heard about the news, he chooses to travel there by himself. But of course he has to make a promise with his father to be given the permission to travel so far away, which is to not bring shame to the Lure family and to keep up with their expectations. He also needs to keep in touch with his family by sending news or reports of his findings, so in the end he will still be watched by his family.
In the present time, Vanya has been living in the island for quite awhile and he has been adjusting his life in it quite alright. But the pressure from his family prevents him from feeling safe or relieved, so whenever he's asked to help on teaching about fishing to the new guild members, he would often get distracted or lost in his thoughts. The other members like Annie or Atara try to ask him what's bothering him, but Vanya always refuse to answer and lie to them by saying it's nothing. With no one to talk to or rely on, Vanya is stuck with his own insecurity and anxiety from the pressure of his family's expectation.
Vanya loves to observe the fish in his alone time, sitting down near a body of water while watching the fish swim around freely. Seeing their freedom, Vanya wishes to become a fish. Whenever he sits down at the edge of the lake, staring into his reflection, a patch on his face and his teary eyes, a fish would come out to greet him. Talking to them despite not recieving replies has been a habit of his since who knows how long. He has nobody but the fish.
One day, the news of someone from his family will come to visit the island triggers his trauma. He would run to the woods, towards a river. There he stumbles to get on his knees and look into his reflection. The fear in his eyes are clear and the cold sweats begin to flood his skin. His hands are shaking and his breathing is uneven, he's afraid. To hear what his father has to say, to hear the insult from his own family... he has to face them. After he feels more calm and composed, he steels himself to meet his guest.
Things sadly didn't go well, of course. He has to take a detour when heading home to avoid being seen by people, he doesn't want them to see the marks on his hands and face. It was a warning, a reminder that he's there because his father allows it with an exchange for obedient. Since then he would feel uneasy and anxious of the day another visitor from his family would come visit.
(Vanya often tries to avoid people, but when he does get caught, he usually puts up face to act like nothing happen as he hides his injuries.)
In the end Vanya's life in the island, far away from his home land, remains the same like back home. Fear, anxiety, insecurity, and all the things that came from the pressure his family gave haunts him. Even talking to the fish no longer helps him cope.
There's a day where the punishment is a lot severe than before, it was the day his father comes to him personally. What's worse that in front of his friends on the island, he's ridiculed and shamed for his incompetence. He has to endure it. He has to. But he soon breaks down when he arrives home.
For the last entry on his diary, Vanya writes a short story of a little salmon who wished to jump over a large rock. Even after being ridiculed by others, he was still determined to accomplish his goal. In the end, the little salmon who had grown into an adult salmon managed to jump over the rock and fell into the other side. There was nothing but a bottomless pit. Vanya wished that he could do the same, if it means to get away from whatever is going on in his life. Although soon after he rips of the page of the story from his diary and hides it somewhere else, he thinks it's too depressive to someone who might discover it.
(The short story of the Little Salmon)
Staring into the endless ocean, Vanya stands there by himself. There's no rock to jump over, no fish to accompany him. There's only a cliff. The wind is strong that day, perhaps because it's going to be a storm. But to the tired young man, it feels... liberating.
He doesn't know whether it's going to be his last day or not, but at this moment he doesn't want to care for his future.
"I wonder if I could see the whale today... do I have to live longer to do that? ahh, i'm beat..."
Perhaps his brain is trying to reassure him from all the stress by showing the cute characters he had drawn when he was a child, playing around him at that moment. A curious little polar bear who loves to play hide and seek, and the little salmon...
- He doesn't usually introduce himself as "Vanya", especially to the townfolks or other members in the island since he usually just go by name "Ivan". There's no actual reasons for it, he thinks he need to be polite to strangers or new people. Though in the end he did allow a few people who are close to him to call him using the nickname "Vanya".
- I've made another AU where the characters are the opposite MBTIs/personalities, but in this AU Vanya is the only one with different MBTI/personality which is INFP. Also, he's both introverted and socially awkward compared to the INFP Vanya that I usually draw for my mirrorshipping which is introverted but still a social person.
- He does get help from others from time to time, like after that one time he got ridiculed by his father in front of the others. But he feels guilty to have anyone else involved so he usually politely refuse their offer. Though he does feel quite better at knowing that there are still people who cares for him.
(After that one scene of a severe punishment, Vanya recieves worried calls from Atara and Annie.)
- Due to its purpose of being solely for vent arts, the Vanya in this AU is inherently a self-insert. Plus i'm also a fictionkin so in a way this is also a backstory for my own sona... it's very complicated so don't think too much about it hahah
- Kind of related to the statement before, this AU doesn't have a proper or actual ending yet. Instead it only has possible endings that people could interpret it as they like. One of the possible endings is the one that was used in the "Twins at the carousel" trend.
(One of the possible endings where Vanya managed to jump of the cliff like the little salmon in his story. He looked up at the sky one last time, even if it was dark, it felt liberating.)
That's all for now. I might fix some of the parts on the story and add more stuff later, but this will be the current update of my AU. Thank you for your time to read all of this, i'm glad people genuinely enjoy reading angst Vanya content even though it's originated from personal vent arts hahah
Thank you again for the supports and love, see you next time! (hopefully) πβ¨β¨
