Throwback Wednesday: Prayer Camp, Nkawkaw, Ghana (warning: long read below) Only some people in the town know the camp, although it sits just a short climb away, on the face of the nearby mountain. Hidden from sight by the edge of dense rainforest, it accepts anyone willing to pray or teach others how to. The whole place is just a stone ledge, half to four meters narrow and three hundred long. There are no barriers or chains, only trees and faith. It is not uncommon for some to stay here for 40 days, with food and water being delivered from the town and a huge overhung cliff wall to protect one's mattress from the rain. This slanted wall is covered in words of wisdom and prayers, but also names and phone numbers. “Direction for this place: 3 day fasting and your desire will be granted” You can hear sermons being preached in many places at the same time. The gatherings vary: modest or crowded, some are quiet, others quite fiery. All seem to be attended with great respect. Here and there one can hear people in a solitary trance. They chant or speak fast and loud in strange languages, with a Bible at hand, completely detached. Others sing more recognisable religious songs. Some seem to live there for longer, in makeshift shelters, looking after the blessed spring in a cave nearby. Others cook banku, a Make-You-Strong meal from soured maize, and sell it for a few pesewas. Selina was standing near one of such blessed grottoes. She has not spoken a single word when I approached her, she did not give a sign of permission or denial. She was on her inner quest, maybe longing after someone, maybe trying to beg God with silence. I knew she wanted me to take this picture. Out of all other polaroid portraits I’ve taken on the whole trip, only one came out in this peculiar way: a warm flame was engulfing her face, her calm and deep eyes.
