Analysis "As It Was" by Harry Styles

helloaaaaa I missed you guys lol, yes today we will do the analysis of "As It Was" both lyrics and video, so let's get started

LYRICS:

FIRST PART:

the song begins and we can see that it is the present day harry talking about harry from the past, saying that there was something holding him back which did not let him be him, something or someone, in this case the industry, the press etc. stood between his happiness and how the things of the past now he has to carry them, as he says in the part of "nothing say and everything gets in the way, seems you cannot be replaced and i'm the one on the stake".

CHORUS:

then we go to the chorus where he practically talks about how it doesn't matter what the world thinks about him, that he just needs his own approval "in this world, its just us, you know its not the same as it was" and even though things are not like before, he left a lot of himself in the previous years because of all the pressure, harry wants his "past self" to understand that only he matters.

SECOND PART:

it is the moment when harry was at his worst and where he hit rock bottom, he was hurt and felt alone "answer the phone; harry you're no good alone, why are you sitting at home on the floor" he also gave so many calls and cries for help but nobody noticed, nobody listened to him, nobody saved him "ringing the bell and nobody's coming to help".

BRIDGE:

before the bridge there is a related phrase "your daddy lives by himself, he just wants to know that you're well" harry during this part opens the doors of his home and lets us know how his parents' divorce was for him and gemma and that in spite of everything his father loves him and will always want his children to be well "leave america, two kids follow her" another theme that also touches the bridge is to get up, get out of that hole and overcome everything to be able to find true happiness and instead of remembering how everything was before it is time to trace your new path "go home, get ahead" "i don't wanna talk about the way that it was".

we have finished the analysis of the lyrics, now let's move on to the video.

MUSIC VIDEO:

clearly the video is about him, his sexuality and the femininity that comes with it, (we know harry has told us about this in fine line) of harry's relationship with his "past self" and how he has improved on this etc, btw we start with the first topic.

SEXUALITY, FEMININITY AND GENERAL PUBLIC

we start with harry through a glass wall simulating the kind of wardrobe he is in, practically a glass wardrobe is where many people notice and can see him but you can't get out and that keeps creating the idea that you are "straight" and this is reflected in how there are many people who don't pay attention, then he enters the room that i think would be home where he meets his femininity and his "past self" (the girl represents these two) how he clings to her and is faithful to her, how they try to separate him from her, until at one point this breaks down and he loses himself, leaving him lost and broken but time passes and Harry rises up and bares his soul and shows himself as he is, he creates his own path, the femininity meets him again and this time they become one and although he is still tied to that small part of his sexuality it is already defined and he has a reason to dance.

HARRY OF THE PAST AND HARRY OF THE PRESENT

we can also think that it is about his relationship with the Harry of the past, how he has improved after so many years and how the Harry of the present was able to move forward and bare his soul, to find himself and true happiness while in the past he did not feel so good about himself, he was afraid of what others would think and that is why he embraces the girl, implying that he understands why his "past self" cannot bare himself and show himself as he is.

EXTRAS

1- as I say again, it's about his parents' divorce and how he took it, hence the two children in the video.

2- the red and blue pills, in which the red one reflects a disturbing truth and the blue one the satisfied ignorance, that's why harry follows the girl in blue and gets restless when she is not there (these terms refer to the 1999 matrix movie) that's why harry followed her because he liked to stay in ignorance without being hurt by the truth but he learns to live with the truth and then he is touched and knows that he no longer needs that ignorance to continue with his life.

OBSERVATION

"golden" and "as it was" are too similar in terms of upbeat music and deeper lyrics.

CONCLUSION

what we learnt with as it was? that there are things that we will have to overcome on our own, heal on our own and when we are really well, talk about it and understand that it was a stage and we can move forward.

LETRA:

PRIMERA PARTE

la canción comienza y nos podemos dar cuenta que es el harry del presente hablando de harry del pasado, diciendo que había algo reteniéndolo algo el cual no lo dejaba ser el, algo o alguien, en este caso la industria, la prensa etc se interponían entre su felicidad y como las cosas del pasado ahora las tiene que cargar el tal como dice en la parte de "nothing say and everything gets in the way, seems you cannot be replaced and i'm the one on the stake"

luego nos vamos al coro donde prácticamente habla de como no importa que es lo que el mundo piense sobre, que solo necesita su propia aprobación "in this world, its just us, you know its no the same as it was" y aunque las cosas no son como antes, el dejo mucho de el en el pasado debido a toda la presión, harry quiere que su "yo del pasado" entienda que solo importa el

claramente el video trata sobre el, su sexualidad y la feminidad que viene con ella, (sabemos que harry nos ha hablado de esto en fine line) de la ralación de harry con su "yo del pasado" y como ha mejorado en esto etc, pero bueno empezamos con el primer tema

comenzamos con harry atreves de una pared de cristal simulando en el tipo de closet en el que se encuentra, prácticamente un closet de cristal es donde muchos se dan cuenta y lo pueden ver pero tu no puedes salir y eso sigue creando la idea de que eres "heterosexual" y esto se refleja en como hay muchas personas las cuales no prestan atención, luego entra en la habitación que yo pienso que seria el hogar donde se encuentra a su feminidad y a su "yo del pasado" (la chica representa a estos dos) el como se aferra a ella y serle fiel, llegando a encontrarse y perderse en múltiples ocasiones, el como lo tratan de separar de ella, hasta que en un punto esto se quiebra y se pierde, dejándolo perdido y roto pero el tiempo pasa y harry se levanta y desnuda su alma y se muestra como es crea su propio camino, la feminidad se reencuentra nuevamente con el y esta vez se unen en uno solo y aunque siga estando atando esa pequeña parte de su sexualidad ya esta definida y ya tiene un motivo para bailar

HARRY DEL PASADO Y HARRY DEL PRESENTE

también podemos pensar que trata sobre la relación de el con el harry del pasado como ha mejorado en el mismo después de tantos años y como el harry del presente pudo salir adelante y desnudar su alma, encontrarse así mismo y la verdadera felicidad mientras que en el pasado no se sentía tan bien con el mismo, tenia miedo de lo que los demás pensaran y por eso el abraza a la chica dando a entender que comprende porque su "yo del pasado" no puede desnudarse y mostrarse como es

OBSERVACION

que aprendimos con as it was?? que hay cosas que vamos a tener que superar solos, sanar por nuestra cuenta y cuando estemos realmente bien hablarlo y entender que fue una etapa y podemos salir adelante
