Born in Denerim’s Alienage during one of the coldest winters, son of Antoria Surana and a mage from Ferelden Circle of Magi. Sickly as a child, he had a happy enough childhood with a mother that cared about him deeply. Taken to the Circle at age of seven, his magical potential being discovered by accident by a Chantry healer.
First years in the Circle were the hardest for Vergil - taken away from his mother, thrust into completely new environment, awoken magical ability that he couldn’t control properly, pressure from new teachers that wanted him to make progress in writing, reading and magic lessons as quickly as possible, rules to be learnt, templars to be feared and other apprentices and mages to co-exist with. Quiet, shy and depressed he had no choice but to prevail or give in to the whispers of creatures haunting him in his dreams and perish.
After learning his letters good enough to read silently, Vergil discovered his passion for knowledge. Books and research helped him greatly with building his confidence in using magic, as well as the encouragement of his teachers. He embraced his affinity to cold magic and with few bumps on the road during his magical training he found out a talent in another field. Interested in the school of spirit, Vergil experimented with spells when no one was looking, as one accident with a fire spell gone wrong during classes taught him to hide his findings.
Getting older, Vergil’s personality and looks changed - as he became more self-confident and arrogant his charm over others has grown as well. Something he wasn’t beyond using for his personal gain, be it for a favour or just for pleasure. Not friendly enough to be liked by everyone but his good looks and wits helped him with staying afloat in the group of apprentices. Harrowed two years before the Blight he started a study in seemingly two opposite fields - primal and spirit.

Conscription to the Grey Wardens was a great surprise but also a chance for Vergil to leave the Circle and see the world much sooner than he’d planned. Open world, with its environment and people turned out to be harsh for the young mage, though given his heritage and upbringing it wasn't as much of a shock as it could be.
Pushed into the role of the leader after tragic events of Ostagar, at first Vergil stumbled a lot, masking his ignorance and doubt with cold indifference. The life on the road, dynamic with the group, responsibility for his decisions and a few serious clashes with his fellow Warden and many other bumps on their journey shaped him into a different person than he was before the Blight. More focused, diplomatic with knack for strategy, always weighing pros and cons of decisions.
With help of his friend, Morrigan, Vergil discovered his magical talent anew. Unlearning years of Circle teachings and exploring his potential for much more than he thought was possible. Vergil started experimenting with original spells as well as “classic” magic, taking notes of the combinations, effects and other results in journals. His journey with blood magic started as an accident but it didn’t make him shy from it, quite the contrary - his curiosity spurred him to use it more whenever possible and with time he started to be aware of the Fade creature that observed him for years.
After the Blight Vergil accepted the official title of Commander Of the Grey Wardens in Ferelden and slipped into the role as it’s made for him. The position gave him a lot of freedom and he found himself thriving while working on solving many problems of the order and arling under his care.

Vergil’s relationships with companions could be summarized as “I have a plan how to proceed, but if you have an idea I’ll listen. It doesn’t mean we’ll do it your way.” He’s civil with them, their common goal bringing them together. As a leader of their group, Vergil has no illusion that he can turn his nose on any help offered. To keep himself in his companions' good graces he often talked with them, and given the chance improved their gear or offered small gifts.
For a long time he used a “favor for a favor'' system, because he believed that if he could interest someone in something they want, they’d stay. Few friendships and one relationship later proved him wrong - it’s possible for people to stay around for his company.
❄️ ✨
Calm, patient, ambitious, pragmatic. Arrogant, stubborn, usually keeps people at a distance (with few exceptions), isn’t above using someone for his own goals. Determined in search for knowledge, ready for a sacrifice others could see as unethical.
❄️ ✨
Vergil values luxury and surrounds himself with beautiful objects - clothes or accessories, finely made weapons, wine, books. Looks are important for him as his status, and he works hard on both every day.
