I have faith in the capacity for goodness in people. I don’t have faith in the capacity for goodness in America—or any country, for that matter. The desire to define oneself not by our species but by which plot of land we live on has done irreparable damage to the world. People wonder why Trump’s bigotry doesn’t disqualify him from being President. Don’t delude yourselves: this is what the U.S.A. is, what it believes, what it has stood for throughout its history. We are living on stolen land, and we don’t deserve grace. I have no pride in where I live. I don’t think of myself as an American and never have. This country is rotten, and we can’t go back to the comforting lie that it’s somehow better than this. We have to fight the idea, the entire ideology of this country, if we’re ever going to create a better world. I don’t believe in borders. I believe we are all siblings. And that’s an idea worth fighting for.

Moreover, I believe that humanity will survive longer than expected. I believe we’ll keep going after capitalism eats itself. I believe that our ability to love, support, and save each other will come out and keep us alive well after our individualist conception of society is reduced to rubble. I believe that communism will win, because we can’t go on forever pretending like caring for each other is a choice and not crucial for our survival.
