Only three days? Woah, I… Didn’t nearly handle this as well as you are. But I know what you mean, sometimes I feel like I’ve been here forever.
You.. Hey! [She fake-punches him the arm very lightly.] But tell you what, it’s actually a relief because I’m seriously the worst at cooking. Hm.. I don’t know, I’d eat pretty much anything really. But I guess I could go for bacon, maybe? And anything else that’s around, really.
I give you the option to have anything that you want in the entire world and you chose bacon? Hm, I can respect that. Although you make a good point. [He opens the fridge and looks around, unearthing a package from inside.]
Lucky for you, it looks like I have some. [He pulled at the plastic packaging and began placing each strip in the melting butter.] So how long have you been here, then? What was your first week like?
What, no! I didn’t mean watch you sleep, you make me sound like some kind of creep. I meant like make sure we’re safe and stuff! But that’s a good point. How long have you been here anyway?
Ugh, yes please! [She gets up from the bed, waiting for him to lead the way.] Well, I can try to help but I’m not exactly good in a kitchen either. And hey, that wasn’t really my fault! Besides, I would have helped anyway.
It's only been three days, I'm keeping track. But it's so strange because it feels like it's been much longer--weeks even. I guess time really is different here.
Here's the thing though, I kind of lied to you before. [He stepped into the kitchen and grabbed a pan.] I'm actually a great cook. You name it, I'll make it. Breakfast food or not, your choice.
I’m not that clumsy. Okay… I am.
I'm honestly a little shocked you haven't broken something already. And speaking of, I don't think you've told me how long you have been in-- [Suddenly he felt a surge of air behind him.]
Come here! Get closer.
Hey, when I hug, I go all in.
Well I'm not going to complain. Just try not to break anything--your bones and mine.
Of course it was. [She moves a bit to the side to make more room for him.] You can lay down now, I’ll stay awake and like, keep watch.
Actually I did! It was a great idea for us to sle— keep each others company. I mean, minus the part where you had to sleep on the floor. Did you even manage to sleep a little?
Have you stay awake just to watch me sleep? I don't think so. Something tells me that I need to get used to operating on a little less anyway--seeing as where we are.
[He stood from the bed and stepped closer to the door.] Can I interest you in some breakfast? Or better yet you could help me make some since I am hopeless in a kitchen and -- you do kinda owe me for the whole floor thing.
I don't suppose there's a barbershop around here.
I’m sorry! [She says before making a face.] To be fair after what you told me I was sure it’d be way harder to wake you up. That’s so not okay, I mean it’s really sweet of you of course! But we could have shared the bed, seriously.
Okay because that was actually awful. [He let out a large exhale and sat down on the bed beside her.] Next time I'll just lay here.
Did you get any sleep?
Well you didn't have to tackle me. Someone's a little eager.
Shit, I’m sorry! Did I wake you up? —Scratch that, were you… Sleeping on the floor?
Yeah, you definitely might be the reason I just jumped like three feet into the air. But yeah--actually I did. I just, you fell asleep first and I know it's a small bed and I wanted you to feel comfortable.
But don't worry I was fine on the floor, really.
… Um, hey. Hi. Good morning. —Is it morning?
[He stood abruptly at the sound of her voice.] Shit. Hi, yes it is morning. You scared me.
Oh, what’s the worst that could happen, really?
Oh I don't know. Maybe being attacked by one of the spirits you have so clearly yet to encounter. Having it rip me limb from limb, forcing me to live out the rest of my time in pieces.
Something along those lines.
I hear tell that nobody in this place ages. So that may be what you’ll end up doing.
But wouldn’t you rather leave and find them dead? You don’t want to stay here forever, constantly dodging supernatural beings.
Wait--what? You're telling me that we can never age? Well, on second thought I suppose that makes sense. The whole stuck here for eternity thing would be a little difficult if we did.
Honestly, I think I would rather face an eternity here than to come back and find that I have absolutely nothing left. Seeing their graves--well I just think that would be a little too much for me.
I’ll tell one too. So it’s fair. There was a boy. His father was a fisher, and one day when he was about fourteen he was allowed to go out in his own little boat and try his hand at catching a few.
But it backfired. There was a girl in the water, and his fishhook got tangled in her hair. After he helped her remove it, they got to talking.
Hours passed — they got along famously — but soon it was time for him to go.
She begged him not to. She asked him to come with her, instead. And he said he would, but only for a little while. So she smiled and she grabbed him and she pulled him under the water with her, and before he knew it he was down there with her. And the sea was full of wonders, and she shared them with him, and before he knew it, he’d been there for hours.
He said he had to go. She said he should stay just a little while longer. She said she was lonely. And he took pity on her, and stayed for a whole week. All thoughts of his parents were gone from his head after the fifth day. He remembered them on the seventh, and told her that he would go to the surface. Just for a moment. Just to tell them where he was.
She begged him not to. She said that once he left he couldn’t return. But he insisted, and so she took him back. She wasn’t happy about it or anything — in fact, I think the way the story goes, she’s actually weeping, even though it’s underwater — but she did it for him.
She drops him off on the shore and says a tearful goodbye, and he goes to his village, but he can’t find anyone he knows. Everyone seems to think he’s insane. Horrified, he goes to the graveyard — it’s where he sits sometimes, to think — and ten minutes later realizes that his fathers grave is there. His father, who died. Who died fifty years previously.
And then he realizes why the girl was so adamant that he not go back. He realizes that the passage of time is different in different worlds. He realizes that if he hadn’t gone with her, he would be an old man already. And he realizes that he has nothing left.
And that's exactly what I'm truly afraid of. That the world is still spinning and everyone is just--moving on with their lives without us. They have no idea where we are, or if we're ever coming back. And yes, eventually they will come to accept that we must have died and try to move on. But one day even they will be gone and it will be like I never really existed at all.
I don't want to leave this place and find myself visiting my loved ones in a graveyard.
Fine, you get a pass this time. But, only this once.
Well then how about you get over here already so that I can.
What are the legends that stuck with you the most?
Honestly, I could completely nerd-out over all of the ones that I find interesting. I've been told it's a little cooky. But I could tell you one that seems to stick out to me now for some reason.
I primarily studied urban legends that originated in America, but I did have a professor that told us a story about this place in the amazon.
There is a small tribe that lives in the Boiúna, some place in the mountains of Brazil--very remote. Of course, what better way for a legend to begin than in a far off land? Anyway, The tribe has passed many stories on through time but one of the most prominent of them is The Hanging Man. It's a story about an ancestor that became corrupt with lust and greed. One day this man lured another from his tribe deep into the jungle and murdered him horrifically. Due to the atrocious attack on the balance of nature, the legend says that the Boiúna itself hung that man with vines from the tree above them. And he hangs there still today, unable to feel the sweet release of death and yet unable to live.
I feel like this situation is kind of the same. Suspended in the spirit world. Except we're not hanging unable to move or speak. So I guess things really could be worse.
I liked science quite a bit too, but with history you can really learn about people. And I love people. I love the mistakes they make and I love the emotions they have and I love how crazy all of them are. They’re fascinating.
But yeah. Science and psychology were great too.
Anyway, I definitely didn’t know a thing about this place existing, but I’d always seen it as a possibility. I’ve been reading up on the paranormal for a long time. I noticed a lot of people found it fascinating, so I decided I’d see what all the hype was about.
You sort of talk about human beings and their emotions as if they're a separate entity altogether. I think that is fascinating. The way you see everything from the outside. It's different--but I admire it.
Yeah, I sort of have too with researching legends. Maybe a different approach, but perhaps it's the reason we both ended up here.
