remember when you were innocently minding your business in 2008 and 3oh!3 dropped the iconic fucking line “tell your boyfriend if he says he got beef that i’m a vegetarian and i ain’t fucking scared of him” that was a transformative moment in everyone’s life
This plebiscite is making me into an angry person.
I’m not someone who has faced much hate in my life; one high school bully aside, I have never directly faced discrimination for my sexuality. So I can take this, other challenges in my life have made me a resilient person and I believe in myself regardless of what anybody else thinks, but there are people who can’t take this.
There are teenagers who have been bullied at school who are already on the verge of giving up.
There are people who believe it when their own families tell them that they’re disgusting and god hates them.
There are are so many people sitting silently while the rest of the dinner table discusses whether queers are humans, no idea that there is one among them who has to listen to their hate.
Equal marriage needs to happen, but I will not take it at this cost. I do not want to sit through months of nationally publicised demonisation, knowing how many queer Australians might give up because of it. Because that’s what gets to me. Scream and shout and call me a sinner all you want, I don’t care, but don’t you dare do it to them. It breaks me.
If this plebiscite goes ahead, there will be blood on the Liberal Party’s hands.
