I am writing a book that may never sell. It's a black comedy about a school shooter. But I still have to write it, to write out everything that happened to me and everything I wanted to do and everything I fucked up, and to make it funny so I can own it. I go learn to shoot so I can write it right. My instructor is military and an ex-cop and shared the agony of tenth grade with me. He says, 'back then, you seemed so intimidating. Like everyone harassed you but you didn't react, like it didn't even touch you.' 'It touched me,' I say. I put on my ear protection and eye protection and practice quick draws, now after six hours able to shoot a tight circle in the middle of the target. Shooting the sadness out is one way, and remembering everything else that must be fed at dusk is another. We took a three-wheeler/tuk-tuk to Galle but wanted the walk home. Nearing Unawatana, the sun set into piles of clouds and these boys, back from fishing (these men, who feed their mothers and sisters and perhaps wives) left their nets in a pile and broke out the football.
