idjiyeon:
“playing games is a talent too, isn’t it? what about all those boys who are professional and make a lot of money out of it?” jiyeon has only a vague idea of what being a gamer entails. “and who told you acting isn’t my psychological crutch, huh?” she asks, amused. “i get to pretend to be someone else, forget this mess for a second. it’s therapeutical. sort of.” then she smiles at yerin. “also, isn’t it fucking fun to be the untalented ones of aurora? no one ever expects anything from us, so when we do the bare minimum they act like we’re beyoncé.” her voice is not bitter, jiyeon is past this point by now.
yerin doesn't know what she is anymore. main rapper, lead vocalist. does it mean anything? she's never sure that it does, that it ever has. she's fairly positive instead that those titles were granted to her to mostly illustrate the fact that she is related to the ceo and thus must of course have a proper role in the group. in all honesty, yerin isn't as bad as she thinks she is. she certainly was at the beginning of things, unmistakably. figuring out how to rap had been one thing, somethign she wasn't so terrible at these days, presuming she stuck to her admittedly narrow skill range. midas wasn't known for good rappers, but as taeho was sure to show off soon, midas was actually quite good at developing their idol-rappers by narrowing in on what aspect of their talent was decent enough and helping them to operate within that range. it was a midas specialty maybe. like san - he'd never be a main vocalist, but they had taught him (and he had slaved to) utilize his voice to the best of his capabilities, with music to suit it. regardless, rapping in a studio while standing still was a bit different from attempting the back breaking choreography at the same time.
yerin was perfectly, well, decent at each of these skills when separated out. she could rap well when she stood still. she could dance well enough when she didn't need to hold a tune. she could sing okay in the studio. but put it all together and her head muddled up, her senses boggled, her tongue tied and her embarrassment ended up paramount.
jiyeon understood that. jiyeon understood what it meant to be forever fretful, certain that you were trying to live up to something impossible, positive that no amount of effort put forth was ever going to clear the black mark beside your name: she bought this. she's just lucky. she's just rich. she's just connected. yerin wants to succeed on her own merit, but by virtue of name and face alone it feels like she's a hamster running on a wheel, ultimately doomed to die of exhaustion. maybe its a morbid hamster. yerin flops in a huff down to the couch, flops her head to the side on the other's shoulder, pouting. "i don't know. people will just say i bought that too. it doesn't matter what i do." she complains, "even when i stream games half the comments are just asking me to take my top off. no one takes me seriously." in fairness, she doesn't ask to be taken seriously, constructs that blank paper nerdy gamer girl image as a defense. if no one expects anything of her she can surprise them in a positive way, maybe, once or twice at least. "maybe for you." she grumbles, "for me they just complain. i pour my stupid little heart into trying out one of those raps and then they complain - i like it more when aurora songs don't have raps~~ nevermind the fact that when we do the pure vocal songs they act like i'm personally responsible for the line distribution," it's a popular complaint, with solo stans and those who begrudge yerin her place in the lineup, a certainty that she's only getting screentime, parts, because of who she's related too. maybe its true, but yerin likes to think she might also be improving, at least a little bit.
"besides, you're a star now. a leading lady. a successful leading lady, too." she points out, "you can basically just bail out on this group whenever you want. what am i going to do? at least your psychological escape makes money. my reflexes are probably too slow to go pro now. you know the very early twenties are the sweet spot for gamers." she sighs, stares at her hands. she's only being slightly melodramatic, prone to exaggeration. "i'm basically ancient in professional gamer years." it's not true, but by the end of her contract she sure would be. "i should have left to focus on my studies too. at least minyoung seems okay."
