idjohyun:
he can’t even think of a good answer, the dumbass that he is. “fuck all the way off, jaekyu. get the fuck out of here, i mean it.”
it’s weird, how completely they missed each other. jaekyu tries to be personable. he likes it when people like him. he wants to be liked ( and maybe that explains just a bit about his career choice ). there are a rare few things that can override that, but people who mess with milo and yohan are one of them. jaekyu would side with them both on near anything, and johyun wasn’t the exception. especially when jaekyu had trained alongside the other two for years. was brought back to the group because of them.
so if johyun decided he didn’t like them, jaekyu wouldn’t make an effort to remedy. he could return it. he wasn’t a pushover. though neither really knew how the other felt. how similar though deeply pushed emotions within them were. the same doubt, the self-consciousness that lingers. worries like a rat in a cage. constantly gnawing. but they suppress those things in different ways. jaekyu acts the opposite. attention seeking confidence, and those are still pieces of himself. but that’s not who he is. he’s just doing the same thing that kjh did. picks out the pieces of himself that he likes, that he thinks others like, and showcases them.
but jaekyu wouldn’t share that, not with johyun. and johyun wouldn’t share back. and so here they are, at the same crossroads they’ve squared off at hundreds of times before. “why should i fuck off? i was here first. what the fuck, dude?” it’s laughed out and incredulous. but it does piss jaekyu off. it feels like entitlement, feels like getting pushed to the side, and it also feels like it doesn’t mix well with all the drinks he’s been pouring down his throat.
alcohol mixed with gasoline and now all they both need it that match to ignite. set them off in a grand boom. “so what, why are you here? why did you come all the way over here to get in my face and tell me to fuck off, huh? nobody here care about you either? leech.” it might not be true, but it’s something jaekyu’s decided to spin up sometimes with the aid of the others. johyun fixing himself to them all, taking and not contributing. leeching off what everyone else puts into the group. and now, when he smiles, it looks mean. “so how about you fuck off instead?”

idyerin:
“bullshit like always,” she repeats, nods a little, “that about sums it up.” cheeks puff out and she leans back into the chair, a groan as she lets her shoulders slope down. she pushes her chair slightly, rolls towards a mini fridge in the corner and retrieves a bottle of soju, two little glasses, sets them onto the side table to the side of them. she cracks the top off and pours the two shots, hands one over to the boy and takes the other for herself. “just dealing with crippling anxiety and the surety that i’ve blundered into this career in the biggest mishap of my life, you know.”
it’s, of course, nice to surround yourself of people with similar interests. hobbies. it’s why he’s friends with milo and yohan, isn’t it? because they all liked rap, making music. and then there’s people he surrounds himself with who have similar interests in partying, and then gaming. including the small idol centric group jaekyu had found himself on. past just that known ring of names, too. that was how he and yerin found themselves clicking. they both liked games, even if they both didn’t always like the exact same games. but still, that interest was found there. grew past that one similarity and into a more branching friendship. sometimes more. not that either of them had ever smacked a label onto it. them.
it seems a lot about jaekyu’s life is label-less. though not often by direct choice. it just seems like, whenever he might want to push past that on the cusp feeling of ‘almost’ with yerin and possibly breach the subject of becoming something more...well, juniper has a habit of appearing and sweeping jaekyu’s interest back up in her. it’s a wonder yerin still talks to him. but then, she’d never approached that conversation either. they’re similar in that regard, anyway. and maybe she doesn’t want anything more that occasionally pushing past the bounds of friendship and returning back again.
jaekyu can appreciate that about her, that willingness to return. because he does like her as a friend, even if he sometimes wonders if he likes her as more ( or if it’s just a side effect of juniper, snapping him back and into a rebound he wants to feel delusional about ). jaekyu sheds layers and leaves them behind him like a snake before he crams himself into a chair. settles into the heat of the room and suppresses a yawn. “please record that and then i can use it as a sound bite in my next song. it’ll be great.” he laughs the last part out. it would never get greenlit, but it would probably pull some kind of look across his friends face. hilarious.
“no problem,” he pairs this with a lift of his hand, waves two fingers in a lazy salute that matches his grin. he leans himself a little closer when juniper offers him a shot, tucks his chin in against the arm of the chair as he waits for her to pour her own, drinks them down in synchronization. “yeah, well. isn’t that all of us?” jaekyu answers with a shrug. he’s wearing one of those wry grins, like it’s all a hilarious joke. but maybe he doesn’t mean it to be one. “aren’t you guys getting more popular now though?” it feels like they are, but jaekyu’s never been one for tracking statistics, or even research as a general concept.
lo-fi children.
idmilo:
not that he would, he realizes, but he’d almost like the option, to not feel compelled to put everything on the stage each time, to run himself down to the bone. but it’s in his nature and there’s no fighting that. “you can kinda sing.” he points out - they all know enough to limp along, as part of the whole idol package. he’s been working on it a little, himself. just in case. he needs versatility. he doesn’t have much else going for him, or at least, that’s how it feels. the reality is up to the public to determine, but milo sees himself, sees ghoul, as a weak link, or at least as one that reads as negligible. people know atlas, they know yohan, they know jaekyu, but milo? they don’t know milo, and they barely know ghoul. without the group he’s not got much going for him. he wants to turn that around. “can you imagine yohan’s face if they tried to give us a ballad? maybe they’ll do a vocal unit next time and we can rest.”
jaekyu is impulsive. he’s flickering attention and jittery limbs. he’s words without thought, and aspirations without plans. in a metaphor, jaekyu would be a pile of pieces dumped into a box, shaken about with the expectation that a watch will somehow materialize if it’s rattled around hard enough. there’s a lot going out, but often to plan with how to deal with it all. but, despite it, jaekyu acts cocky enough while he’s busy shaking his useless box of a self around. self confidence is key. fake it till you make it. jaekyu lives by those words.
it’s hard to spot it. he has more than half the world fooled. in reality, he isn’t. he’s outgoing. he’s willing to speak his mind. he’ll try nearly anything once. but all of those things don’t make him self confident. but it’s not like he’s trigger happy about correcting anyone. if they want to think he’s got it all figured out, let them. who wants people to know you’re struggling, really?
but if there’s one person jaekyu’s willing to open up to, it’s always been milo. there’s an understanding there, about the inadequacy. the helpless feeling they trap themselves into. it’s quiet, and stifling. sometimes milo reminds him to breath. and sometimes jaekyu returns the favor, like a heavy fist thumped between the shoulder blades. “kinda,” jaekyu snorts it right back at him. he figures it’s a little true. he’s been trying to improve in stolen bits and pieces. when someone can get him to sit still long enough to properly learn about vocal technique and not have it derailed by a passing, arbitrary train of thought. more difficult than it sounds.
“ha! now i really want one.” the words are shoved in between loud laughter, one hand smacking good naturedly at milo’s shoulder as he wheezes it all out. “or disco, just because want so see someone try to shove yohan in a spandex jumpsuit.” he would suffer as well, of course. but in the end, wouldn’t it be worth it? yohan forever immortalized in thousands of pictures. “fuck, i wish. but it’s probably more likely they’ll start telling johyun he’s talented than let that happen.” that’s a joke. a mean spirited one. but it’s not like milo likes him either, even if he does sometimes like to wander around pretending he’s nice.
seeing milo flip out on someone in pent up fury is probably in the top five on jaekyu’s bucket list -- the one condition being that milo’s not flipping out on him. “man, it’d be nice if we got a vacation soon. one that isn’t filmed. jesus. does it even count, at that point?” he questions out as they both amble along toward the room with atlas’ name taped to the door. forced to wait until they drag them all back out onstage for three minutes to announce a winner. what a productive way to spend their time. not.
falling apart
idjohyun:
“watch it,” he mutters, moody. drunk. stupid.
hurt.
usually jaekyu’s not as intense as some of the other members of atlas, especially the rapline. he has a bad habit of treating life in general like a goddamn joke. but he still finds difficulties in things. gets angry. has a clash of opinions. rebels. and when push comes to shove, jaekyu is willing to fight. especially if he’s following after, defending his friends. and during the almost-split of atlas that had been exactly what jaekyu had been doing. and yes, he’d wanted that creative freedom just as much as the rest of them. wanted to push the limits before they were sealed shut entirely. wanted to step out of that prepackaged box and be able to push at limits. if not with atlas, then with his own potential solo activities in the future.
so he had fought the company. was willing to fight his own group. out of all of them, jaekyu is maybe the easiest to let things go. to forgive. but that’s only when someone wants it to happen. and johyun? well, it never seemed that way. he kept to himself, a wad of gum someone had spit out in the corner because they didn’t like the taste ( probably sour apple or some bullshit that didn’t even taste like apple ). like kjh had wanted the taste at first, wanted to mold him into something reasonable as they thought on atlas, on who they should be, and chew, chew, chew i just don’t know. blow his bubble. pop it.
by the time all that dust had settled, by the time the three of them had made it clear they were grinding down on the brakes unless they got their change, it was clear that johyun would sort of be directionless. they wanted creativity, they wanted inspiration, they wanted more. but what could johyun give? nobody cared. so spit him out. let him stick to the floor. nobody bothered to pick him up. nobody in atlas wanted that burden, to crouch down and choke back a gag through the whole process of prying it off the linoleum.
so they don’t like each other. that’s the story. if the drawn out analogy of johyun and already chewed gum doesn’t beat that over the head already.
a change of venue doesn’t change an opinion. jaekyu hates him at the party, too.
“i should watch it?” jaekyu asks him. he smiles as he says it, but it doesn’t look all that friendly. “damn, you’re right. sorry my man, i know it’s still hard to control all eight feet of you. we’re rooting for you though. you’ll get it soon, tiger.” a jab. they all knew johyun’s proportions made it harder for him to look graceful while dancing.

idyerin:
she’s editing the tail end of a review on the new pokemon games when there’s the ding of a bell being rung and she shuffles to the little door across the small room, presses a few buttons on the key pad and pulls it open, nods. “hey, jaek,” she hums out, glances over him, eyes moving in a quick sweep, “you look cold, c’mon in.” she pulls the door open wider, “no one saw you right,” her eyes narrow with suspicion, glancing over him. “the last thing i need is a scandal with a fuckin’ atlas member, they’ll find my corpse in the han the day the article breaks.” she flops into her chair and spins it to face the little excuse for a couch, head cocking to the side. “wanna get smashed, whats up these days?”
it’s getting cold outside. the leaves crumbling up into little balls of orange or brown. they’d rather die than face winter, jaekyu can’t blame them. much of his life was spent growing up outside of korea, in a place that didn’t get all too cold on top of it. there’s a certain distaste for the season that he now carries around with him. he hasn’t yet broken out the padded jacket, but he has a coat layered over a hoodie. face hidden behind a mask and a wall of humidity every time he breathes. there’s a beanie pulled down of his head, his hood yanked over that. but that’s more about the anonymity than the cold. one has to take certain precautions when sneaking into a privately rented room from a member of another sex, especially one that’s not even in your own company.
in short, kjh would probably kill him themselves if he got caught sneaking into yerin’s known space. at least then he wouldn’t have to brave the goddamn winter.
he clatters inside with the grace of bewildered golden retriever. backpack swinging off a shoulder, his shoes already half off as he trips his way out of them. the room, at this point, is familiar in it’s lisa frank inspiring, blinding chaos. jaekyu’s at the point where he nearly likes it. maybe his next tattoo will be a unicorn, inspired entirely by yerin’s magi-girl bullshit. or maybe not. juniper would have a conniption.
“i actually called up newsflash so we’re gonna get a good spread of me sneaking in. probably they’ll nab one of you on the balcony. he’d probably appreciate if we dip out to get coffee soon and then if you let me shove my tongue down your throat before we drive off i think i get a bonus, i don’t know.” it comes out in a running ramble as jaekyu drags off the additional layers and leaves them in a heap draped across an odd chair in the corner. he glances up after he yanks at the beanie, hair wild and static-ed, a debonair smile on his face. if debonair was synonymous with greasy, anyway.
he laughs and slings an arm around her shoulders when he gets close enough. “by in the han i hope you mean the river. though i do hear han in bed is boring enough to kill someone, so you’ll have to clear it up for me regardless.” it’s a dumb joke, but most of jaekyu’s jokes are dumb. so it’s not a big surprise.
he lets his arm slide away to topple back onto the couch, attempts to finger comb his hair down as yerin talks. “yeah, sure. and i don’t know. bullshit, like always. what about you?”

idjua:
she doesn’t want to be smiling, but she is.
“pretty sure all of them, on a technicality.” he lobs it back, almost on an impulse. and that’s how it’s always been for them, too. a game. both too juvenile. sometimes they’re on each other’s team. figuring out that end game solution. and sometimes they’re against each other, screaming and upending the board. sending tiny plastic figurines scattering across the tile. figuratively speaking. and once literally. monopoly's a bitch. sometimes the games are fun. sometimes it’s just monopoly 2.0, but they keep passing go until one of them gets frustrated enough to pretend to leave the game. but they always restart. endlessly. maybe they’d notice the pattern if either of them were observant enough for it. but they’re not. well, jaekyu definitely isn’t. maybe juniper will catch on one day.
he finds himself grinning triumphant when juniper trails off. she starts out strong, something that sounds bolded in her mouth. but the realization hits only after and then she drags it out. quiets into a whisper. like jaekyu might’ve just missed that very important, very quiet meaning that’s impossible to admit. that, or like if she wisps it only silently enough, he might have assumed he’d imagined the start of their sentence in the first place ( in her defense, the latter probably has happened on more than one occasion ). he nods, continuously, like a bobble head as she gets stuck on that word like a broken record. a little drunker, and jaekyu might’ve started to sing su.grr’s rendition of it.
“i know. should’ve gone as prince charming.” jaekyu sighs out, as humble as always. but of course there’s pride there. isn’t there always, when you topple some formidable problem? when the dust settles and they realize that they’re not even sure what ugy headed monster caused it? pride and relief, but jaekyu often doesn’t let that one show. part of him always wonders if juniper might exploit it. and he’s not really sure how he’d take to that. so he removes the option from the table altogether and stonewalls the emotion. gets drunk, talks at length to milo about it instead. gets drunker, offers his groupmate 5,000 won and a three subway coupons ( one expired ) to write him a love poem for juniper ( requirements, must contain the phrase ‘bad sexy bitch’ and fit well into the meter, if meter is defined by jaekyu’s half-assed understanding of it at least ).
“i actually don’t know which prince is prince charming.” jaekyu admits it readily enough almost immediately after. cards his fingers through her hair like he might be acting romantic right now. as far as positives go, however, at least he hadn’t yet offered a jello shot. he strokes his fingers soft against her neck, noses in at her temple. he’s pretty sure that this counts as dare completion.
“should we do jello shots?”

prompt, backstage at mbc music premier, era: fake love / @idmilo
they’re done up and undone. that’s what happens when you run through an intensive choreography underneath stage lights, dressed in sponsored stage outfits that often don’t take things like heat precautions in mind. it never helps when you don’t enjoy dancing. but milo doesn’t seem to relate to that one. just allows him one of those frustratingly quiet grins of his whenever jaekyu, or sometimes yohan, starts to bitch about the whole production of it. he’s managed to force his limbs into coordinated motion over the years, but jaekyu still hasn’t learned to enjoy it quite as naturally as the named dancers of the group.
there are moments. but he’s not a dancer. he doesn’t think he ever will be. it’s not in his bones the same way. they;’re musical, sure. bang together like a clunky xylophone, popped joints, a whole grand, numbered cacophony. but there’s no loping grace there. just a collection of scattered noise. it matches his musical efforts thus far, if jaekyu’s being honest with himself.
there’s a reason he doesn’t like being honest with himself.
milo would tell him that it just isn’t true. and that’s part of the reason why jaekyu likes milo so much. the kind of relationship forged through hardship, stretched taught with a collective aspiration to reroute their entire groups musical direction. he’s like a brother. more of a family than his actual family ( not that it’s all too hard, in either of their cases, really ).
“fuck,” it’s hefted from the depths of his lungs, rasping near the end. like he might have just finished chain smoking out back. but no, he’d just been moving through their entirely too hyped up choreography and interjecting lines in between all those frantic steps. he feels worn. but they both know he’ll snap back into the jittery, unendingly narrative person he is after he catches his breath back up in his chest. maybe chugs back a redbull or two. it’s practically an addiction at this point.
“you know, i almost hope we have a ballad next time. which is rich coming from me, considering i can’t fucking sing.” an exaggeration, but it’s no secret that jaekyu’s not going to be calling himself a main vocalist anytime soon.
gravedigger.
idjua:
fuck, she doesn’t remember either. but it had been meaningful. important. she had been mad about it, she remembers that at least, which was something. “something. something….” she struggles to think, when his breath his hot on her neck. when she can only see him, clouding into her field of vision, crowding up against her. she looks at him and thinks of the summer sun, of the lake, of peaches. she thinks of creaking desks and school lockers and the surprise of seeing him again now. the surprise she’d had when she’d first seen him again, across an ocean, across continents, standing on stage just as she was. his smile cuts through his face like a lightning bolt, plunges into her heart like a dagger, and june can’t help but smile in turn, groans as she settles her forehead to the line of the other’s shoulder. “you’re very compelling and i don’t appreciate it.” she informs the flat of his shoulder, prods a finger into his side.
“oh, aren’t you hilarious. or sassy, is that your whole thing now...” there’s a pause, a hand waved in the air, like he’s trying to usher drunkenly forgotten vocabulary back into his head. eventually he finds it now. “re-branding effort?” realistically though, jaekyu has never been the most observant of people. it’s not even entirely put up to things like narcissistic behavior. and sure, he can be self involved. who isn’t? but no, it’s just never really been a central focus for him.
he’s not a detail oriented person, he never has been one. he’s not a complete idiot. but he was the sort of kid who got straight d’s through school, who invented his parents’ disappointment on himself seemingly every time he saw them. for all he knows, singularity had promoted her the exact same way, kjh might not have changed anything. all he knows is that the whole company change still seems to be a touchy spot to some of the now jawbreaker girls.
and he’s drunk.
it probably does nothing to help. but isn’t this how things have always been between them? even back then. before they’d both been transplanted in korea to pick up careers. it’s nearly funny, that shift in perceived levels. or maybe he’s still technically beneath her. but that wealth disparity has been shrinking more and more. maybe atlas has caught up. who knows. probably milo. but jaekyu’s always careened about things in a wild stumble. maybe he’ll dash his entire groups efforts with his own clumsy, heavy-handed fists. then juniper can reign above him again. or jua. whatever the fuck she’s decided to respond to for the day.
he lifts his brows as he waits for her to tell him exactly what they argued about. but she falters too. which means it was about bullshit. it also means that juniper will pretend it wasn’t about bullshit out of stubborn will. sometimes it’s cute, sometimes it’s goddamn annoying. it feels a little bit like winner when she gives up on the mental word search and drops her head to his shoulder. he laughs, something fond. warmed by whiskey.
“you love it. me.” jaekyu decides with a grin, and he sounds cocky. but who wouldn’t in his position? riding a high of ever-growing fame and punch drunk. “does this count as a truce, then?” he asks, intertwines their fingers and squeezes. “let’s get back together, you know i’m still crazy for you.” he’s not even really sure if they technically had broken up ( again ). but it’s like balm to a burn. and hey, he’s seen that stupid list. two birds, one stone, free points.
gravedigger.
halloween event, publicly confess to someone / @idjua
at this point, jaekyu’s mask is gone. he’s got the strap looped around his belt and hidden behind the cloak of a thing he’d begged off a stylist. given to him only after he’d started flirting. worth it. he’s also spend a good chunk of time at the bar. near the bar. gravitating toward the bar. a lot of what he’d consumed had been mixed with redbull. now he’s crushed high in that sugar dust rush. had split his time between rave dancing shoved inside a small pit of idols or hanging around the rest of atlas’ rap line insisting that they all ‘loosen up a little’ without actually paying attention to whether or not they were.
so all he’s really done so far is get progressively drunker while losing bits and pieces of his costume. but what can you do, really.
that and start that stupid game. but then, most everything branded stupid is right up jaekyu’s alley, so he’d thrown himself into that chaos willingly. he’d never been one to shy around making a fool of himself or getting himself bodily injured when it came to dares. that was half the fun. it’s the kind of reaction you get when you mix together brash bullheadedness and a lack of shame.
it also explains why jaekyu’s sidling himself up alongside jua, interrupting whatever conversation she may or may not be in the middle of even though they hadn’t entirely gotten over their last pointless argument and smoothed things out yet. but they’d at least texted each other before the party, so he figures that gives him reason enough to pair one of the dares with convenient timing.
“babe, come on. you know i.” pause. sway. he steadies himself with a hand to jua’s hip. “want you still. lets just fuckin’ forget whatever the hell. we should get back together.” it probably counts as some kind of confession. to be fair, inhibitions cut free, and jaekyu might’ve slipped the word love in there. but he’s been around jua enough to know her, and if she wants to dance around that whole concept and withhold it, then he’s stubborn enough to copy her. “i mean. god, i already forgot what we argued about even.” he admits, pairs it with a smile that somehow manages to soften his entire face. a puppy dog of a boy. it’s nearly a weapon, they both know he gets into to much trouble for his own good.
ayyyyyyyyy my dudes, idolize 2 point 0 lets go. except im late and slow...surprising nobody. but i still love jaek and want to get things rolling for him again. like milo’s mun i think i’m going to wipe all of his old relationships aside from those in his group that stuck around and then move forward from there. all you need to know about jaekyu is that he’s a mess and a half, a scandal machine, and talks before he thinks on the regular. there’s more but i’m feeling...lazy. but you can check out his profile here for a few other facts! otherwise like this or im me and we can get something goin’

birth of a family filming schedule, mid-afternoon on apt. set / @idyohan
it’s awkward with yohan still. jaekyu tries to look past it, in the way that jaekyu tries to look past nearly everything. yohan hasn’t stopped to talk to him in their dorms or outside of them, not unless he has to. not unless it’s for work and there are people around. it’s an awkward, stilted thing. but jaekyu pretends it isn’t. follows along with the act. even if they’re both terrible at it, the two kids you cast as trees in a school play. and they’re both trying ardently to make everyone around them think nothing is wrong. that they’re both fine. that jaekyu’s not guilty and yohan’s not. well. jaekyu doesn’t know.
either way, they’re failing. he sort of knows because every so often milo sends him these pained looking expressions, the sort of looks he gets when he tries to pass off the fast and the furious quotes as something inspirational he might have found in a book. he’s trying to keep things normal though. they seem to be mitigating things by shoving them both off into different groups for filming. members shuffled around so that they present well for the cameras on the variety show. it helps that there are dogs involved, they really pull at your attention. and jaekyu’s had plenty of experience with variety at this point.
but eventually they have to take that next step forward, and they wind up in a room together with a camera pointed at their interactions. the dog is half in jaekyu’s lap, gnawing slobbery on a ball tucked into his fist. they should be talking, but jaekyu isn’t sure what to say. this used to be easier. “han, want to play rock paper scissors to see who has to chew won the ball after the dog’s finished?” he poses the question like it could lead into a game. he can tell immediately after the words come out that it’s fucking idiotic and if they were off camera yohan would probably beam him in the head with said ball.
not off to a great start. still time left to rebound.
“kidding. i wouldn’t subject you to that,” he laughs that out, reaches out to pinch and pull at yohan’s cheek like a gag, returns his hair to the dog’s fur after. “do you like having the pets?” jaekyu asks instead, because he’s always the chatty one, and he feels responsible to fill this weird void he started.
heeeeeeey, it’s me, the local snail. in an attempt to get my head in the game (dot mp3) i’ve actually managed to construct and entire plots page. i’ve been struggling a little bit lately, so i’m hoping this can kind of kickstart things? that said, i do really need more relationships and threads on jaek. just b/c i’m such a goddamn flake, i’ll be upfront and say that i’m definitely going to need something pre-planned between them and not a spur of the moment thread, so if none of those fit and you want to plot, i still need to talk my way through something that will have an impact on his life/lead to drama/or something along those lines b/c i’m predicting i’ll just flop otherwise. so like this or cut past pretenses and just throw me a msg on tumblr or discord at lyra#7957 ( i know i’m not super active there, but i’ll try and be on some today/tomorrow ) and we can hopefully get something going. just in case anyone needs it also, here’s his about and linked bio!

idmilo:
it’s not the time for this, but milo never brings things up when he should.
jaekyu has this proclivity of glossing over his problems. he’s not the kind of person who likes to dwell. he doesn’t put his foot down and demand retribution, doesn’t plan to seek out some form of revenge. he doesn’t really enjoy the idea of relying on pity, letting himself fall into it. in fact, jaekyu hates problems. he hates fights, or the kind of fights that happen between friends. something with someone he doesn’t know? care about? fuck it. whatever. but with people he knows? he’s rather just sidestep them entirely. it’s for this reason alone that jaekyu is seen as someone forgiven. he doesn’t hold grudges, not because everything is really okay, really forgotten, but because he hates the idea of bad blood. hates the idea of stirring the pot into overflowing, or having those feelings rounded back around on him.
and he wants to move on from this, too. it had been a shock at first. it really had. he’d gone and blown up at yohan. had gotten completely smashed with milo. holed himself up in their shared dorm and spent all of his free time zoning out in front of youtube, or trying to distract himself with matches on overwatch. milo had probably seen through it, at some point, that depressive slump jaekyu was ardently pushing himself through. those plastered on smiles are hard to maintain around someone who shares a room with you in a dorm for six men.
but that doesn’t mean that jaekyu has to stop pretending that it is all fine. that yohan’s entirely forgiven, suran too. that he’s accepted everything that’s happened and thinks it’s all okay, perfectly reasonable. for the sake of the group, and everyone seems to have been repeating that at him when he’d gone and shared his problems anyway. milo among them. jaekyu figures he should just be happy.
he goes through all the motions, bounds around on stage. slaps at yohan’s shoulder in the same way he always had. bumps into yohan and sejun like he’s a part in a pinball machine. smiles wide for the fans. keeps it tucked in place when they all shuffle offstage again. they fracture off in small pieces to dart around equipment and other groups. jaekyu ends up next to milo, a water bottle slipped into his hands. jaekyu opens it on autopilot and gulps down a sip. he nods at milo’s question, though stops the motion halfway through when milo clarifies.
his answer’s predictable, if anything. “yeah, of course man. i’m over it. it’s been, like, fuckin’ ages.” he laughs it out, like the sheer possibility that it could still be tripping him up is idiotic. but jaekyu’s pretty sure that to milo, the group dynamic’s more important than the nettled emotions barbed into jaekyu’s chest. and even if they weren’t, or even if milo wanted to find a way to solve them both in one grand swoop, jaekyu doesn’t want to deal with that extraction. he just wants to learn to live with it. keep going under the assumption that it’ll eventually solve itself. “what about you, you look like a zombie. stressed?” jaekyu asks, turns it back around on him as he folds an arm around milo’s shoulders to walk further backstage with him.
spent.
idsuran:
“i didn’t mean that. like that. like, i didn’t mean it in that way. i just - i don’t - i fucked up. but i don’t want to fuck up your…your life too. the stuff that matters to you. atlas.” she’s fumbling over the words and they taste like bile. “he doesn’t matter. you matter. it doesn’t - i didn’t - i didn’t act like you mattered. i fucked up. i really fucked up. i just. i don’t - i don’t want to fuck everything up.” even she isn’t sure what she’s saying anymore, and she’s sure he’s done with her, with the situation, with her bullshit. how do you come back from something like this, after all?
jaekyu’s poured back a few too many shots to have a conversation on a logical level at the moment. but then, even sober it would’ve been hard, probably. there has always been a lot going on, it seems. out of sight, circling around them like a swarm of sharks. hidden underneath the placid water. because jaekyu, large in part, is often removed from things in suran’s world. sometimes it feels to him like he’s there. like they’re close, so close. like he understand her. like she understands him back, better than nearly anyone. but then something happens and he’s reminded that he isn’t, not really.
he knows about her ambitions as a musician, but he also knows there are instances where she spirits herself away and he’s left to wait. on and off and on and off and eventually that light bulb has to fizzle out, pop under the constant flickering, right? perhaps he’s removed from things. and perhaps, also, suran doesn’t consider jaekyu in the same way that jaekyu considers her. doesn’t hold him to that same level of feelings.
this could be one of those forceful realizations for him, couldn’t it? he’s always been that kid. the last one to catch on. to get it. so suran could’ve been trying. maybe he wasn’t catching onto it. wasn’t picking up on the hints. maybe yohan was being treated like a rock to the face so he’d understand, move on, stop integrating himself into her life. it seems like a solid enough theory, one that weighs him down. but it’s not unfamiliar. jaekyu bounces on his heels, lets his eyes jerk around the room. looks anywhere but suran’s eyes.
“it’s okay. i’ll be okay. i just wasn’t...expecting....” jaekyu trails off, half formed thoughts, his attention’s jumping. from suran’s feet to the dj’s booth. the corner of the bar, the crowd of people. suran’s hands. but he’ll be okay. he makes himself okay. like if you smile for long enough, the expression will really seep in, permeate happiness in some weird non-scientific transfusion. but jaekyu’s never willingly taken on the role of a burden. hes been outrunning that title for his entire life. does anything in his power to distance himself from it. “it’s okay suran,” maybe it’s not, but jaekyu doesn’t know what to say, and he doesn’t want to muddy the water even more. “i get it,” and he does, to an extent. “i just. maybe need a minute. to myself, yeah?” he’s all but bouncing, too much energy and he feels like he needs to spend it before he deflates entirely. a popped balloon.
