Wow, what a neat unusual machine.
Galaxian high score. 12,290 points. Finally for this thing working and mostly out back together. More later.
Moppet Leprechaun button cleanup
I picked up a mostly complete disassembled Leprechaun cabinet a few weeks ago, and Iāve started working on a few things to get it reassembled.
The previous owner pulled it out of an op warehouse, where it had been modified to play NES games with a timer setup. His kids decided it needed to be decorated, and covered the control panel, buttons, and parts of the side art with marker. Iām not bothering with the CP, since itās not the original one, but I thought Iād see what I could do with the buttons.
First, I rubbed them down with isopropyl alcohol, which took off a fair amount of the ink. Next, I used a buffing wheel chucked into an electric drill and Novus 3.
They ended up looking okay, but not great. I think they can come back all the way, but Iāll need to disassemble them and wet sand to take the discolored yellow layer off.
I noticed these PC CRTs sitting on the curb on my way home, so I turned around and loaded them up. Two Dells, one M992 19ā³, one D1028L 17ā³, both flat CRT.
They both work fine with 31khz input, but neither support 15khz at all. The newer M992 gives you a nice message saying so, while the older D1028L just displays a black screen. A pity, as I think one of these might fit in my Mini Cute, which is running a crappy Wei-Ya universal chassis. I might look into a scanline doubler if one fits and I get desperate to replace the Wei-Ya.
Rule #1, Tank II (1975)
Been too busy/sick to post much, but I grabbed this game a few weeks back, Tank II. This predates Cabaret cabinets, but clearly is a precursor to what Atari would call Cabarets a few years later.
This game didnāt have a power switch from the factory. Someone āhelpfullyā wired one up, drilling a hole in the 25Ā¢ plex in the coin door in the process. The wire was old and the insulation crumbling ā and it was patched in before the line fuse! I removed it all before powering up, as it could present a serious danger of fire or damage to the game.
The monitor really needs recapping, and I think thereās a game board issue ā it immediately starts a game when turned on, which shouldnāt be happening ā but itās in overall awesome shape for a game this old.
Secret Service high score ā 2,924,910. All-time best is around 5m.
Spent a little pre-game time swapping out some insert lamps with LEDs. I know some folks arenāt that into LEDs, but I think they look great on everything except EMs. I plan to do the rest of them, but itās a start for now.
