It was extremely late at night when Vex found them. Percy had his coat draped over Vesper’s shoulders, rubbing her back and sometimes reaching up to wipe away a stray tear.
“Bad dream?” Percy looked up at her sadly, giving a gentle nod.
“Seemed like it.” Vesper was fast asleep by then, and thankfully so were the two brand new babies across the hall Vex had just finished tending to. Vex knelt next to them, pressing a kiss to Vesper’s head before cupping her husband’s cheek.
“Think she’s good to sleep?”
“I think so, but I’m not going anywhere.” Vex simply drew a breath.
“You can go back to bed, I just…” Percy’s tone grew haunted as Vex took his hand. Silently, soothingly, she rubbed his knuckles in encouragement. “…. I remember so many mornings after nightmares where I didn’t have anything to remind me that I’d woken up.”
“I know it’s sort of foolish. And I know it’s not a comparison,” he looked at Vesper almost reverently, “But I can’t ever let my children feel that way.”
Without another word, Vex took a seat next to him, wrapping an arm around her daughter and husband.
“Okay,” she kissed his cheek and made herself comfortable, “Then I’ll just stay here.” Percy smiled sadly.
“Don’t be, Percy,” she kissed him again, and gently kissed Vesper’s hair, “You know there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
So when morning came, and memories of Vesper’s odd yet terrifying dream started to resurface, she was quickly reminded of her safety by the steady presences of her parents.
And in that moment, Percy provided a comfort he would once break the world to receive.
